Lucy, real name Kaede or Nyu is the main protagonist of the manga/anime series Elfen Lied.
She is the queen of the Diclonius, an evolutionary offshoot of the human race who plans to wipe out humanity after losing hope in it, however after she meets Kouta, she moves her plans to being loved and accepted by those around her as she struggles with her true nature. She is also the love interest of series deuteragonist Kouta.
In Japanese, she was voiced by Sanae Kobayashi. In English, she was voiced by Kira Vincent-Davis in the main series and Carli Mosier in the OVA.

- Due to the Elfen Lied series' narrative being reliant on making things up to the viewer to decide, it makes the following things below quite debatable:
- It is unknown if the unnamed orphan girl accidentally told Tomoo and his gang about her dog or was secretly an mole for them the entire time and pretended to be Lucy's friend, this is likely due to her being seen smiling when she covered her face, but it's possible it's just the trauma warping Lucy's memory.
- It is unknown if Aiko was killed or Lucy was only lied to about it by Kurama, but either way it still effected Lucy's mental state.
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
In General[]
- While some of her victims were killed out of self defense or to protect others, not all of them were outright villains.
- Despite the high heinous standard of Elfen Lied, she easily stands out since sets it up being the main character and for killing more people than any other Diclonius.

Both Adaptions[]
- She would end up killing Tomoo and his gang and an orphan girl, while Tomoo and his gang did bully her and kill pet her dog this shows she has no problem in killing children.
- While Tomoo and his gang did make her suffer, it isn't clear if the orphan girl did anything wrong to her, meaning she possibly killed someone innocent.
- She would end up killing families just to live in their homes to survive despite not wronging her in anyways even when some offered kindness to her.
- After fully giving into her hatred when she thought Kouta betrayed her, she would massacre many people at an festival even some who offered their sympathy to her thinking it was an trick and later killed Kouta's father and sister where she attempted to do the same with Yuka before Kouta's pleas to make her stop snapped her out. This would later give Kouta PTSD of the event though, he would've lost memories of it until he regained them later on.
- She would kill many people by using her vectors to trigger effects similar to heartattacks to throw off her pursuers which would later backfire and lead to her capture.
- She would kill many guards and researchers including one of Kurama’s assitants just to torment him due to her connection.
- She attempted to kill Yuka and Mayu only stopping due to her not wanting to hurt Kouta further.
- She would brutally attack Bando while it was out of self defense she went overboard and torture him in showing some sadism.
- She would brutally dismember Nana when she learned her connection with Kurama to make him suffer.
- She would still manage to best Bando even in their rematches in each adaption though played out differently however she brutally beatens him alive and nearly kills him.
Anime[]
- She would end brutally trying to kill Nana even more brutally than in the Manga.
- She would kill many soldiers in brutal fashions despite her intentions of protecting Kouta.
Manga[]
- She would attempt to kill Mariko to torment Kurama after killing Shirakawa until an explosion turned her back into Nyu.
- After killing the Unknown Man and battling Bando & Nana, after she saw Mayu noticed her true self she attempted to kill her to silence her only stopped by Bando pushing Mayu taking blow of her vectors instead.
- She would end up killing her own half-brother despite him not wronging her in anyway.
- Her act of destroying the Diclonius Research Institution would end up triggering an massive earthquake and tidal wave.
- After seeing Kouta getting shot by Kurama she driven into destroying the Earth killing thousands before stopping to heal him instead.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- To say she is way too tragic and sympathetic to be Near Pure Evil is a massive understatement, as she was heavily mistreated for mostly her entire life to the point of breaking and snapping which drove her into villainy for multiple reasons:
- She was orphaned when her father disowned her because of her horns and he done it against her mother's wishes who wanted keep her where he abandoned her in a forest that she stated was freezing cold all alone with no clothes before being found.
- She was heavily mistreated by everyone in a orphanage where the adults shunned her and allowed Tomoo and his gang to heavily bully her with only an random girl and pet her dog to keep her company until she reached her snapping point when Tomoo killed her dog while his gang held her down while she thought the orphan girl betrayed her, so she ultimately snapped and killed her tormentors and former friend.
- Her act of massacring the festival and Kouta's father and sister was due to the Diclonius DNA Voice gaslighting her by using an misunderstanding with Kouta to make her believe he betrayed her, since he only lied to her thinking it would hurt her if he ended up being his cousin is an girl, not realizing she would visit it or what would unfold.
- The apparent loss of Aiko and torture through the Diclonius Research Institution’s experiments ultimately drive her further into madness and cause her to want to make Kurama suffer the same pain she did.
- What is worse when she later found out her mother tried to find her but got captured and raped by Director Kakuzawa into having an half-brother before Lucy's mother was driven to suicide from the trauma.
- All of her trauma she went through would come to a head when Kurama shot Kouta by accident, ultimately driving Lucy to destroying Earth so it wouldn't rob her of anyone else she cared about, before reversing it to heal Kouta. While she did try to destroy Earth again, this was due to the DNA Voice completely controlling her body against her will.
- Nearly all of those make her played for extreme sympathy, ultimately showing how much hell she suffered and was tormented in her entire life.
- She has moral agency issues due to the DNA Voice gaslighting her further using her trauma to make her lose her humanity further.
- Due to her severe mistreatment and her Diclonius nature, this not only make her a villain by proxy but a MASSIVE scapegoat due to her only wanting to be accepted and loved by someone and despite it being claimed in-universe all Diclonius are violent to humans due to the DNA Voice, Nana wasn't violent towards humans since she received enough love, this proves Lucy would not have been driven to villainy if she was treated better.
- She truly cared for others like Kouta, Mayu (despite trying to kill her in one instance), Yuka, Nozomi, Nana (after fully allying with her), her dog and her mother. She cares for animals caring for her pet and she truly loved Kouta more than anyone else being the only reason she didn't exterminate humanity long ago.
- She is On & Off as herself and Nyu do good things at times, protecting Kouta and her other friends at times before fully redeeming herself where she ultimately felt remorse for actions mainly killing Kouta’s sister and brother where she changes for the better.
- In the manga, she promised Kouta she wouldn't kill anymore, and it was only ruined thanks to the DNA Voice making her attack Kurama when she let him try to shoot her and later when he accidentally shot Kouta trying to protect her which would lead to her driven into destroying Earth.
- Her supposed deaths in the anime and manga were played for massive sympathy in-universe and by the narrative:
- In the anime, after expresseing remorse for her actions to Kouta and kissing him, she allows herself to be seemly shot to death and is implied to survive by somehow returning to the Mapple Inn.
- In the manga, after using her energy to heal Kouta where she seemly melt alive, she & Nyu would give up their lives to stop the DNA Voice, begging Kouta to mercy-kill her, which he did. It is heavily implied she and her Nyu personality are reincarnated as twins ultimately reuniting with Kouta ten years later.
Trivia[]
- Lucy is the so far the only Elfen Lied Inconsistently Heinous so far as well the only Elfen Lied character to be Inconsistently Heinous & Inconsistently Admirable simultaneously.
- To point out her sympathetic traits, none of her fans felt remorse about her killing Tomoo & his gang due to their severe mistreatment of her and some who saw the manga saw her death as way too cruel of an end believing she deserved an happier ending due to the torment she went through in life.
