~ Larry after being asked his meaning of life |
Laurence "Larry" Needlemeyer or simply known as just Larry is a supporting character in the Cartoon Network animated sitcom series The Amazing World of Gumball. He's seen working in almost every business in Elmore, be it grocery stores, gas stations, pizza places, restaurants, barbershops and more. He is so important to Elmore that if he quits all of his jobs, it would cause the apocalypse as we see in "The Pizza".
He was voiced by Kerry Shale who also voiced The Virus in the same show.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- In where perhaps he's at his worst and does his most terrible action is in "The Job", where he constantly refused to fire Richard despite being aware he was destroying the universe, he even goes as far to do nothing but watch all the chaos happen and still refused to fire Richard even when he saw him affecting and destroying reality, because in his words he was doing nothing wrong, and only fired him in the ending after he found out he was eating the pizzas he was delivering.
- To make emphasis on how Richard was destroying the universe, everything in reality was changing and warping the universe everytime he worked more and more, to the point it affected everything in existence, as even time itself started to get affected as in some parts of Elmore it was night when it was supposed to be noon, and in others there was snow when they were supposed to be in June, later he erases the force of gravity itself and started affecting celestial bodies such as The Sun, who was turned into a moon, and this got only worse and worse when he was about to deliver the last pizza, as his steps turned clouds into stones and kept distorting and warping the whole universe, and Larry was just standing there while The Watterson children still tried to convince him to fire Richard. In the end he was going to let everything be destroyed until Paperball complained about the pizza Richard delivered.
- In "The Pizza" due to the Wattersons disrespecting him he quits from all his jobs, which results in the collapse of Elmore's economy and infrastructure, resulting in a violent apocalypse where everyone became savages and the city was in flames in the span of 5 minutes, though it is kinda understandable in Larry's part given the harsh treatment he received from The Wattersons.
- During "The Return" he refused to save The Watterson children from being transported to another country.
- In "The Nest" he selfishly steals Mr. Small's van "Janice" and drives away, leaving him trapped with The Evil Turtle's babies so he can save himself.
- In "The Night", when he thinks that the Donut Cop's request is just another dream, rather than try to check if it's a dream or not, he starts messing with him, kissing and licking him, resulting in Donut Cop arresting him.
- In "The Loophole" he engages in a small fight with Mr. Small over the pronunciation of "quinoa" and later "potatoes".
- In "The Stars" he was going to give his website a five-star review so it would become unstoppable forever, all because Richard refused to admit he was bald.
- It's important to note the website was collapsing Elmore's society and preventing anyone from doing their jobs, Which is something Larry already knew when he was going to make the website remain in power for eternity.
- In "The Menu" he encouraged Richard to eat a burger of every Joyful Burger location in Elmore, which caused him to become very fat and puts his life at great risk, to the point where his heart barely pumped.
- Despite the series's high heinous standard, Larry manages to stand out thanks to his act of knowingly endangering the whole universe, an act that is so unique it isn't done by any other character except Gumball.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's the biggest scapegoat in the entire series, as he's treated like a punching bag by all the other characters and is the butt-monkey of the series, rare are the occasions where something terrible doesn't happen to him, and to make it worse he barely gets acknowledged as a person despite all his hard work, making it really hard to not feel bad for him due to all the misfortune he has. To start off with some of the worst examples:
- In "The Spoon" he gets robbed by Sal Left-Thumb and taken as a hostage.
- In "The Laziest" his whole personal life is ruined by Gumball and Darwin out of their selfish wishes of wanting Larry to compete in a Lazy-Off with Richard, and they do this by constantly begging him to do it while causing him extreme paranoia, causing him to lose everything, his job, his car and even his girlfriend.
- In "Halloween" he gets mistaken as a wanted criminal thanks to Gumball and Darwin and gets unfairly arrested.
- In "The Game" he's a victim of Nicole's prank call, which leads him to talking with himself and realizing all the jobs are messing with his head.
- In "The Law" Felicity Parham assaults him and beats him up to steal his ice-cream truck despite him not doing anything to deserve it.
- In "The Pizza" he constantly gets disrespected and yelled at by The Wattersons despite his hard work, and the worst thing is that he doesn't even get acknowledged as a person, leading him to quit all his jobs.
- In "The Butterfly" his parking space is stolen by Mr. Robinson. Later, he crashes his car.
- In "The Gift" he's forced to receive an explosive flash that burns his retinas everytime he has to give a party invitation to Masami's party.
- In "The Night" he is seen sleeping and dreaming multiple times, then gets landed in jail for disrespecting the Donut Cop after mistakenly believing he was dreaming.
- In "The Stars" Gumball and Darwin constantly torment him with the threat of a bad review to get free stuff from him.
- Due to the comedic nature of the show, as well as how his character is a parody of minimum wage employees who struggle to make ends meet, he is played for laughs every single time he's onscreen, including his major appearances. Even his worst actions of refusing to fire Richard because "tearing apart the fabric of the universe is not a dismissible offense," causing the apocalypse because he quit all his jobs, and giving the website a 5-star review because Richard wouldn't admit that he is bald are really hard to take seriously.
- He is in love with Karen and constantly attempts to marry her, which sadly never ends up good for him.
- He's truly affable to everyone despite how they may treat him, always trying to be civil and respectful with his customers and other people.
- He's a grey-zoned character who doesn't really take participation in heroic or villainous deeds most of the time, and if he does they are mostly out of self-serving needs rather than being truly heroic or villainous.
Trivia[]
- In terms of moral scaling, Larry is the opposite of Rob from the same series, as Larry is a Heroic Benchmark and a Non-Villain Inconsistently Heinous, whereas Rob is an Inconsistently Admirable Non-Hero and a Villainous Benchmark.
