Gabriel Agreste, also known by his supervillain identity Hawk Moth, is the main antagonist of the 2023 animated musical superhero film Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie. Like his original TV show counterpart, he is a fashion designer who is the father of Adrien Agreste, and he wants to get his hands on the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculous so he can use them to make a wish to revive his late wife Emilie Agreste.

To do so, he uses the Butterfly Miraculus to transform any civillians who are feeling negative emotions into supervillains and sends them to defeat Ladybug and Cat Noir, in hopes of getting their Miraculous. However, when he finds out the latter superhero is his son Adrien, he begins to regret what he has done and eventually redeems himself as he turns himself in.

Like his original version, he is voiced by Antoine Tomé in French and by Keith Silverstein in the English dub.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • When he equips the Butterfly Miraculous for the first time, he states he is fine with burning the world to the ground and lose himself in the process in order to get the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous.
  • He akumatizes a man named Raymond after his heart was broken due to the woman he proposed to rejecting him, turning him into the Gargoyle who would wreck havoc in Paris.
  • He akumatized two criminals who rob a bank and cause chaos at a local fair.
  • After this, Hawk Moth constantly sent out a barrage of akumatized villains in order to stop the heroes.
  • After Adrien snaps at him for being a neglectful father, he would akumatize himself, giving him the power to spread his akumas all over Paris and cause complete destruction across the city, endangering a lot of innocent lives in the process.
  • He defeated and nearly killed Ladybug and Cat Noir, who are both teenagers.
  • He succeeds in taking Ladybug's Miraculous and comes close to taking Cat Noir's Miraculous.
  • Since the film is a universe separated from the series, he doesn't need to compete with the original franchise's villains for pass on the heinous standards.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is tragic as his actions are motivated by a desire to revive his late wife, with the loss of Emilie deeply affecting him, which is played for sympathy. He also has insecurities about being a good father and thinks that with his wife still alive his family would be happier.
  • He cares for both his wife and his son, the latter of which is shown when he calls Adrien home after knowing he is at the fair, in attempt to protect him from the akumatized villains.
  • In the end, he redeems himself after finding out Cat Noir is his son Adrien, willingly renouncing ownership of the Butterfly Miraculous and turning himself in to the police.

Trivia[]

  • Since Mayura is promised to appear in the sequel, there is a chance that she will set higher heinous standards for the cinematic universe and could make Hawk Moth's status change to being a Benchmark Villain or else remain Inconsistently Heinous.
