~ Lope de Aguirre to Prince Joachim. |
Lope de Aguirre is one of the two main antagonists (along with Prince Joachim) of the 2021 Disney live-action film Jungle Cruise, based on the Disney theme park attraction of the same name.
He was a Spanish conquistador and Frank Wolf's arch-nemesis and former friend/brother-in-arms. Aguirre was cursed by the Chief of the Guardians of the Jungle due to trying to claim the Tears of the Moon, getting imprisoned alongside his fellow conquistadores within the jungle.
He was portrayed by Édgar Ramírez.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Upon being refused by the Puka Machuna Tribe's chief for the arrowhead to find the Tears of the Moon tree, Aguirre killed him and had his men burn the village to the ground and was going to kill every last one of the villagers, even after they saved him and his men.
- He brutally stabbed his brother in arms Francisco Lopes de Heredia for betraying him.
- He tried to kill the Village chief's daughter, but the chief used his final words to put a curse on him, Francisco, and his other 3 soldiers to make them immortal but never leave the river again or else the jungle will drag them back.
- He fought Francisco for 100 years while stabbing him so many times until Francisco trapped Aguirre and his men inside a cave turning them to stone.
- He was discovered by Prince Joachim and was resurrected. but his body fused with snakes so he tracks down Francisco (now known as Frank Wolf) and Lily Houghton back to the Pika Machuna tribe, where he leads an attack on the tribe killing several people to try and get the arrowhead.
- He attempts to kill Frank by stabbing him in the heart again.
- He directly orders Prince Joachim to find Frank and Lily so he can kill them by giving Joachim their location.
- When he is betrayed by Joachim, Lope uses his snakes to attack Joachim and attempt to kill him while he and the other conquistadors attack Frank in his boat to free himself from his curse, but it was a trap and the river was blocked off getting himself, Frank, and the other Conquistadors dragged into a wall and turned into stone again.
- Although Prince Joachim is worse due to attempting to murder 400 people in the Pika Machuna tribe with a torpedo, he has more resources since he's the prince of Germany whereas Aguirre is just a mercenary. Thus, they can't be compared to each other.
- Even if Aguirre's resources were comparable to the ones that Joachim has, he'd still stand out due to his high kill count which even exceeds Joachim's successful body count of 4. Aguirre, on the other hand, has 8 kills to his name, allowing him to pass the Heinous Standards.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too sympathetic to be Near Pure Evil:
- He was originally a good man and mercenary who's daughter got sick with a terminal illness, so Aguirre went on an expedition to find the tree which who's petals can heal any wounds, sickness and curse. so he can save his daughter and had his men killed in the jungle one by one.
- When he and his other 4 soldiers including Francisco were saved by a tribe, they were refused the arrowhead and the conquistadors attacked, only for the chief to curse them with a fate worse than death by making them immortal but never leave sight of the river again, and was enraged that he never got to see his daughter again after everything.
- Eventually, after 100 years, Francisco put him and the others in an "And I Must Scream" fate, by trapping them in a cave without any sight to the river turning them into stone for 300 years, while the jungle ravaged his bodies, eventually they got freed by Joachim to help find the tree to free them from their curse, and Joachim used them for his plans and later betrayed them.
- In his final moments before being turned to stone again and he says to Francisco that this was a fate worse than death, showing he never got over it.
- He's a well-intentioned extremist who only wanted the tree's healing powers to save his daughter.
- He cares for his daughter, as he couldn't imagine a world without her, and was determined to save her.
Trivia[]
- He's a unique example of an Inconsistently Heinous character, as his preventions are rather small, but he's only Inconsistently Heinous merely because of his tragic backstory that is given too much focus for him to be Near Pure Evil.
