I know everyone in the Four Nations who could possibly help you! I put out the message, and every law-man, every sage, every official will be tripping over their own feet to hunt you down on my behalf! Being the Avatar will not protect her from me!
~ Jianzhu's warning to Kyoshi and Kelsang.

Jianzhu is the main antagonist of the Avatar Kyoshi series, serving as the main antagonist of The Rise of Kyoshi and the posthumous overarching antagonist of The Shadow of Kyoshi.

He serves as the earthbending teacher and father figure to Yun, who was falsely identified as the Avatar, and arch-nemesis of Kyoshi, the true Avatar.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He tortured a group of Yellow Necks rebels to death before promising the remaining nonbenders their freedom if they could dig a hole deep enough to hide in by sunset while failure would mean certain death. Jianzhu took twisted pleasure in observing as the desperate Yellow Necks dug and killed each other for shovels. When night broke, however, he reneged on his promise and used his own bending to bury the 5,000 Yellow Necks who had managed to dig deep enough alive while he allowed the remaining members to leave. Even if they did deserve it for the bloody massacre they committed, the high level of sadism he took and the twisted method was still pretty unforgivable.
  • He was a very brutal and abusive teacher towards Yun, and only used him as a tool. The abuse will later turn Yun to a bloodthirsty monster when he sacrifices him to Father Glowworm when he tells him that it was Kyoshi who was the Avatar.
  • He took Kyoshi and Yun to the vengeful and dangerous spirit Father Glowworm, and allowed him to torture them, just so that he could identify the Avatar,
  • He killed his former friend Kelsang, by slicing a tiny rock through his neck
  • He has killed multiple people, often in brutal ways, including the outlaw Guan, and the warrior Saiful
  • He committed mass-poisoning during a meeting with the earth sages, killing all the sages, as well as some servants, and badly injuring Hei-Ran.
  • He accidentally killed Lek, but doesn't have any remorse for it.
  • He threatened Kyoshi to collapse a tea building, which will have killed a lot of people.
  • Ultimately, despite the franchise's high Heinous Standards, Jianzhu still stands out with his high onscreen kill count, killing much more outright onscreen, or on-page, than every other villain in the franchise, and that too his actions have displayed in a very scummy and personally cruel light to an extent no other villain has actually managed to meet.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He was a well-intentioned extremist, wanting to create balance in the world, and believing his brutal ways was the only way to achieve it.
  • He has felt strong remorse twice for murdering Kelsang and poisoning Hei-Ran.
  • Ultimately is motivated by a loyalty towards his old friend, Avatar Kuruk, feeling he greatly disappointed him that caused his early death and wanted to make up for it.
