~ Mary sadistically plucks every petal of Garry's rose

Mary is the main antagonist of Ib and its 2022 remake.

She initially served as the game's tritagonist, who acted as the second companion to Ib and just like Garry she wanted to escape the Fabricated World. However, as the game's story progresses, it is revealed that she is one of Guertena's creations, thus revealing that she is a painting and not a real human. This eventually leads her to her main goal: to be a real human and escape the art gallery, who eventually comes into conflict with both Ib and Garry due to her satiating desire of escaping the gallery with the former.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • After her true nature as a painting was revealed, she opted to stalk and kill both Ib and Garry, especially the latter, so that she wanted to achieve her goal of being a real human and escape the gallery with her.
    • She repeatedly stabbed a mannequin head out of anger at her identity being revealed.
  • Pushed both Ib and Garry down the Toy Box, leading to the two in almost near-death state.
  • Similarly, in the Forgotten Portrait ending, Mary kills Garry through a slow, painful death by plucking his rose petals out, as he and Ib were escaping the Toy Box. He ultimately dies (or rather goes into an eternal sleep) and sacrifices himself to allow Ib to kill Mary.
  • Imprisons both Ib and Garry inside the Doll Room in the Welcome to the World of Guertena ending, where she would proceed to give Garry's rose to the Lady in Blue painting before throwing his lighter into the Red Eyes painting. Not only both protagonists are mentally broken and limping at the same time, but their defeats are treated as a Fate Worse Than Death entirely, thus making her stand out for her unique crime.
  • In the Together Forever ending, Mary manage to follow Ib in the real world and modify the reality to becoming the sister of Ib after killing Garry, she either eat the candy he give to Ib or take Garry's lighter from Ib to avoid her remember the Guertena world, perfectly hiding her crime.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She is a villain by proxy and also just too tragic to be NPE, since her ultimate goal is to be a human (especially after the reveal that she is Guertena's creation), something that is brought up after she appeared.
  • She's rather insecure, given the aforementioned reason above that she's not a human and just wanted to have friends with both Garry and Ib, which pretty much is the reason why she was maddened by the revelation about her true nature.
  • Due to being a painting, she has morally agency issue due to having difficulty to comprehend concepts like death.
  • Her death is played for sympathy twice:
    • In the Memory's Crannies and Promise of Reunion endings, after burning her portrait, Garry and Ib can find a book on how to make friends, showing Mary's efforts to achieve her dream.
    • In the A Painting's Demise ending, when she believes she has becomes a real person, she instead realizes she is trapped in an empty gallery and desperately cries out for help before being consumed by darkness.
  • She cares for some people:
    • Despite her love toward Ib being twisted and used her as a mean to become real, she genuinely cares about her as proven in the Together Forever ending where she become her sister and was happy to visit the gallery with her also, the reasons why the Welcome to the World of Guertena happens is because she consider Ib a dear friend and did not want to leave her side.
    • She considers Guertena and his works her family, calling him father and crying out to him for help. She also refers to the Lady in Red as "Big sis" and displays friendliness toward all the works in the Fabricated World.
    • Despite her jealousness and eventual animosity towards Garry, it is implied that she is is not entirely antagonistic to him, as evident in her ending, A Painting's Demise, that she called both Ib and Garry for help. She also extend her friendship to him in the Welcome to the World of Guertena ending.

Trivia[]

  • She is the only Ib character to be Inconsistently Heinous.
