Inconsistently Heinous Wiki

Wake up to reality! Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world. The longer you live, the more you realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain, suffering and futility. Listen, everywhere you look in this world, wherever there is light, there will always be shadows to be found as well. As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will also exist. The selfish intent of wanting to preserve peace, initiates war. and hatred is born in order to protect love. There are nexuses causal relationships that cannot be separated. I want to sever the fate of this world. A world of only Victors. A world of only peace. A world of only love. I will create such a world. I am the Ghost Of The Uchiha. For truly this reality... is a Hell.
~ Madara discussing his philosophy of peace and his motives to enact the Infinite Tsukoyomi.

Madara Uchiha is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Obito Uchiha) of the manga/anime series Naruto. He was the leader of the Uchiha Clan, the older brother to Izuna Uchiha, the best friend and former arch-nemesis of Hashirama Senju, and the co-founder of the Hidden Leaf Village.

After experiencing personal losses throughout his life, including the loss of his brother, Izuna, and losing trust within the Hidden Leaf Village, Madara crafted the Eye of the Moon Plan in hopes that it would bring peace to the world. He betrayed the Hidden Leaf Village and have plotted for decades to try and carry out his plan by manipulating others and through brute force.

In Japanese, he was voiced by Naoya Uchida and in English, he was voiced by Neil Kaplan, both of whom gave him the voice of Obito Uchiha impersonating Madara. Kaplan has also voiced both Emperor Zarkon from Voltron: Legendary Defender and Theo Magath from Attack on Titan respectively.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • After falling into the Curse of Hatred, Madara became extremely egotistical, the point of developing a messiah complex. He detested having anyone stand behind him unlike the Hokage and believed that he could achieve his goals all by himself. He did not see Obito as an equal partner to him and only saw him as a pawn. He also only trusted Black Zetsu because Madara believed it to be an extension of himself and his will that he thought he created.
  • Madara is shown willing to go against the completion of the Eye of the Moon Plan if Obito was going to complete it. When he was about to be sealed, Madara smugly thanked Naruto for weakening Obito to save him the trouble of dealing with Obito himself. Madara wanted to be the one to complete the Infinite Tsukuyomi, even though Obito would have completed it, and would not have tolerated Obito completing the jutsu which further shows his egotism.
  • Unlike Obito, who was a nihilist and did not care about his own identity, Madara placed a lot of emphasis on his own identity. When confronting Obito, after the latter changed for the better, Madara admits to Obito that he was "Madara." Madara proclaimed that anyone who followed in the Eye of the Moon Plan was "Madara." He purposely denied Obito's identity in favor of his identity.
  • Madara is shown to be hypocritical. He told Obito that he wanted to be a messiah that would lead humanity to peace and end war. However, he is shown willing to fight and kill anyone who stood against him. For example, endangering the Hidden Leaf Village in the past and fighting the Allied Shinobi Forces who stood against him.
  • When Madara notices that he was facing an Allied Shinobi Force that comprised of the Five Great Nation. Madara ignores the idea that the villages that warred with one another for once is working together. In the past, Madara wanted peace between warring clans with Hashirama. When he notices the Allied Shinobi Forces, Madara does not hesitate to kill a great number of them to test out his new powers.
  • Madara is shown to be highly sadistic, and has a tendency to enjoy the suffering of others. In his battle against the Five Kage, Madara purposely held back his powers while taunting them with questions about how they want to engage in battle against him knowing they could not defeat him. He observed the Five Kage struggle a lot against his powers during the battle that lasted hours. In addition, he was gleeful while mockingly telling Obito that he manipulated him the entire time and that he ruined his life.
  • Madara is shown to be jaded and no longer believed in living in reality and the world as it is and rejecting any idea of hope that can be found in the world like the Will of Fire. He believes that the world is better off in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, where everyone lives in their own dream world.

