Laura Barns, also known as Billie227, is the main antagonist of the 2014 screenlife supernatural horror film Unfriended.
She used to be a normal teenage girl who was popular at her school and well-liked by her friends. However, one night during a party, Laura was the intoxicated subject of a humiliating video, leading to her being cyber-bullied until she's incapable and committed suicide. After her suicide, she returned as a vengeful spirit with an online alias, and spitefully set her revenge against those who made her life miserable, notably her former childhood friend Blaire Lily.
Her past self and her vengeful spirit are portrayed and voiced by Heather Sossaman.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- She killed Val Rommel by forcing her to drink bleach.
- She hijacked Adam Sewell's phone as the voice operator for 911, which prevented everyone in the group to contact the authorities, resulting in the elongated response of random strangers Blaire Lily chatted on Chatroulette to call the cops past halfway through the film.
- When Ken Smith found her face-cam, she possessed and tortured him by enforcing himself against the desk repeatedly before sticking his hand into an activated blender and shredding it, later finishing him off by forcing him to pierce his neck into the blades of that same blender.
- She made the group play a game of "Never Have I Ever", forcing them to reveal dirty secrets that they hid from each other before such as Blaire crashing Jess’s car while drunk, and cheating on Mitch Roussel with Adam behind his back, the former exposing Adam for selling marijuana, the latter for raping Ashley and impregnating her, and many others.
- She threatened to kill Mitch if he left the room, which caused Blaire to reveal her note in order to save him, which would also cause Laura to possess Adam and force him to shoot himself. Although Adam deserved his fate for raping Ashley and forcing her abortion, it's still considered forced and enforced suicide on both Laura and Blaire.
- She killed Jess Felton in a very gruesome manner by shoving a hot curling iron down her throat, and tormenting Blaire further by making a meme out of her fate, stating, "LOOKS LIKE SHE FINALLY STFU" for everyone to humiliate.
- When Blaire told her that Mitch was the one who posted the embarrassing video of her, she killed him by forcing him to stab himself in the eye.
- Afterwards, she posted the full embarrassing video of herself exposing Blaire as the cameraman, causing her to receive a lot of hate comments for doing so and shattering her reputation before killing her herself. Still, this is rather cathartic considering that Blaire humiliated her with that video and was willing to sell out her friends and even her boyfriend to save her own skin.
- While she does have comedic moments such as her using a meme about Jess' death, they never detract from her villainy as they are only meant to emphasize how heinous she is.
- Her atrocities against all of Blaire's friends is what made her pass the heinous standards of the franchise; her methods of murdering particular innocents who don't deserve a gruesome death, specifically Val, Ken, Jess, and Mitch, who were one-time bads but not despicable or pathetic as Adam and Blaire. In comparison, Laura is more gruesome than Adam on-screen, who wouldn't go out of his way to kill anyone, and even yet, Blaire.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She has a genuine tragedy where she was humiliated by her own best friend, Blaire, and was cyberbullied by others to the point where she committed suicide, making her actions arguably justifiable to a degree and turning her into a scapegoat too. In fact, some of those kills were done because they were involved in her death such as:
- Val Rommel, because she rejected Laura's plea of removing the humiliating video and rekindling friendship, and telling her to commit suicide,
- Ken Smith, due to stating that Laura deserved her fate for being a "bully,"
- Adam Sewell, because he drugged Laura during the party,
- Jess Felton, because she vandalized Laura's grave after her death,
- Mitch Roussel, because he posted the humiliating video of Laura,
- and finally, Blaire Lily, who filmed the original video.
- Hence the original redeeming factor, she's also considered an anti-villain and a villain by proxy due to her past. Her villainous deeds weren't committed until after she committed suicide, and that she didn't have any intentions or will of committing them until after that fact and that of Blaire's irrational decisions.
- She has a sense of honor as she was willing to let Blaire’s friends live if Blaire told her the truth about who posted the embarrassing video of her, only killing them when Blaire cowardly refused to do so.
- The film's viral marketing campaign revealed that she once saved a young boy from drowning.
