Hiroshi Sato is a major antagonist in Book One: Air and a supporting character in Book Four: Balance of Nickelodeon animated series The Legend of Korra.
He is Asami's father and Amon's third-in-command. He is a non-bending, barrel-chested businessman with a big personality. His family lineage extends back to the first Fire Nation colonists. His idea for the Satomobiles caused him to become the captain of industry in his era. During a police search of his secret factory, he revealed himself to be an Equalist, creating high-tech weaponry to fight against benders. Initially a tragic and well-meaning anti-villain, he eventually becomes more ruthless in his crusade against benders, devolving into little more than a petty hypocrite.
He was voiced by Daniel Dae Kim.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- After his wife's death, he joined in the Equalists scheme in order to enact a campaign of cultural genocide. His support and the resources he has given to Amon is the very reason Amon is able to go as far as he did.
- He has the Fire Ferrets fight in the pro-bending arena so the Equalists can attack the arena and everyone there to threaten all non-benders in Republic City.
- In order to ensure the success of the Equalist campaign, he mass produces all the weapons they needed, electric shockers that stun people, mecha suits to threaten everyone, airships, and bombs, all of which threaten lives en-masse for the campaign against benders.
- He framed Lau Gan-Lan by taking the blame for his alliance with the Equalists, which caused the Cabbage Corp to be closed down.
- He lied to Korra, Tenzin, Chief Beifong and the others that he's ready for the new line of Satomobile when they're suspecting him of working with the Equalists.
- He and the Equalists trapped Korra, Tenzin, Chief Beifong and the Metalbending Police Force at the secret factory so they could attack them and bring them to the Equalists. He later tried to stop Mako and Bolin from rescuing Korra, Tenzin and Chief Beifong.
- He frequently tries to corrupt his daughter Asami into hating benders like him and joining the Equalists, only for her to turn against him and side with Korra and the others.
- Alongside Amon, he led the Equalists in attacking Republic City, including attacking the United Nations.
- Upon capturing Asami, Bolin and General Iroh, Hiroshi taunts General Iroh by revealing he's the one who intercepted his message to Commander Bumi and attempts to murder Asami for fighting for the benders rather than joining the Equalists.
- His alliance with the Equalists tainted Future Industries and the Sato family's reputation, causing the former to almost become bankrupt and Asami having to find a way to prevent this from happening, which Varrick later took it over for war-profiteering.
- As it is revealed in Turf Wars, he developed nerve gas canisters, intending to unleash it onto benders to horrifically poison them to death. It makes him indirectly responsible for Tokuga attempt to unleash the poison gases around Republic City.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is extremely tragic as his general hatred of benders stems from when firebenders raided his home and used their powers to murder his wife in cold blood, leading him to believe the world is better without benders existing.
- He genuinely loved his wife, as she was the reason why he fell into villainy, and all of his motivations involve trying to avenge her.
- He genuinely loves Asami, having genuinely wanted her to join, and clearly regrets trying to kill her, in which his time in prison has him see just how badly his actions tarnished his family name and how it affected Asami's career and credibility when having to take over, and wants to make an attempt to reconcile with Asami, or at least apologize.
- Having regretted all the crimes he caused, Sato redeems himself. He apologizes to Asami and assists to stop Kuvira's invasion of the United Republic, crucially sacrificing his life to create an entry point into Kuvira's Colossus whilst (safely) ejecting Asami out of her seat so that she does not die in the process.
- His death is played for sympathy, having sacrificed himself to stop Kuvira and out of love for Asami.
