Heheheh. Go on and scream, if it makes you feel better. But if you could die swiftly and without struggle, I would greatly appreciate it.
~ Hubert's sadism and coldhearted efficieny.

Hubert von Vestra is a major character of the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its 2022 spin-off sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

As Minister of the Imperial Household and Marquis of Vestra, his authority within the Adrestian Empire is second only to Empress Edelgard and he is the brains behind the Empire's campaign and actions. Exceptionally cunning and cold, even in the Crimson Flower and Scarlet Blaze routes where he is one of the heroes he nonetheless remains an extremely apathetic high functioning sociopath who has no qualms or hesitations in dealing with Edelgard's enemies in the most brutally efficient manners possible. In all routes where he is a villain, this is dialed even further, with the score of war crimes he commits or abets in having no hindrance on his conscience whatsoever.

In Three Houses, he is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Cleobulus) in the Azure Moon route and a major antagonist in both the Verdant Wind and Silver Snow routes. In Three Hopes, he is one of the secondary antagonists in the Azure Gleam route and a major antagonist for the first half of the Golden Wildfire route.

He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Robbie Daymond in English, who also voices Goro Akechi in Persona 5 and Chrollo Lucilfer in Hunter x Hunter.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

General / Shared Across Multiple Routes[]

  • While not individually as heinous as the likes of Edelgard, Hubert can be considered one of Edelgard's resources, and he stands out for many of the things he does outside of her orders and/or behind her back, having committed countless assassinations and tortures to eliminate threats to her reign and dissent within the Empire.
  • On every route, he assists Edelgard in waging her war on the Church of Seiros, leading to countless deaths and suffering while plotting and planning Edelgard's attacks. With his tactical role in the war effort, one can argue he is a large part of why Edelgard gets as far as she does.
  • Works with Those Who Slither in the Dark, participating in numerous deaths and terrorizations, and is complicit in their experiments using Crest Stones to turn humans into Demonic Beasts. He even ensures that any information about the experiments and other nefarious activities is suppressed.
  • In his supports with Byleth, he repeatedly threatens their life should they prove a threat to Edelgard.
  • He is cold and condescending even to most of his fellow classmates and allies, especially Ferdinand.
  • In all routes, Hubert carries out the removal of the corrupt nobles from Adrestia's government, personally and gleefully seeing to his own father's execution (Although they did deserve it for their horrible actions).

Fire Emblem: Three Houses[]

The White Clouds Route[]

  • Helps orchestrate the coup against the Church of Seiros and the Adrestian Empire's leadership.
  • Orders the execution of Western Church priests who oppose Edelgard's reforms.
  • Hubert is involved in the plan to burn down the Western Church to eliminate dissent.
  • Plays a role in the assassination of Duke Aegir to remove opposition within the Empire.
  • Assists in the plot to eliminate Lord Arundel, who is secretly Thales, a leader of Those Who Slither in the Dark.
  • Helps plan the ambush on Rhea during the assault on Garreg Mach Monastery.
  • He is involved in the destruction and occupation of Garreg Mach Monastery.
  • Orders the execution of captured Knights of Seiros to prevent their resistance.
  • Oversees the torture of captives to extract information and intimidate others.
  • Indirectly supports the massacre at Remire Village, where villagers are turned into demonic beasts and slaughtered.

The Azure Moon Route[]

  • Incites violence and unrest in the Kingdom of Faerghus to weaken Dimitri's rule.
  • Makes multiple attempts on Dimitri's life throughout the war.
  • Orders the destruction of supply lines and resources crucial to Faerghus's war effort.
  • He is involved in the assassination of Rodrigue, a key ally of Dimitri.
  • Participates in the killing of survivors from Duscur to cover up the involvement of the Empire in the Tragedy of Duscur.
  • Orchestrates the attack on Derdriu, the capital of the Leicester Alliance in order to crush it's strength and eliminate Lord Arundel .

