I am your Father, and you are my children. And together, we will march to Eden’s Gate.
~ Joseph Seed

Joseph Seed, also known as "The Father," is the main antagonist of the 2018 Ubisoft video game Far Cry 5 and the deuteragonist of its alternate-timeline sequel Far Cry: New Dawn. He is also the titular main protagonist of the Far Cry 6 DLC Joseph.

He is the leader of the religious doomsday cult "Project at Eden's Gate" in Hope County, alongside his brothers and adoptive sister, dubbed "The Heralds" — Jacob, John, and Faith Seed. Using both coercion and violence, Eden's Gate under Seed's command forcefully recruits residents of Hope County into its fold, leading to conflict with The Resistance.

Following the nuclear apocalypse, he establishes a new religious group called The New Eden.

He was portrayed by Greg Bryk, who also played in him the live-action short film "Inside Eden's Gate".

His Evil Ranking[]

Debated Validation[]

  • There's evidence to suggest that Joseph himself was behind the bombings that took place in Hope County, in the game's alternate ending.
    • It's established in the game's prologue that the cult has connections within the government, since Joseph tells dispatch to not send any back-up to aid the Deputy, and she responds "Yes Father, praise be to you." So it's not entirely impossible that Joseph, seeing his defeat as an inviability, used his position of authority to exploit rising tensions between the United States and its enemies like Russia and North Korea, which are hinted at (on the in-game radio) to have ongoing conflict during the events of the game's story.
      • This, of course, would make him far more heinous, due to accidentally igniting a nuclear war, resulting in billions of deaths.

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • With the help of his brothers, he established the "Project at Eden's Gate" cult and manipulated hundreds of innocent people into joining through brainwashing.
  • He seized control of the entire Hope County, committing mass murder against those who dared to oppose the cult's beliefs.
  • He brainwashed Rachel Jessop into joining their cult, renaming her Faith Seed then drugging her with the cult's Bliss.
  • He organized and carried out widespread physical and psychological torture of prisoners, taking pleasure in their suffering.
  • He kidnapped Hudson, Pratt, Sheriff Whitehorse, and Marshal Burke when they attempted to arrest him, subjecting them to brutal torture at the hands of his siblings.
    • According to Hudson, she begged him to save her, and he just watched her be tortured without showing any remorse or sympathy.
  • When confronted by the Junior Deputy in the game's climax, he captured their allies, and while he initially offered a peaceful resolution, proposing that the Deputy just walk away with their friends unharmed, he then tried to kill all of them when the Deputy refused.
  • In Far Cry: New Dawn, it's revealed that he tortured and brainwashed the Deputy into becoming The Judge.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Despite his numerous atrocities, he's a well-intentioned extremist and anti-villain who genuinely wanted to make the world a better place by cleansing it of sin and showing people salvation.
    • Additionally, his belief that the world is ending soon and that it's his God-given mission to save people through his cult are also 100% sincere.
  • He is very affable to pretty much everyone, including his devoted followers, family, friends, and even the Deputy, whom he wanted to "save" and still chose to forgive despite them killing his remaining family and dismantling his cult.
  • He is genuinely tragic. According to him, their family broke up for unknown reasons, and his parents frequently abused his brothers John and Jacob. At one point in his life, he was married to a woman named Faith, who was also pregnant with their daughter. After a car accident that resulted in Faith's death, Joseph was handed a pink bundle of tubes that belonged to his daughter, presumably supplying her with oxygen. He then claims that he received an intervention from God, which told him to remove his unborn daughter's tubes, killing her. This would be the start of his declining mental health and religious delusions that led him to becoming the man he is today.
  • He sincerely loved his wife, daughter, brothers, and foster sister. In New Dawn, he also had a son, whom he loved with all his heart.
  • He is extremely sympathetic, as every time the Deputy manages to kill someone he loves, he mourns their deaths, and at one point broke down crying, exclaiming that the Deputy was "the snake in the garden", alluding them to be the Devil.
    • In Far Cry: New Dawn, he begs the protagonist to kill him so he may be "released" from his suffering.
  • Due to his trauma, he suffers from heavy moral agency issues as a result of his religious delusions.
  • He is honorable, as he kept his word to the Deputy and freed their allies if they chose to surrender.
  • In the New Dawn timeline, he partially redeems himself by choosing to live in exile in order to atone for his sins, and also helps the main protagonist in their fight against the Highway Men.
