“ | Well Riley, looks like it's just you and me. Riley, you're gonna be happy and nothing else, and there's only one thing that makes me happy... You'll get what's coming to you... A knife to the back's not the worst thing that could happen, a blade to the throat is not either! A shiv to the gut is not gonna be the worst either, you know why? Because the worst kind of torture is the one that lives inside your brain. Riley, You better listen to- to Mama Joy, you know why? Cause Mama Joy knows it's your best! | „ |
~ Joy at the end of Outside In as she goes completely insane and begins torturing Riley. |
Joy is the main protagonist of Dane Powroznik's animated parody Outside In, the main antagonist of its horror sequel Outside In 2, and the main protagonist of Outside In 2 (Advertiser Friendly Edition). Unlike her original counterpart, who was a slight control freak, here Joy is a psycho who is obsessed with trying to keep Riley "happy".
She was voiced by Terri Powrozink.
Her Evil Rankings[]
Debated Validations[]
- After calling out Schizophrenia to help her with problems with Riley, she was horrified to see that Skitz and the executives were messing around Riley's mind to ruin her life. When Joy threw them out of the window to stop them from continuing it, it is possible that she does this out of pragmatism to take control of Riley.
- It isn’t implied if Joy was a well-intentioned extremist or not. Joy used to make Riley happy, however she began to lose her mind after Skitz and the executives tried to mess with Riley's mind. While trying to control Riley and "encouraging" her to be "happy", it is shown that her extremism isn't well-intentioned as she's actually mentally breaking Riley which is traumatizing her despite hypocritically saying she's doing it for good which other emotions are appalled with. However, she lost all of her sympathy once she had gone completely insane and became much worse. This action is what led to her death in the first place.
- After the doctor ate Joy's corpse, it was unknown if he was either under Joy's influence or he was brainwashed by her as she possibly get inside of his mind. This remains debatable.
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
Outside In[]
- She regularly abuses Sadness for no particular reason including refusing to let her volunteer to be a monitor, threatening her and sending her back to the circle.
- When Skitz and the executives messed up Riley's mind to try and ruin her life, Joy throws them out of the window and leaves them to be forgotten in the memory dump.
Outside In 2[]
- While she initially appeared to be just like her original film counterpart, she loses all of her sympathy once she becomes obsessed with keeping Riley all to herself and killing anyone who stands in her way, endangering her and causing her to lose her mind in process.
- Fear also pointed out that if Riley dies, Joy will die along with the rest of her emotions.
- When Sadness tried consoling her and telling her that she has been taking her obsession with Riley a bit far, Joy didn't care and threatened to kill her if she didn't get back in her circle, hurting her feelings in process.
- When confronted by the other emotions for her actions, she tried to hypocritically justify her actions and threatened to kill them if she gets near Riley. After they left, Joy had become insane.
- She murdered and ate a spider alive in a rather gruesome manner even after it saved her.
- When she's confronted by Anger after getting back to headquarters she ends up killing him by breaking his neck.
- Licked Disgust on her cheek to make her sick and vomit before she dies from shock.
- Her murderous instincts indirectly caused Fear to commit suicide by jumping out the window.
- Turning Riley into a horrific monster and makes her devoured her own father before she chases her mother in process, what makes this worse is that Riley’s father even states “NOT THIS AGAIN!”, meaning she did this before.
- When Sadness was horrified over her actions, Joy claimed that Riley's having a "great time" and she's so "happy" right now. She even called herself Riley's "new daddy" as well.
- Seeing that Sadness turning a core memory from happy to sad, she ended up struggling over it and broke it into pieces, causing her to snap even more.
- After carving the smile on her face, she tried to carve one on Sadness' face before she head-butts her and pushes the Emergency Shutdown button, reverting Riley back to normal.
- Before ranting about how she tried to "take" Riley away from her ever since she was born, she stabs Sadness with the glass shard and was about to kill her before she was impaled by a lobotomy probe.
- While she was slowly dying, she is clearly seen smiling, showing that she didn't care about what she did.
- She lacks any redeeming qualities her original counterpart had.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- Despite being easily heinous and lacks any redeeming traits, her actions are played for dark humor. Also, Outside In is ultimately a parody that is never meant to be taken seriously.
- Due to how insane she becomes in the sequel it's possible she has moral agency issues.
Trivia[]
- This version of Joy is, alongside the YTP version of Mr. Incredible, one of the two Pixar Animation fanon villains to be Inconsistently Heinous.