Background[]

  • Madara prolonged the battles against the Senju Clan during the Warring States Period, even though Hashirama wanted peaceful alternative. This resulted in the deaths of many people.
  • After reading the Uchiha Stone Tablet, Madara crafted the Eye of the Moon Plan. Madara betrayed the Hidden Leaf Village by directly attacking it and endangering the lives of everyone within the village. He also brainwashed Kurama, the Nine-Tails, to use him as a weapon of mass destruction in his battle against Hashirama Senju during their battles.
  • Madara implanted the Rinnegan into Nagato after the latter awakened it. Madara's plan was to have another person manipulate Nagato into sacrificing his life to bring Madara back to life at a specific time in the future when a good portion of the Eye of the Moon was already completed.
  • Madara orchestrated the mind-control of the Mist Village ninjas during the Third World War by placing them under a genjutsu and having them seal the Three-Tails, Isobu, inside Rin Nohara, endangering her life.
  • While he rescued Obito during the Third Great Ninja World War and treated him, it was for his own purposes, and he decided to manipulate Obito by orchestrating a series of events that would result in Obito failing to save Rin, but instead witness Rin's death which would cause a lot of emotional anguish and pain to the point he would despair. This would make Obito more susceptible to Madara's manipulation and a useful pawn to carry out the Eye of the Moon Plan.
  • It is revealed that Madara placed a seal on both Rin's and Obito's heart.
    • With Rin, he intended to manipulate her so that she does not go out of his control when she was the jinchuuriki of the Three-Tails.
    • With Obito, he intended to keep Obito under his control, in death, so that Obito does not go rogue from his Eye of the Moon Plan.
  • His manipulation of the Obito would lead to the latter committed a lot of crimes which would lead to the deaths of many innocents and the start of a new world war, the Fourth Great Ninja World War.

Naruto: Shippuden[]

  • Upon being summoned by Kabuto Yakushi to fight against the Fourth Division Army during the Fourth Great Ninja World War, he attacked the army by killing many soldiers with various attacks before summoning two meteors to kill off a significant portion of the army.
  • He attempted to summon Kurama after the massacre of the Fourth Division Army, intending to use him for his own personal gain.
  • While fighting the Five Kage, he deliberately held back his full powers against his enemies while prolonging the battle for a long-time out of curiosity to see how strong his enemies are. He purposely made his enemies suffer as much as they can against his own powers while deriding them as being weaker than him. After prolonging the battle, Madara would defeat the Five Kage leaving each of them near-death while cutting Tsunade in two.
  • After reuniting with Obito on the latter's battlefield, and realizing the Eye of the Moon Plan went astray with Nagato betraying Obito and the latter attempting to revive the Ten-Tails in an incomplete form, Madara fought against Naruto and Killer B in an attempt to capture Kurama and Gyuki.
  • When the Ten-Tails is revived, Madara assisted Obito in using the power of the Tailed Beast to try and kill Naruto Uzumaki, Kurama, Killer B, Gyuki, Kakashi Hatake, and Might Guy with a Tailed Beast Ball. When the Allied Shinobi Forces appeared, Madara and Obito attempted to kill off all of them with an attack from the Ten-Tails.
  • While fighting the Allied Shinobi Forces, Madara and Obito guided the Ten-Tails to launch a Tailed Beast Ball at a populated area killing all the people in the area. In addition, the two Uchihas launched a Tailed Beast Ball at the Allied Shinobi Forces Headquarters killing most of the people stationed there to which Madara celebrated their achievement.
  • After Obito's battle against Kakashi, Madara attempted to force Obito to perform the Rinne Rebirth jutsu so the latter sacrifices his own life to bring Madara back to life.
  • When Obito is defeated by the Allied Shinobi Forces, Madara instructs Black Zetsu to force Obito to use the Rinne Rebirth jutsu on him, uncaring that he is sacrificing the life of his own partner.
  • He fought against the Tailed Beasts and managed to defeat all of them, including extracting Kurama from Naruto and Gyuki from Killer B, nearly killing both of them.
  • After incapacitating Tobirama Senju, Madara manages to subdue Sasuke and impale him through the chest with his own sword nearly killing him.
  • After surviving the Night Guy attack from Might Guy, Madara attempted to kill Might Guy while he was dying.
  • While battling an empowered Naruto and Sasuke, Madara attacked Kakashi by stealing his Mangekyo Sharingan eye for himself, leaving Kakashi with only one eye, so that Madara can use Kamui to get to the dimension where Obito was at to retrieve his Rinnegan.
  • Madara revealed to Obito the truth behind his manipulation by telling him that he was behind Rin's death and that Obito was easy to manipulate. Madara mocked Obito while showing no care about the anguish he put him through. Madara proceeded to replaced Obito's Mangekyo Sharingan eye with his own Rinnegan to empower himself.
  • After battling Team 7, Madara manages to perform the Infinite Tsukuyomi where he would place most of humanity in the dream world.
    • The act of putting the people under the Infinite Tsukyomi places them in a dream world that is false and is not realistically true peace. For the people caught in the dream world, in reality, they are all trapped against their volition inside of the jutsu that Madara performed. In addition, all the victims of the Madara's Infinite Tsukyomi are all manipulated under the jutsu and no longer have free will of their own since they are all under its effects.
    • While performing the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Madara performed the God of Nativity of a World of Trees jutsu to summon tree roots across the globe that would destroy many buildings while ensnaring most living beings into the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
  • After completing the Eye of the Moon Plan and the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Madara intended to finish off Team 7 to prevent them from undoing the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

