| ~ Junko challenging Reimu Hakurei to battle |
Junko is the main antagonist of Touhou Project 15: Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom and the overarching antagonist of Touhou 14.5: Urban Legend in Limbo. She is a divine spirit who wields the power to purify anything. Junko's purity however works differently from the Lunarian's purity, while the Lunarian's purity is themed around 'No Sins' purity, Junko's purity is more scientific by refining things.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes her Heinous?[]
- Murdered Hou Yi after the death of her son.
- Prior to the events of the story, she attacked the Lunar Capital in the past multiple times, with the Lunar Capital barely being able to fend her off.
- Started a war and led an invasion on the Moon with an army of purified fairies against the Lunarians, planning to use the fairy's life force to 'poison' the Lunarians with impurities.
- She had Hecatia Lapislazuli trap the Lunarians in the dream realm when they tried to escape there to leave the Lunar Capital defenseless so she could assassinate Change'e.
- She will go out of her way to torture or at least upset Chang'e, infact, the entire reason she set up the invasion in the first place was to kill the secured Chang'e and oppress the Lunarians.
- Her actions have way more of an impact than other Touhou villains because it is heavily likely Junko is responsible for not only the events of Touhou 15 directly, but also indirectly responsible for the events of Touhou 14.5, the only character caused the events of more games than Junko is Kanako Yasaka.
- Unlike other Touhou bosses who use spell cards with pretty and beautiful patterns in their attacks, Junko lacks any complicated patterns or shapes in her moveset because she designed it not to show off, but simply to kill.
- Tried to kill the heroines when they confronted her.
- Even after her redemption, she still voices her desires to one day get back at Chang'e and the Lunar Capital.
What Makes her Inconsistent?[]
- She's too tragic for NPE, as she was based off Chún Hú (纯狐), a Chinese legendary figure mentioned in the Zuǒ Zhuàn historical narrative and Tiānwèn poems. Chún Hú, also known as "Xuán Qī" (玄妻, lit. "dark lady"), became the wife of a Xia Dynasty ruler, Hòu Yì (后羿), who usurped the previous ruler (Chún Hú's former husband) and married Chún Hú; later killing her son Bó Fēng (伯封). Chún Hú then conspired with Yi's minister to kill him as revenge. This account seems to line up with statements about Junko's past from Reisen's ending in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom. Despite sharing a name, the Hou Yi of the Xia Dynasty was not necessarily the same one who married Chang'e and shot down the ten suns in legend. The conflation of various historical figures named "Hou Yi" has been the subject of at least one contemporary academic paper. Within the Touhou Project however, the disparate Hou Yi's appear to be treated as a single person. While her tragedy may not justify her actions completely, it is still played for sympathy and makes her actions understandable.
- She is genuinely affable towards others, speaking in a calm polite manner at all times. Though this is a minor prevention, since her rage is so purified that she no longer acts enraged.
- If certain conditions are met in the game, she will recognize the heroines as pure and honorably accepts defeat before the battle begins.
- She forms a genuine friendship with Hecatia and Clownpiece, this is not pragmatic for their shared goals, and she seems to enjoy both of their company.
- Redeems herself by calling off her invasion upon finding out the Lunarians would invade and conquer Gensokyo if Junko continued with her plan, showing that she is unwilling to affect innocents.
- Her moral agency is non-existent due to transforming into a divine spirit of pure pain, anger and misery, to the point where she stop exhibiting anger.
Trivia[]
- She and Hecatia Lapislazuli are the only Touhou Project Inconsistently Heinous to be from Legacy of the Lunatic Kingdom.
