His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Interfering with humans is against the rules for spirits because of Raava and Vaatu, but Koh did it anyway.
- For thousands of years Koh stole faces from anyone who showed emotion in his presence or who he believed deserved it. He has apparently stolen millions of faces over many centuries.
- Losing one's face is fate worse than death. The victims would be unable to see, hear, smell, talk, or eat. Avatar Koruk talk about such a fate as if the victim had died.
- Koh stole the face of a woman named Ummi right before her wedding day, in order to spite her husband, who he deemed arrogant and lazy.
- He stole the face of a young man named Rafa, for stealing something from him that he had intended to give back, intending to keep him that way for eternity.
- He refused to give a clear answer about the whereabouts of the moon and ocean spirits, despite knowing how many people would die if Aang did not get that information.
- He would have stolen Aang's face had he shown emotion, despite knowing the fate of the world was resting on the boy's shoulders.
- He would later try to steal Aang's face again when the young avatar was in the spirit world after nearly dying.
- In general, he has a sadistic personality and enjoys stealing faces, as well as trying to make people show emotion with his grotesque appearance. It is taken with the proper gravity too, that there is nothing funny about robbing people of their faces in context and that he passes the heinous standard for it.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Spirits have a different sense of morality than humans do, giving Koh moral agency issues. Unlike Vaatu, who cares about nothing except for killing people, Koh has a more complex characterization, cementing his unorthodox morality.
- He mostly steals faces from those who he believes deserve it, making him an extremist. He also did not take advantage of Korra's three-year absence to steal faces from around Republic City when he easily could have.
- He is honorable and did not hold Aang accountable for trying to corrupt him out of existence in a past life. He also did end up giving Aang the information he desired for free and let him leave.
- He cares about his mother, and everything he did was to get closer to her.
Trivia[]
- He, Jet, and Azula are the only Avatar characters from the first series to be Inconsistently Heinous.
- He and The Fog of Lost Souls are the only spirits in the Avatar universe to be Inconsistently Heinous.
- He promised Aang they would meet again, though such claim never came to be true, either in the original series or in its sequel, The Legend of Korra. Had Koh actually appeared more than once, it is possible his status could be altered.
