~ Jack O'Lantern after making a "head'" quip to Grim. |
Jack O'Lantern is the main antagonist of "Billy & Mandy's Jacked-Up Halloween", the Halloween special and last episode of Grim & Evil.
He is a professional trickster from the Medieval times who made a deal with the Grim Reaper to become immortal and prank people for all eternity. However, as punishment for his tricky nature, Jack was beheaded by an enraged Grim, forcing him to take a pumpkin as head and seclude himself in his house for several years to the point of only being able to come out during Halloween night.
He was voiced by Wayne Knight.
His Evil Ranking[]
Debatable Validations[]
- As seen in "The Incredible Shrinking Mandy", when Billy accidentally beheads Grim with his own Scythe, Grim is able to put his back, despite how Jack claimed that if he behaved Grim with the Scythe, his head would stay off forever, while may have been a continuity error out-of-universe, could also be an indication that Jack's threat was ultimately ill-founded. However, even if this is the case, this doesn't diminish the severity of such a threat as Jack was sure he would decapitate Grim for good and Grim likely counted on that as he was scared.
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Even though he initally didn't mean any harm, when his pranks started to become more harmful after his decapitation; many of Jack's pranks to the population of Endsville back in the medieval 16/17th century were sometimes dangerous, painful or demeaning, such as changing a road signal that caused a traveler to fall off a cliff, opening doors without check if they were people behind, putting "kick me" signs on people's behinds, and even stepping on a pair of decorative antlers to make them prick someone's butt.
- At some point during this montage, Jack left a fart cushion on a tomb so when the coffin of a deceased person was lowered into it, it made the cushion sound and all the attendees of the funeral laughed at that, which is a total offense for whoever was having their funeral.
- Ignored the Grim Reaper when he came after his soul following his execution at the hands of a knight of Endsville's queen, closing the door on him and resuming his pranking work as if anything had happened.
- Tickled Grim when he keeps insisting on reaping his soul, taking his Scythe from him, and blackmailing him into granting him immortality so he could prank people for all eternity, a deal that Grim reluctantly accepted, but didn't leave before spitefully beheading Jack for besting him, essentially condemning him to a headless eternal life.
- Comes out from his house every Halloween night to prank all of Endsville's population for years, which according to Grim, was the beginning of the tricking schtick in the trick-or-treat system on Halloween, which makes Jack indirectly responsible for any kind of vandalism pulled by any trick-or-treaters.
- Shoves a skunk on Billy's bag when he stupidly comes to his house for trick-or-treat, leading the skunk to spray Billy and make him feel uncomfortable.
- Tricks Billy into giving him Grim's Scythe to him once Billy foolishly informs him about the Scythe being the real deal.
- Summons several spirits of the Underworld and makes them possess the pumpkins of a cemetery to form an army which he would employ to take over the world and make Halloween last forever by blocking the sun, forcing people to stay inside their homes like he was forced to do and then conquering the universe.
- Although one can dismiss this as Fridge Horror, it doesn't, as no trick-or-treaters other than Billy, Mandy, Grim, and Irwin are seen for the rest of the episode and Mandy herself cynically points out that Billy has caused the end of the world once again even if no one is confirmed to have died.
- Has his pumpkins destroy Endsville, leaving several buildings and streets burning and crushing some cars with a giant Four-Legged Pumpkin. Specifically, in Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure, it's confirmed that Jack's forces wrecked half of Endsville.
- Has the Four-Legged Pumpkin suck Grim into kidnapping him and has him taken to the cemetery, where he announces his intentions to behead Grim to have his revenge for what Grim did to his human head, aware that if he does so, Grim's head will stay off forever and no longer be removable as well as that by getting rid of the Grim Reaper, he would create a deathless world. Although Grim shouldn't have beheaded him out of pettiness beforehand, Jack doesn't recognize that he did provoke Grim into doing that.
- Tries to torture Billy and Mandy himself before Irwin arrives and falls for all of Mandy's pranks, leading Jack and his henchmen to all laugh to death.
- Keeps pestering people even after dying, shooting some rocks at the Underworld's demonic inhabitants, which eventually leads them to smash his pumpkin head offscreen as he continually laughs at them.
- His actions indirectly threaten Grim's job a year later when the Boogey Man has Grim taken to trial over his failure at reaping General Skarr's soul, which starts a chain of events that had the potential of making Boogey Man take over the world with the Left Hand of Horror.
- Despite the high Heinous Standards of the franchise, with other villains such as Mandy herself endangering the world every often, Jack considerably lacks resources other than his pranking kit and Grim's Scythe after stealing it.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While he is taken as a threat in-universe, he has several moments of being played up for laughs and not being taken seriously, such as the moment he made a couple of corny "head" puns/idioms at Grim's expense. Considering that he is both mischievous and a character from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, a black comedy cartoon with negative continuity where nothing is taken seriously, thus making him far too comedic and humorous to be PE or NPE.
- He has a somewhat sympathetic and tragic backstory. Despite how mean-spirited his pranks could be, Jack was a genuinely pleasant guy who just loved being a harmless prankster and didn't know when to stop with the pranks in the town. The townsfolk, while understandably angry at his pranks, went too far by engineering a scenario for the Queen to order his execution instead of getting back at him by pranking him back, for example.
- If one thinks about it, Jack isn't exactly unjustified in seeking to settle his score against the Grim Reaper: just for tickling him off with his tricks, Jack got beheaded by Grim out of pure spite just because he didn't like to be bested.
- He can be considered a scapegoat, as his fate of being sent to the Underworld and annoying some demons due to never learning when to stop only to get his pumpkin head squashed in return can be essentially considered one worse than death, as Jack is still immortal thanks to his deal with Grim, but now will no longer have a head.
