The Joker is the titular main antagonist of the 2016 animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke.

He is a psychotic, clown-like criminal and the archenemy of Batman, who is bent on proving that anybody can be driven insane simply from one bad day. One day, the Joker shoots Barbara Gordon and decides to prove his theory to her father Jim, whom he abducts and tries to drive into insanity in an abandoned theme park.

He was voiced by Mark Hamill, who also voiced the Halloween Wizard in Regular Show and Chucky in the 2019 Child's Play reboot.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He killed people in a bank robbery.
  • He gassed hundreds of people in a movie theatre with his Joker venom.
  • It's implied that, like other interpretations, he doesn't treat Harley Quinn that well.
  • Beat Jason Todd (presumably to death) with a crowbar.
  • He killed 4 people in a room at once.
  • He kills a carnival owner after purchasing a carnival from him.
  • He shoots and cripples Barbara Gordon. He also strips her naked and takes pictures of her and then shows said pictures to her father, James Gordon, in an attempt to drive him insane.
  • Beats up Batman during the final battle.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has an extremely tragic backstory which involves the following:
    • Initially, he was a chemical engineer but left his job to pursue a career as a comedian. He is unsuccessful, ends up unemployed and this causes so much financial problems for him and his family that they are forced to contend with a landlady who hates him.
    • He had a wife, whom he had a child (still unborn), and he loved them both and wanted to provide for them. At some point he lashed out at his wife due to stress, but then immediately apologized and promised her that they would find a nice apartment to live in.
    • The only reason why he agreed to rob Ace Chemicals with two crooks was because he wanted to ensure that his family would have a better life.
    • Moments before the robbery, he learned that his wife and his unborn child had died due to being electrocuted by a baby bottle heater accident.
    • After he hears the news, he wants to quit the heist, but the two crooks still force him to participate against his will.
    • During the heist, he falls into a vat of chemicals that disintegrate his skin and drive him to insanity. This is the reason why he commits so many crimes in the future. All of these things make him too tragic.
  • When Batman brings up the possibility that maybe the Joker is alone in his madness and not everyone cracks under severe pressure, the Joker widens his eyes for a moment and it's clear that the revelation has affected him.
  • The Joker surrenders and shows regret over his actions, even considering the possibility of redemption. However, he then declines because of the severity of his actions.
  • Batman shows sympathy for the Joker when he hears that he is insane due to a trauma in his past, offers to help him rehabilitate and the two of them even share a long laugh at one of the Joker's jokes.
  • Given his incident with the chemical bath, the Joker can be considered amoral and villain by proxy given that the deformations from this accident have driven him to insanity and a disconnection from reality.
  • He can also be considered a scapegoat, for despite his heinous actions, he was filled with remorse in a moment of lucidity and visibly wanted to redeem himself. However, his conscience didn't allow it with him considering himself a hopeless case and that it's already too late for him to change.

Trivia[]

  • This version of the Joker is the only Mark Hamill version of the Joker to be Inconsistently Heinous.
  • Although he is Inconsistently Heinous his Original Counterpart is Pure Evil due to being much less tragic having a clear moral agency and not being a scapegoat at all.
