“ | All of this exists because of me. If I don't innovate, somebody else will. | „ |
~ Henry Wu to Simon Masrani. |
“ | You are acting as if we're engaged in some kind of mad science, but we are doing what we have done from the beginning. Nothing in Jurassic World is natural! We have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals, and if our genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different, but you didn't ask for reality; you asked for more teeth. | „ |
~ Henry Wu to Simon Masrani about the Indominus rex. |
Dr. Henry Wu is the secondary antagonist of Universal Pictures' Jurassic Park franchise.
He was the chief geneticist of InGen and a former employee of John Hammond who managed to clone back the dinosaurs for InGen's amusement park Jurassic Park, making him responsible for the park's dinosaurs in the first place. Following the Jurassic Park disaster and Hammond's death, however, Wu goes to work at Jurassic Park's sucessor Jurassic World and creates many genetic hybrids there, among them the Indominus rex, before going to participate in several illegal endeavours involving Vic Hoskins, Eli Mills, and Lewis Dodgson.
He was portrayed by BD Wong.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
Jurassic Park trilogy[]
- Even before becoming a villain, Henry Wu was the one who came up with how to clone dinosaurs back for Jurassic Park by filling the missing parts of a dinosaur's genome with with DNA from amphibian species like the Common reed frog (Hyperolius viridiflavus), which led the dinosaurs to multiply without control as while all Jurassic Park dinosaurs were female, the frog DNA made them change sex to male occasionally, resulting in the dinosaurs uncontrollably breeding and claiming some lives thanks to Dennis Nedry's meddling.
- He is somewhat aware of the damage his dinosaurs caused, smugly grinning at Dr. Ian Malcolm when he voiced his concerns to dismiss them.
- Responsible for all the creations of the dinosaurs, which led to multiple outbreaks and causing various casualties. This is considered a crime against humanity, although unexpected.
- Possibly had a hand in the creation of the Spinosaurus, the Ankylosaurus, the Ceratosaurus, and the Corythosaurus in Isla Sorna, leaving all of them to grow there in secret after the island's abandonment and leading to the events of Jurassic Park III, what even ending when some of his creation's pterosaurs managed to fly to the mainland.
Between the Jurassic Park and the Jurassic World trilogies[]
- Keeps experimenting on dinosaurs for Masrani Global CEO Simon Masrani's Jurassic World until he is able to create hybrid dinosaurs.
- Makes deals with Vic Hoskins and Eli Mills respectively behind Masrani's back, resulting the creations of the Indominus rex to be used for military purposes and the Scorpios rex to be used for the illegal activies beneath Lockwood Manor. In regards to the latter, both Mills and Masrani (whom Wu tried to offer as a dinosaur to display at Jurassic World) rejected it for being so unpredictable.
- violated Simon Masrani's order instead of destroying him like Masrani ordered, Wu kept him by freezing him even though the Scorpios nearly fatally poisoned him, resulting in that mutated dinosaurs asexually reproducing and if they hadn't died after being freed they would have destroyed all life on the island (although Wu thought freezing it was enough).
- On doing so, he proves that he has no loyalty to Ingen, an organization he has that he was his chief geneticist from the first moment with the help of Hammond and it is not clear if he was even loyal to Hammond.
Jurassic World[]
- His act of keeping the Indominus rex for Hoskins to sell her to the American military leads to chaos and death once she breaks out from her cell, leading Jurassic World to be closed down forever. It's even worse when he created at least two individuals, although one of them was eaten by his sister.
- Rejects Simon Masrani's accusations Even blames him back for asking him to create "a monster" when his boss confronts him for the, according to Wu, "unfortunate" victims the Indominus claimed.
- He also admits that nothing natural in Jurassic Park was created solely for the enjoyment of visitors (his creations are animals).
- He leaves the park in a helicopter with one of Hoskins' men, after it assures him that the deal is kept, leaving him to deal with "some lawyers" (though Hoskins is actually get killed).
- Before he escapes, he takes more hybrid eggs (probably the Indoraptor's) with him from his lab, to tie up loose ends and possibly bring them for Mills.
- This did not happen, but in the laboratory room were found Wu's plans for the establishment of additional hybrids that Hoskins confirms will be even more successful than the Indominus.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous[]
- In the series it seems that he also creates animals from the Cenozoic (like a mammoth and a sabertooth) that should not exist alongside dinosaurs at all, which further proves how much he doesn't care about of his works's ecological damage, as also to the fact that the sabertooth almost kill the Nublar Six.
- Thinks about throwing an Ankylosaurus later named Bumpy due to being breed with asymmetrical spikes.
- He is shown to be proud as he only interviews Brooklyn after she flatters him and tells him about her follower count.
- When Brooklyn walks into his room and sees his doubtful plans he has her group kicked out of the lab, although it's understandable since she trespassed.
- Leaves behind his henchman Eddie at Isla Nublar while it's his birthday no less, leading Eddie to be devoured alive by the Indominus as he tries to escape from Jurassic World.
