~ The Idea of Evil |
The Idea of Evil, also known as God of the Abyss, is the overarching antagonist of the Berserk franchise.
It is a ancient and conceptual entity which resides in the deepest part of the Astral World, the Abyss, where this realm merges with the World of Idea. It weaves a complex web of causality, born from humanity's quest for understanding in the face of suffering. It is responsible for the events from the universe, dictating the fate of humanity through its application of causality and acting to the collective unconscious desires of the species.
It is also the mastermind behind the creation of the five God Hand and the apostles, who carry out its will with the directive "DO AS THOU WILT". By selecting Griffith as the fifth God Hand, it acknowledged its manipulation of events in his ancestry and life to lead him to become Femto.
Its Evil Ranking[]
What Makes It Heinous?[]
- Since humanity first came into existence and gave birth to it, the Idea of Evil has weaved human history and been responsible for creating all the war, pain, and suffering of the human race.
- It created the God Hand, who enact the will of the Idea of Evil by turning people into Apostles, making it indirectly responsible for all the deaths of those who were sacrificed by the God Hand members and the Apostles, as well as all of the innocent people devoured, raped and killed by the Apostles after their transformation.
- It is responsible for creating all of the circumstances and events that would lead Griffith to the Eclipse, making it one of the largest culprits in the Band of the Hawk being devoured by Apostles, Griffith becoming Femto, and all of the pain Guts has endured since the Eclipse.
- When Griffith asks the Idea of Evil what it wants from him, it merely tells Griffith to do whatever he wants and that he is the chosen one who will decide the destiny of mankind, only further fueling Griffith's ego and leading him down an even darker path.
What Makes It Inconsistent?[]
- The Idea of Evil was born from the collective conscious of humanity and only came into existence because humans wanted reasons for their sadness, pain, life and death. As its name suggests, it exists as a means to explain those reasons and only creates suffering because humanity desires it, meaning it is blatantly Made of Evil and therefore has no moral agency or real ability to act for itself, only existing to follow the will of mankind. In other words, it cannot really be fully blamed for causing everything in the story, since all the members of the God Hand willingly chose to sacrifice and become what they are now.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, despite being the master of the God Hand, the Idea of Evil is Inconsistently Heinous, while all the current members are Pure Evil due to possessing clear moral agency. Another fact that is ironic is how The Idea of Evil is the only God Hand member that is not debased in any way, making the entity evil by definitive purity.
- The Idea of Evil is currently the only Berserk villain to be approved as Inconsistently Heinous.
- Chapter 83, the manga chapter where Griffith meets the Idea of Evil, was pulled from the Tankōbon format because Miura believed the introduction of a god would limit the range of the story, which could potentially disqualify the Idea of Evil as Inconsistently Heinous due to lack of screen time and role in the story. However, the canonicity of the chapter has never been denied, and the Idea of Evil was still physically seen in Chapter 82, which confirms that it at least exists. What's more, other references have been made to its existence and its power over the God Hand, as Flora mentions in Chapter 202 that the God Hand are the "executors of the will of something lurking in the distant Abyss." Therefore, this suffices as enough evidence for the Idea of Evil's existence and role in the story and makes it qualified to be Inconsistently Heinous.
