Peace?! I built this community in the middle of nowhere so we would be left in peace! Yet, S.H.I.E.L.D. found us. No matter where we go or what we do, they will hunt us down. If we are to survive, S.H.I.E.L.D. must be destroyed.
~ Jiaying revealing her true colors to her daughter Skye.

Jiaying (in Mandarin: 佳穎) is the secondary antagonist of the TV series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

She is the leader of the Inhumans from the Afterlife, Daisy "Skye" Johnson's biological mother and Calvin L. Johnson's estranged ex-wife. Her abilities include regeneration and semi-immortality, but it requires for her to drain the life-force from other people. Due to her traumatic experience with Whitehall, she goes on a vendetta to wipe out humans and install the Inhumans as the dominant species. She is also later revealed to be Kora's mother, Daisy's older half-sister.

She was portrayed by Dichen Lachman.

Roles[]

She serves as an unseen antagonist in Season 1, one of the two main antagonists (alongside Daniel Whitehall) of Season 2, one of the two posthumous overarching antagonists (alongside John Garrett) of Season 3, a posthumous antagonist in Season 5 and a minor character in Season 7.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • When Calvin Johnson rescued her from Whitehall, she forced him to massacre multiple villages so she could take their life force. While it was off-screen, one of the victims Linda Avery's death gave her colleague Richard Lumley PTSD.
  • She commands Gordon to psychologically torture her husband Cal just to keep him quiet, whether these are her own orders or not it’s more likely they are.
  • She tried to have her husband sent away and while Cal is Ax-Crazy while also realizing he’s been ditched, his reaction would likely involve the deaths or injuries of any onlookers. Even though Skye raises this point to her, she snaps at her saying she doesn’t care about the people as they are not inhuman.
  • Due to her actions of sending Cal away and letting Skye spend some time with him before he goes leading to Lincoln watching Cal making sure doesn’t hurt Skye he ends up getting captured by Hydra. She even tells Skye, Gordon, and Raina they are forbidden from saving him leaving him to his fate.
  • When SHIELD arrives in the afterlife leading to Robert Gonzales reasoning with her and gives her an heirloom that was stolen from her years back by Daniel Whitehall and proposes a truce and that her people will need to register as they’ll need to have a record in case one of them turns out to be evil and commits a crime, instead of appreciating that SHIELD wants peace, not war, kills Gonzales and accuses him before accusing him for comparing their scars.
  • After she murdered Gonzales, she orders Gordon to hijack a Shield aircraft to open fire on HER OWN people to make it seem like SHIELD is committing an act of war.
  • She also shoots herself in the shoulder to make it seem like Gonzales shot her and that he was killed in self-defense.
  • When Raina has visions of what Jiaying will do if she meets Shield in the future, she manipulates everyone into believing that Raina is attempting a coup against her. This leads her to get locked up and eventually, executes Raina painfully leading to Skye realizing her plans.
  • She is a massive hypocrite as she tries to tries to convince Skye what she is doing is right for her people and yet ordered an attacked on them to make S.H.I.E.L.D. the enemy and start a war. When Skye did not listen, she knocks her out and locks her up.
  • She and Gordon lead a group of Inhumans to take the bridge of a shield base. She plans to use the terrigen mist to kill everyone who isn’t inhuman and turn those who are.
  • She executes several unarmed agents in cold blood when they refuse to call their allies in.
  • She attempts to load the terrigen mist onto a Rocket and effectively wipe out the entire human race so there are only Inhumans left which would kill billions of people in the process.
  • When Skye escapes, she attempts to drain her life force and kill her despite having clear regret of doing this and nearly succeeds in doing so before Cal kills her.
  • Her actions lead to many people becoming Inhumans after her death since the terrigen crystals ended up being surrounded in the ecosystem. It also leads to Cal erasing all his memories and starting a new life as a veterinarian named Doctor Winslow.
  • Even though her death is played for sympathy, Jiaying totally deserved to die due to all her actions against humanity as well as murdering many people.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She is way too tragic to even be considered NPE as it is played with mass sympathy. She was tortured by Whitehall in the most gruesome way (leading to the 14+ rating which was originally PG) just for her powers before throwing her remains like trash. This also causes Cal to become crazy before rebuilding her, but as he says to Phil Coulson Jiaying had a good heart, It was just ripped out. This also makes Whitehall the one responsible for her villainy.
  • She does care for other Inhumans such as her husband Cal and daughter Daisy.
  • The reason she created the After-Life was to help many Inhumans find peace.
  • In season 7, after the S.H.I.E.L.D team travels back and came across her before being tortured by Whitehall when she finds out what she does in the future she was truly horrified at what she does and dies protecting Daisy from Nathaniel Malik.