- Goes back to Isla Nublar accompanied by Eli's mercenaries, including Hawkes, so he can retrieve a sample of the now deceased Indominus rex and his personal laptop with all his research that Mills can use to create far more deadly hybrids, coming across the Nublar Six in the process.
- Despite the mercenaries assisting him, Wu doesn't even lend them a hand when they drag a big trunk out of their way and threatens that if they don't cooperate with him, Mills will have their "heads on a plate".
- Captures Brooklyn with Hawkes and the mercenaries and threatens her to tell her friends to give him back his laptop.
- Although Brooklyn warns him about the damage of the Scorpion Rex, he still demands to make more hybrids.
- Abandons the Nublar Six behind after retrieving an Indominus sample because Ben and Bumpy got his laptop destroyed, leaving the six youngsters behind despite them having no ways to return to the land and further endangering them even if he didn't let Hawkis shoot them dead. In the long run, this leads the Nublar Six to navigate to the Mantah Corp Island, where they are threatened by the devious Kash D. Langford and his boss Daniel Kon.
- While Wu showed more standards compared to Mills' men it did not make him stop cooperating with them. He also showed joy when the Indonymus samples arrived, even though three of Mills' men were killed for it.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[]
- Creates the Indoraptor for Eli Mills to sell for military objectives, letting Mills to put the Indoraptor in a cage where he's mistreated and lives through difficult conditions, making him go on a rampage once he escapes from Lockwood Manor and nearly endangers everyone from California's streets.
- It's very possible that Wu's prototype creation look weak and sickly as its yellow sides show as result of the way it was created.
- Participates in the auction Mills and his men held up at Lockwood Manor to sell the dinosaurs Wu has created, not caring that they may be sold to face hard lives under the ownership of criminals or become killing machines.
- Though he opposes the auctioneers selling the Indoraptor to their clients, going as far as to warn Gunnar Eversol to stop auctioning it, it's because he's a prototype and the competitors should be given more economic options rather than concern for what the Indoraptor may do in the wrong hands.
- Despite the recent criticism and his understanding of Mills' personality, he continued to help him prepare a more developed Indoraptor.
- Threatens Dr. Zia Rodriguez to cooperate with him to get blood samples from Blue before Franklin Webb comes to her rescue and knocks Wu out.
Jurassic World Dominion[]
- Joins Biosyn, the company who hired Dennis Nedry to engineer Jurassic Park's downfall in the first place decades ago, and works for Lewis Dodgson at the Biosyn Research Facility by creating more dinosaurs which Dodgson can use to cover his tracks.
- Creates enormous mutant locusts to sabotage the global crop industry by eating crops across the globe so Biosyn can take over the industry, though if the locusts get out of control, they potentially can cause a global famine that would endanger all of humanity.
- Asking to bring Maisie Lockwood and Beta to the Biosyn Sanctuary, as Dodgson planned to hurt them for locust genetic breeding studies. However, he did not intend for them to be kidnapped and his goal was also to try to prevent the locust disaster.
- When he came to Owen Grady's team he identified by Malcolm as: "its always him". Malcolm saw Wu only in the first film (before twenty nine years from this point), shows that even years later he is a participant in the same damages and crimes throughout the films.
- While he does redeem himself, his creations at the end of the day were responsible for most deaths throughout the franchise, plus he isn't aptly punished for all his misdeeds even though he deserved more than merely losing his credentials.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too polite to others to be an NPE. as he treats others nicely even to his rivals, Respects John Hammond, offers tea to his boss Masrani, makes sure to address Malcolm's issues about his work (though he wasn't concerned about his concerns) and despite the cynical tone of things seems genuinely sorry for the people's deaths from the Indominus.
- He also show a little admiration to Owen, as without reason he watched on his computer Owen's taming of young raptors.
- He may have cared greatly for the Lockwood girls, going as far as to credit Charlotte Lockwood for his discovery and trying to keep Maisie from getting hurt by Dodgson.
- Does have a few standards, as he was against both Hawkes and Dodgson endangering the Nublar Six or Maisie Lockwood, even going as far to spare or save them.
- He also tried save one of Hawk 's men who drowns in the river, but failed. In addition, he seems to care that his animals have pure blood, albeit in a somewhat hypocritical and shaky way, but it seems that this is the main reason he stopped making more hybrids after the sale of the Indoraptor.
- Ends up redeeming himself and also confesses on his guilt to Alan Grant and his men so he can start fixing the damage that the locusts caused, saving the world and humanity from potentially going extinct.
Trivia[]
- His Jurassic Park: Redemption version doesn't count as Inconsistently Heinous as it only treats the Jurassic Park trilogy as canon due, which means Wu is just one of John Hammond's well-intentioned employees without any malice, goes to assist Tim Murphy on his attempts to reopen Jurassic Park to honor his grandfather and gets killed by a Gracilisuchus released by Lewis Dodgson under Peter Ludlow's orders to sabotage Tim's project.
