“ | If Marley grows strong and attempts to take the lives of the royal family or its Founding Titan... I will accept it. If Marley decides to exterminate all Eldians, I will accept it. That is how grave the crimes of us Eldians are. They can never be atoned for. Eldians... Titans... they never should have existed in the first place. I will accept the responsibility of righting this wrong. Only, until the day that this retribution comes, I want to live inside the Walls... I want to enjoy this brief paradise, this world without conflict. Please, I ask that you only grant me this. | „ |
~ Willy Tybur quoting Karl's last words. |
King Karl Fritz, also known as the 145th King of Eldia and later King Reiss, is a posthumous antagonist of the Attack on Titan anime/manga series. He is the creator of the Wall Titans, which he created out of guilt for the atrocities of his ancestors.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- While overthrowing the Eldian Empire was justified given the atrocities they committed, he still deliberately started a huge war, the Great Titan War, which presumably caused a large number of casualties.
- After causing the begin of the war and the Marleyan uprising by conspiring with the Tybur family, he left most of the Eldians on the continent, as he couldn't bring the entire population of the world's Eldians to Paradis Island, leaving most of them be conquered and oppressed by Marley and the world's other nations, which makes him responsible for the rise of the new Marleyan Empire and the suffering of all the Subjects of Ymir in the world's internment zones.
- He used "tens of millions" of Colossal Titans to create walls through Titan hardening and isolate the people on the island who came with him from the rest of the world, then used the Founding Titan's power of the Coordinate to brainwash all the people into forgetting about the rest of the world and its history, and believing that they were the only humans left in the world. This was a mistake, as it made the Eldians unwary of their sins, which made them unable to try making amends with the world makes their suffering unwarranted.
- To make things worse, he left a final message to the royal family outside the Walls and Marley, threatening the Wall Titans were going to destroy the entire world, if his kingdom was ever attacked. While the threat was a bluff and served as a deterrent to avoid any immediate attacks on the Walls, he framed Eldia as unrepentant in humanity's eyes and estabilished its remaining population as a global-level threat to the world.
- He created a vow renouncing war which would make any future inheritor of the Founder with royal blood unable to use the complete and true Founding Titan's power to either protect the Subjects of Ymir or even try to solve the problem of the existence of the Titans by talking to Ymir Fritz's spirit, which makes him responsible for the brainwashing of numerous members of the Reiss family throughout a century, including Rod and Uri's father, Uri, and Frieda. He is also indirectly responsible for the non-magical brainwashing of the entire Reiss family, such as Rod Reiss.
- He is responsible for the totalitarian and controlling system within the Walls, controlled by the Royal Government for over 100 years, making him indirectly responsible for the corruption by the government's nobility, the Interior Police, and the Church's leaders, and several murders done by them, such as the demises of Erwin's father, an unnamed digger, a gun maker, Armin's parents, Alma, Pastor Nick, and Dimo Reeves.
- Instead of trying to learn about the Founder Ymir to have her soul finally leave the world of the living, or at least command her to stop building Titans for eternity, he chose to use her to create his own self-indulgent "paradise" within the Walls, to realize his ideal utopia, staying neutral to the Titan issue, refusing to make any further change, and believing the sole form of atonement for the Subjects of Ymir was death, as punishment for all the millions of lives that were stolen or ruined by Eldia.
- He planned on letting all the Eldians be killed by the outside world if they were to to seek revenge for Eldia's domination, which makes him indirectly responsible for all of Marley’s attacks on the Walls, given he put them in this position.
- When some noble families of the Walls, including the Ackermans and Azumabitos, rebelled against the Reiss royal family, either himself or his following inheritors brainwashed by him (depending on when the rebellions occured) ordered them to be all hunted down and killed, as they were immune to the Founder's control, making him responsible for the near extinction of the Ackerman family.
- It was also believed within the Walls that he had caused the near extinction of the Oriental people and the Azumabito clan, until it was subsequently revealed that humanity outside the Walls was still alive and thriving, and that the Azumabito were still alive, wealthy, prosperous, and active at Hizuru, although no longer the nation's rulers.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He felt intense remorse for the crimes of the Eldian Empire and genuinely felt sickened at the constant and long oppression and injustice towards humanity's other groups, notably the descendant people of the fallen Marley, and tried to atone by making sure Eldians could no longer harm the rest of the world.
- By instigating the Great Titan War, he ended the tyranny of Eldia over the world and caused the revival of numerous fallen nations, including the revival of Marley.
- He is an anti-villain, as he genuinely wanted to free humanity from the terror of the Titans and his empire's cruelty, and sought to protect Marley and the rest of the world from Eldia, believing that Titans and Subjects of Ymir would always threaten the rest of the world and should have never existed in the first place.
- Despite believing all Eldians deserve to die as a sign of atonement, he did desire to create a paradise for Eldians so that the end of their time could be peaceful showing he has some care for his own race.
