~ Mesmeroth before facing Hero. |
Mesmeroth, formerly known as Theo the Warlock, is the main antagonist of Cornfox and Bros’ Oceanhorn franchise.
He is an Arcadian warlock who defeats the demon Shadowmaga and acquires his mask, which makes him witness the Streams of Creation with his own eyes and creates a Dark Army to prevent the activation of Grand Regent Archimedes's Grand Core; a machine that would raise the White City to outer space, but destroy the planet in the process. He resorts to use a dark energy spell TRILOTH granted to him by the Shadow to terraform the world to do so, thereby causing the Catastrophe, which would leave Arcadia scarred for a thousand years.
He was voiced by Ray Chase, who also voiced Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rebuild of Evangelion, and the Master of Masters from the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
His Evil Ranking[]
Debatable Validation[]
- Mesmeroth has questionable moral agency in the events of Oceanhorn 2. It can be assumed that the Shadow manipulates and possesses him and leads him to commit evil actions, but it is worth noting that Mesmeroth destroyed the Shadow inside the Grand Core, making him responsible for his own actions. It can be concluded that the Shadow drove him to villainy, though.
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- As a child, when he discovered his magic abilities, he used his powers to spread blackmail, hurt, and distrust throughout the village.
- His experimentation with robots made the violent and destructive automaton known as Creation No. 1, which burned down houses in the village. Though to be fair, it was just an accident and he stopped the robot.
- Master Mayfair states his antisocial and withdrawn personality made him not get along with anybody; however, this might have been because of the ostracization he faced from other people in his village.
- After discovering Archimedes's plans to take his kingdom to the stars, he launches an attack on the Realm using his Dark Army, endangering many lives in Arne Village, Submeria, and possibly elsewhere, even though he claims it is only targeted towards Archimedes.
- When Hero, Master Mayfair, and Gen (also known as Sir Corbin) face him in the command room of the Dark Chariot, Mesmeroth heartlessly and hypocritically releases Sir Corbin's soul from Gen to make Gen his servant, subverting his good deed of saving Corbin's life. He even notes that he never should have done that in the first place, showing that the Mesmeroth Corbin and Mayfair knew was gone.
- He kidnaps and incapacitates Hero and Trin to prevent them from interfering in his plans of stopping him from bringing TRILOTH to the White City.
- He brings and unleashes TRILOTH on the White City when Archimedes refuses to stand down, destroying the White City and changing the face of Gaia for a thousand years. Even though the terrible effects of the events are not clearly shown, it is not considered fridge horror because it changes the events of the series, which include the eventual extinction of the Owru race and the Living Fortresses turning against their pilots and being driven insane.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is a bit tragic, because as a child he says he was a sickly boy and only wanted to be accepted for who he was. Archimedes understands him and brings him to the White City, but his jealousy makes him turn against him as well.
- He is clearly a well-intentioned Extremist and arguable anti-villain in Knights of the Lost Realm, as he uses the Dark Army only to stop Archimedes more destructive plans of destroying the world. He also seemed to genuinely want to make Hero and Trin the rightful King and queen after the storm was over, arguably showing affability. On top of that, he offers a last minute chance for Archimedes to step down only for him to refuse, showing himself to be quite honorable, given how he reasoned with the Grand Regent first instead of attacking straight away. In the end, he ultimately saves Gaia from the destructive force of the Grand Core. There is also some evidence that TRILOTH was less destructive than the giant machine.
- He thinks highly of certain people and cares for them. He had a son-like relationship with Calliope, going to her funeral even when there were tensions between him and Archimedes. He also gave Hero to Master Mayfair because he regarded him as the most honest man he had ever known. He also seems genuinely sad when he released Sir Corbin from Gen, outright saying "forgive me".
- After the Catastrophe, he has strong moral agency issues. When he morphs into an Anima Orb using his magic, the Shadow puts a hold on his soul, making them merged into Shadow Mesmeroth. From this point it is unclear if he is acting out of his own will or the Shadow’s.
Trivia[]