In-General[]

  • In the past, Madara participated in the Warring States Period as a child where he lost his brothers and loved ones on the battlefield, shaping his philosophy of peace.
  • Madara loved his brother, Izuna Uchiha, and was willing to protect him at all costs. Madara was devastated over Izuna's death. Decades after Izuna's death, Madara would attack a reincarnated Tobirama during the Fourth Great Ninja World War out of revenge for killing his brother.
  • Madara was motivated by personal loss. Similarly to Hashirama, Naruto, Jiraiya, Obito, Nagato, Itachi, and Sasuke, Madara wanted to provide a solution to the perpetual cycle of war, hatred, and misery in the world. He is a well-intentioned extremist who wanted to create a world where there were no losers and only winners.
    • When Madara cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, each person's dreams showed the person happy with their life and achieving what they wanted. For example, Gaara's dream showed him clearly loved by his family and having a friend during his early childhood unlike what occurred in reality.
    • While the Infinite Tsukoyomi's true purpose was to mass-produce an army of Zetsus from the trapped people, Madara had no way to know that because of Black Zetsu's massive changes to the Uchiha Stone Tablet.
  • After being told that he was a pawn, experiencing betrayal, and being made into Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's vessel by Black Zetsu, Madara spends his final moments speaking to Hashirama. His final moments, shows pathos and sympathy for Madara where he acknowledged that Hashirama's way of pursuing peace was probably the right way by learning that entrusting things to the younger generation with care and truth is better than doing everything all by oneself.
  • In his final moments, Madara acknowledged Hashirama as a "war buddy" when the latter suggested that idea. Madara is shown to have closure with his friend and rival, Hashirama Senju, and overcoming the Curse of Hatred in the end making him have a faux redemption.

Anime-only[]

  • Before Madara is made into Kaguya's vessel by Black Zetsu, Black Zetsu informs him and Team 7, that the Infinite Tsukyomi is not a jutsu to bring about peaceful dreams and that the people trapped in the justu long enough would eventually transform into White Zetsus to build up Kaguya Otsutsuki's personal army. Madara was horrified to hear the truth of the jutsu and did not want the people in the jutsu to become White Zetsus. This showed his standards for how the people should be treated within the jutsu as he only intended for them to live out their lives in their dream world.
  • Prior to being sacrificed for Kaguya's revival, Madara had an internal monologue where he stated "Hashirama, where did I go wrong?". The scene showed sympathy for Madara by showing that in his most difficult and terrifying moment, Madara looked to Hashirama for guidance and reflection upon his own personal actions.
