Megatron, originally known as D-16, is the deuteragonist of the 2024 animated science fiction action film Transformers One, which is based on Hasbro‘s Transformers toyline.
Originally was a cogless miner and a huge fan of Megatronus Prime who constantly had to keep his best friend Orion Pax out of trouble, until the day they discovered a lost message from Alpha Trion and set out on a quest for the Matrix, unknowingly sealing their futures, and the fate of all of Cybertron.
He was voiced by Brian Tyree Henry.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- While Sentinel Prime does worse than him, Megatron stands out for his more unique and increasingly violent crimes such as his attempted populicide of Iacon city, especially due to his lower resources compared to Sentinel, who had Airachnid, an entire army of Death Trackers and control over Iacon, while Megatron only acquired and founded the Decepticons until the very end of the film, not to mention some of the people he would have killed included his fellow miners and friends.
- Despite having been close friends with Orion to the point where they considered each other brothers, he slowly begins to reject Orion’s ideology and actions, culminating in allowing him to fall to his death in order to fulfill his own vengeance.
- Although he does have some funny moments, such as his reaction to realizing Orion was planning for the two to participate in the Iacon 5000 right before the race begins, talking to Orion almost immediately after saying he wasn't going to talk to him, calling B-127 a 'really cool guy' to not offend him when he noticed the latter's worried face on what he was originally going to say about him, one of his feet turning to a tank tread when he tries to transform for the first time and forced to run with one of his legs longer than the other, he ultimately subverts it all once he fully becomes Megatron, becoming Cerebus's herald and being taken just as seriously as Sentinel by the rest of the characters.
In Movie[]
- Though he started off as a kindhearted Miner who only wanted to help his people and the city of Iacon, as the film progresses, he slowly becomes more and more ruthless, abandoning his ideals for the sake of tearing down Sentinel and all those who oppose him on his path to true freedom for Cybertron.
- After finding out the truth about the Primes’ demise and Sentinel’s true nature, he becomes consumed in hatred for the false Prime and loudly states his intentions to make him suffer and die a slow and painful death, snapping at Orion for little to no reason and belittling him a selfish person that never thinks about others, even though D-16 is the real selfish one here for blaming his own closest friend.
- After receiving his T-Cog, he becomes eager to fight and later after learning to transform, uses the gun in his tank mode to take out a Death Tracker. While he did do it to protect his friends, he clearly enjoyed it as he laughed and whooped over his newfound power.
- He took the evidence that the group would use to expose Sentinel from Orion and forcefully took the lead, leaving an unnerved Orion to worry over his friend’s changing nature. Later when Orion tries to talk to him, he snaps and states he will never trust any so-called leader again.
- When the group gets captured by the High Guard, D-16 dismisses Starscream and chooses to simply walk away, insulting the High Guard for their plight against Sentinel being to hide as cowards and challenging Starscream head on by head butting him and engaging in combat with him despite Orion’s protests.
- He ruthlessly beats down Starscream to the point where he begins crushing his voice box and leaves his voice permanently raspy, before subconsciously releasing his Fusion Cannon with the intent to kill the Seeker. While Starscream did goad him into hitting him, it was D-16 who started the fight and kept going despite his friend’s objections.
- While he did choose to spare Starscream’s life, he only did so to win the High Guard over through a show of strength, as even he himself states that this is the last time he’ll be merciful as he calls Starscream a pathetic leader who hid instead of taking the fight to Sentinel, a speech that he uses to rally the High Guard behind him in order to support him in his goal to killing Sentinel.
- Upon getting captured by Airachnid and the Death Trackers and being brought before Sentinel who tortures him by forging Megatronus’ face in his chest, he becomes even more wrathful as when Orion and Elita lead a siege and free the prisoners, he engages Sentinel in combat and dismisses Orion.
- While his defeat of Sentinel was for the greater good as he did so to free Iacon from his corrupt reign and punish him for his atrocities, he begins going overboard as he prepares to shoot Sentinel to death in public before being stopped by Orion.
- After Orion asks him to be better than Sentinel and not kill him, D-16 aggressively tells him to move before knocking him over himself and preparing to shoot down Sentinel, only for Orion to get in between and get mortally wounded.
- In spite of clearly showing remorse at first for shooting Orion, nearly tearing up and grabbing hold of him to prevent him from falling down to the sub-levels, he quickly subverts this by deciding to abandon Orion’s ideas of peace and tells him he will no longer save him, allowing his best friend to fall to his death for the sake of his own vengeance.
