Martin Brisby is a supporting character in Don Bluth's 1st animated feature The Secret of NIMH, before becoming the main antagonist in its 1998 critically-panned direct-to-video sequel The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue.
He is the second-oldest of the Brisby children who becomes a twisted psychopathic villain after being experimented on by Dr. Valentine.
In his villainous ego in the second film, he was voiced by Eric Idle,
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- While it's unfavorable to compare Martin to Jenner, yet Martin effectively has more resources than Jenner. Since Jenner's actions were mostly killing Nicodemus to take over leadership of the rats of NIMH while dooming Mrs. Brisby's kids to die, and his resources were pretty limited to plotting sabotage from the inside.
- Martin meets the standards due to using high resources in terms of villainy. Unlike Jenner, he had resources to enact a war and wasn't just all talk.
- He did also want to wage war on humans.
- These actions are indeed horrible, but Martin does make use of the resources he has given how he brainwashed all the scientists of NIMH into acting like dogs (including the man who turned him evil), brainwashed two stray cats to serve as his lackies, plotted an all out attack on Thorn Vally, and essentially intended to essentially take control of even more.
- He even attempted to brainwash Jenny into being his queen.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Since he was brainwashed by Dr. Valentine and didn't actually choose to become a villain, which means he has moral agency issues.
- Sure Martin would later brainwash Dr. Valentine, but that was because of the brainwashing that had already been inflicted on him as Dr. Valentine intended to brainwash him into being a loyal assistant and not some evil mouse scientist mastermind.
- He is not taken seriously and is way too comical to be NPE (mainly because of how over the top he is), and the hamminess makes it hard to take him seriously.
- Even after turning evil, he still shows signs that he still cares for his family, especially showing care for Timmy as rather than try to kill him or forcibly brainwash him right away, he actually tries to convince Timmy to join him and even returns Timmy's slingshot to him after being defeated to help them both escape the exploding laboratory.
- He also forbids his cat minions from eating Timmy (or any of the mice and rats for that matter, but Timmy especially).
- He expresses heavy remorse for his actions and gratitude toward Timmy saving him, which can count as redeeming himself.
- He only became a villain because of a self-fulfilling prophecy (meaning that Martin would have never ended up becoming brainwashed into becoming so heinous in the first place of the residents of Thorn Vally hadn't taken Timmy to be a prophesized hero), thus making him a villain by proxy.
Trivia[]
- Don Bluth's idea for a sequel to the Secret of NIMH would have involved Martin as the hero and Timmy as the villain.
- In other words, basically what we got in the final product, but with the roles reversed.
- Regardless, had Bluth's idea for the sequel come into fruition, this page likely would have been about Timmy instead of Martin.
