Humans constantly feel pain in their hearts. Because the heart is so sensitive to pain, humans also feel that to live is to suffer. You're so delicate, like glass, especially your heart.
~ Kaworu Nagisa

Kaworu Nagisa is an anti-villainous character in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and its finale film The End of Evangelion. He is the vessel of the soul of the progenitor of angels, Adam, and implied lover of the protagonist Shinji Ikari.

He is introduced as a replacement pilot following Asuka Langley Sohryu's unsuccessful suicide attempt, who shows incredible syncing capabilities with the EVA unit and develops a deep and emotional relationship with Shinji before being revealed to be the angel Tabris in human form, sent by SEELE under the impression that he would be used to initiate a version of Third Instrumentality that would kill all humans and leave angels the sole remaining species while in reality being used to initiate SEELE's vision of forcibly fusing all humans into a collective consciousness. As a result of his encounters with Shinji and his general love of humanity, he rejects his biological purpose and allows himself to be killed after discovering the entity underneath the NERV premises was Lilith and not Adam.

Following his death, he re-appears in The End of Evangelion, where he returns to his physical body of Adam and re-appears in a spectral form after being fused with Lilith, and appears in a spectral form to Shinji to demonstrate his emotional connection and attachment to him.

He was voiced by Akira Ishida in the Japanese version, and by Kyle Sturdivant in the English Dub.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • As Adam, he created the race of Angels, which would be placed into conflict against Lilins, and would later attempt to repeatedly annihilate the world by invading SEELE's headquarters, making him responsible for the entire plot of the series.
  • Upon being awakened, he initiated Second Impact, which unleashed the Angels from hibernation, caused the global climate to change dramatically, melted the polar ice caps, and killed billions of people, including Misato's father.
  • Working as a sleeper agent for SEELE, he was told by them that they were a rogue faction that favored the angels and were deliberately attempting to destroy humanity, and infiltrates NERV's headquarters with the intention to initiate Third Impact and destroy humanity. While other Angels had already attempted to do this, they are beings with intelligence that humans could not hope to understand and which could not understand ours. Kaworu was fully sentient at this point, and had a human body.
  • When he allows himself to be killed to save humanity, he forces Shinji to do so, which causes Shinji to enter an extreme suicidal depression that is partially responsible for him breaking and initiating Third Impact, making Kaworu partially responsible.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He suffers from moral agency issues, as while he was intelligent as Adam, the intelligence exhibited by Angels is completely removed from the moral concerns that would be considered by humans, and he likely did not recognize he was doing anything wrong.
  • He still suffers from moral agency issues after being implanted into a human body, as he was raised as a sleeper agent for SEELE's agenda since birth and presumably did not have extended human interaction.
  • He is tragic, as the species he created was forced into a battle with another as a result of them arbitrarily both landing on one planet, forcing them into a conflict where only one would be allowed to exist, and after being put into a human body, is implied to have been raised in a loveless and disconnected fashion by SEELE.
  • Even prior to his redemption, he showed a considerable degree of respect and interest in human culture, especially their music.
  • Subverts most of his corrupting traits by deciding to allow himself to be killed to allow humanity to continue, deciding they should inherit the earth instead of his creation, and that he would be unable to tolerate a world where he was completely alone, and thanks Shinji for providing him with emotional connection.
  • He genuinely loved Shinji, having a major crush on him no matter how twisted and turbulent it was.
  • Despite causing extreme trauma to Shinji, him forcing Shinji to kill him was genuinely motivated out of a misguided/twisted expression of love.