- While Sentinel’s fate was fully deserved due to him being a horrid person devoid of redeeming qualities, Megatron still brutally executed him in front of all of Iacon by ripping him in half and then hanging his head, before ripping out Megatronus’ T-Cog from Sentinel’s deceased body, with this being treated as the act that finally cause D-16 to lose his moral compass and fall to darkness completely.
- He casually discards Onyx’s T-Cog gifted to him by Alpha Trion as he throws it away in favor of taking Megatronus’ cog for himself to boost his own power and upgrade his body.
- After finalizing his transformation into Megatron, he orders the High Guard to burn down all of Iacon and kill everyone who once followed Sentinel, including innocent civilians who had no idea about who Sentinel truly was and what he was truly doing. This caused Elita and B-127 to turn against him as they try to prevent him from killing innocents.
- When his friends try to stop his destruction of the city as he violently blasts down buildings, he brutally beats them down without hesitation for getting in his way.
- After Orion returns now reformatted into Optimus Prime, Megatron throws away any chance of a peaceful solution by declaring he’ll take out everyone in his way as he attacks Optimus, initiating a fight between the two that would cause serious destruction throughout Iacon.
- What makes this worse is that he had no genuine reason to make an attempt on Optimus as all he did was cause an explosion that prevented him from killing Bumblebee which wasn’t intentional.
- After overpowering Optimus, he tries to kill him by using a piece of rubble before the Prime reveals his battle axe.
- Upon getting defeated and banished from Iacon, he angrily states that their conflict hasn’t ended, taking the High Guard with him back into the surface and rebranding his cause as Decepticons, swearing to take down Optimus and his Autobots.
- While he calls out Sentinel for being a traitor, this makes Megatron a hypocrite since he is a traitor to Cybertron himself with Optimus Prime calling out Megatron for betraying Cybertron, it's citizens. and him.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has a genuine tragedy due to being forcefully stripped of his cog at birth and forced to mine for cycles to benefit those of higher status, who constantly looked down on him and his kind, with bots like Darkwing often physically abusing them for being unable to transform.
- To further add to his tragedy, he was a truly kind individual who was often friendly with those around him regardless of status, growing up idolizing Sentinel as a capable and noble leader who always did what’s right for the people, often simply telling Orion to trust in Sentinel and his judgement, only to find out that Sentinel was a fraud who murdered the thirteen Primes and enslaved Cybertron to provide sufficient Energon for the Quintessons, which is what began his fall to darkness as he was consumed by hatred and corrupted by Sentinel.
- Furthermore it is implied the reason he was consume by his anger is because he put his faith in the people he though he could trust only to find out Darkwing and Sentinel did terrible things to others so he decided to take control of things himself.
- He is shown to be genuinely affable towards some people, even after he became Megatron:
- He has genuine care towards Megatronus Prime (and likely respects the other members of the Thirteen), viewing him as his personal idol and being horrified and disgusted as he witnesses Sentinel beheading him, angrily retorting he was greater than Sentinel in every way upon seeing that he stole Megatronus’ cog, later taking said cog for himself, possibly named himself "Megatron" like his hero's name "Megatronus",and even modeling the Decepticon Insignia after the face of his idol.
- He is an honorable individual, as he was shown to respect another Prime, Alpha Trion’s wish for them to head back to Iacon instead of taking on the Death Trackers despite very clearly wanting to fight, standing up to Sentinel when he, Bee and the High Guard were held prisoner in his tower even refusing the stay down and facing death.
- Despite him completely subverting any care he had for Orion, he was still shocked and heartbroken to hear that he and the High Guard are banished from Iacon city, but he nonetheless agreed, meaning he apparently still respects Orion. Also, in the post credits, Megatron says that Optimus Prime is their stronger and personal enemy, meaning he sees his former friend as a worthy opponent.
- His banishment from Iacon although warranted for his actions is played for sympathy. As when he is banished his eyes stopped glowing with rage for a brief moment, he can be seen with noticeable tears on his face and even a look of shock and sadness. This indicates that he felt some semblance of remorse and shame for his actions albeit briefly. Additionally Optimus takes no pleasure in exiling him only lamenting and showing sadness for how far his brother in arms had fallen.
Trivia[]
- In a deleted storyboard scene, the Decepticons can be seen celebrating as Energon flow is restored to Cybertron while Megatron remains scowling. If this was included in the movie, this would make Megatron even more heinous as it shows he has completely lost sight of his goal of liberating Iacon’s miners, instead being completely focused on reshaping society around his designs.
- Of course, another reason he would be unhappy is because he was remorseful for nearly killing his former friend who enabled Energon to flow again, which would actually make him less heinous.
- He alongside his Aligned, 2005 IDW Comics, and Cyberverse counterparts are the only versions of Megatron to be Inconsistently Heinous.
