Magellan is a prison guard in Impel Down. He was the warden of Impel Down who was in charge of running the prison and keeping order within in it. Since the massive prison break by Monkey D. Luffy and his allies and Marshall D. Teach and his allies, Magellan stepped down from his position as warden of Impel Down to the position of vice warden of the prison. He is the main antagonist of the Impel Down arc in the One Piece anime and manga series.

He is voiced by Mitsuaki Hoshino in Japanese and by Jeremy Inman in English.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • As warden of the prison, Magellan ran the prison and how the prisoners were treated. During his time as warden, he was content with how things were run where prisoners were routinely murdered and tortured on a regular basis. When Magellan was the warden of the prison, each level of the prison employed different means to torture and murder prisoners:
    1. Level One - Crimson Hell: Prisoners were to stay in a forest that had razor sharp needles. Multiple prisoners were in intense pain or died from their injuries.
    2. Level Two - Beast Hell: Prisoners choose to stay in their cells for their own safety because giant predatory animals could beat and consume them.
    3. Level Three - Starvation Hell: Prisoners were purposely deprived of any food or water, many prisoners were kept in a condition where they were still alive but in anguish. The level was also very hot from the extreme heat in the level below.
    4. Level Four - Blazing Hell: Prisoners were forced into labor in the prison under extreme high temperatures from the fires. Other prisoners were tossed into a giant pot of boiling blood called the blood pond to be tortured or murdered.
    5. Level Five - Freezing Hell: Prisoners were exposed to freezing temperatures which resulted in many of them dying and were at the mercy of a unit of canines called the Wolf Unit that can eat them at any time.
    6. Level Six - Eternal Hell: Prisoners were too strong to be tortured but was left in prison either for a life sentence or until their execution. However, prisoners were left in their cells until some of them can go mad from boredom. Some prisoners can also be beaten by the guards at any time such as Jinbe being beaten and bludgeoned by Minotaurus.
  • While fighting against Luffy in Level Four, Magellan poisons the prison guards who were in his way at the wrong place and time. When he realized what he has done, he calls them fools for getting in his way.
  • Magellan defeats Luffy by covering him poison which he notes would kill him within a day. He then has his guards send Luffy to Level Five - Freezing Hell of Impel Down to freeze and eventually succumb to the poison.
  • Magellan poisoned and killed dozens of prisoners during the prison riot when he was going after Luffy, Jinbe, Crocodile, and the other escaped inmates.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has humorous moments such as his bad hygiene and toilet humor that detracts from his serious portrayal. He is often seen with his bad breath which is treated as comedy. One moment also include when he gets heart-eyes from Boa Hancock when she requests to talk to Portgas D. Ace which detract from his seriousness.
  • He gets along with his colleagues in prison and jokes with them. When Hannyabal was beaten to near death by Blackbeard, Magellan tells him to not die on him as he entrusts Hannyabal to be the next warden of Impel Down. Other moments also have him saving Sadi during the prison riot.
  • Magellan was disgusted and outraged at Shiryu when the latter murdered dozens of prisoners for fun and abused his powers. Magellan had him sentenced to death by having him sent to Level Six - Eternal Hell. This shows his standards and that he does not tolerate his colleagues flagrantly abusing their power and authority to harm prisoners. Magellan also protected the prisoners by having Shiryu imprisoned.
  • He was noted to be insecure and suicidal after the prison break. In a conversation with Sengoku and Brannew, Sengoku says that Magellan should not take his own life over the incident showing sympathy for him.
  • Magellan takes his position as warden seriously and is genuinely loyal in Impel Down and loyal to the World Government. He can also be considered a well-intentioned extremist as the only thing he wants is to protect the rest of the world from the dangerous criminals in the prison by not allowing them to escape. This makes him different to other World Government members like Akainu, Rob Lucci, or Saturn who only cared for their personal values or power rather than real safety or justice.