The Verdant Wind / Silver Snow Route[]

  • Leads the attack on Garreg Mach Monastery, resulting in numerous deaths.
  • Commands the Adrestian forces during the attack on Brigid, in order to kill Petra and force her grandfather to aid Edelgard
  • Takes part in the Battle at Gronder which resulted in many deaths, most notably Dimitri's.
  • Fights the Leicester army on the streets of Enbarr

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[]

The Scarlet Blaze Route[]
  • Assists Edelgard in overthrowing the Church of Seiros and the Adrestian Empire's leadership.
  • Uses his skills in dark magic and assassination to eliminate key political rivals and enemies of Edelgard.
  • Poisons Judith, an ally of the Leicester Alliance, leading to her death.
  • Plays a key role in the successful attack on Garreg Mach Monastery, leading to many deaths of innocents.
  • Uses blackmail and coercion to force various nobles into supporting Edelgard's cause.
  • Spreads false information and propaganda to control public perception and incite violence against the Church.
  • Uses the threat of military action against Petra's homeland to ensure her loyalty to the Empire.
  • Targets and eliminates Church loyalists within the Adrestian Empire.
The Golden Wildfire Route[]
  • Orchestrates ambushes against Claude, causing significant casualties among the Leicester Alliance forces.
  • Makes several assassination attempts on Claude during the conflict.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • The biggest reason he cannot be Near Pure Evil is because in routes outside of Crimson Flower, once he is defeated, his last act is to give the heroes the information they need to defeat Those Who Slither in the Dark, his reasons being completely moral and born out of his standards.
  • He is shown to care about his fellow Black Eagles in instances where they are on his team (the Crimson Flower and Scarlet Blaze routes specifically), and in the Crimson Flower route, he is capable of falling in love with Byleth, Petra, Bernadetta or Shamir if he gets an ending with them, and develops a genuine respect and gratitude for Shez if he is given the Merc Whistle in Three Hopes.
    • His relationship with Ferdinand is given a lot of focus in general. Their supports end with them forming a friendship based on a mutual understanding and respect, and in their shared ending, their bond is said to make Edelgard jealous. When fighting Ferdinand in routes outside the Crimson Flower route, Hubert states that running into him again is "almost sentimental", and their conversation is relatively non-hostile. In the Golden Wildfire route, when Ferdinand is trapped behind enemy lines, Hubert spends his own personal funds to hire mercenaries to save him.
  • He's extremely loyal to Edelgard, shown to be protective for her no matter what. From a young age, Hubert dedicates himself to serving Edelgard, committing his life to supporting her ambitions and protecting her at all costs. He carries out Edelgard’s orders without question, even when they involve morally questionable actions. Hubert is responsible for Edelgard’s personal security, constantly vigilant for threats and taking preemptive measures to eliminate them.
  • Despite his disdain for Those Who Slither in the Dark, Hubert collaborates with them when necessary, recognizing that their power can be leveraged to support Edelgard’s goals. That being said, Hubert definitely has standards, loathing their cruelty and working towards their defeat in just about every route.
  • In Three Hopes, he reveals that he has a good relationship with his family, save for his father. Though Three Houses does not mention them, he has a living mother in addition to a younger sister and brother, and he purposely hides their existence to protect them from any threats against him.
  • He has Pet the Dog moments in some of his supports:
    • With Petra, where he sympathises with her hostage situation and her homesickness. While he considers it a necessary evil, he still nonetheless laments the unfortunate situation she has been put in.
    • With Bernadetta, where he goes out of his way to avoid frightening her after learning that she's intimidated by him.
    • With Lysithea in Three Hopes, where he spends their A-Support doting on her and treating her with uncharacteristic kindness because he has a sister her age who she reminds him of. Additionally, in Ferdinand's supports with Lysithea, he is revealed to be working on a cure for her condition.
    • With Byleth in both games: outside of his supports, he summons Byleth to a private meeting to tell them about his alliance with Those Who Slither in Dark because he knows that the organization is behind the death of Byleth's father and assures the Ashen Demon that Thales' army will be dealt after the war. In Three Houses he tells Byleth that he would gladly serves them he had a second life and reluctantly acknowledges that Byleth has become a powerful ally despite being a former enemy if you recruit them in Three Hopes.
    • With Hapi, when they bond over their love for coffee in Three Hopes. It's worth to mention that both boss fights with Hubert in Three Hopes involve facing Hapi too.
