“ | Yeah...Oh no...We can't have that. My adorable little sister, trying as hard as she could...Left with no head on her shoulders. I'll kill everyone who messed with her...I'm gonna collect what's due. We'll pay you back for what you did to us! And as you lie dying, don't forget...That it was Gyutaro who sent you to the afterlife! | „ |
~ Gyutaro as he vows to kill the Demon Slayers who beheaded his sister. |
“ | The sufferings of my past were lessons on what to do to others as revenge! If I don't cause misery equal to my own unhappiness, I'll never balance the scales! That's how it is when you're a demon! And we kill anyone who tries to tell us otherwise. | „ |
~ Gyutaro attempting to justify his crimes to the Demon Slayers. |
“ | How truly unsightly. You couldn't save your sister! Don't be saved by your younger sister, but rather save her with these hands as you are the older one! Hey, you, how do you feel now? To have survived alone? Hey you, jackass, half-wit, maggot, retard, unhelpful nuisance, you. Why were you even born? | „ |
~ Gyutaro virulently mocking Tanjiro with the same words that people used to insult him with as a human. |
Gyutaro (妓夫太郎 Gyūtarō) is a major antagonist in the manga/anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, serving as the main antagonist of the Entertainment District arc. He is a member of the Twelve Kizuki, holding the position of Upper Rank Six, which he shared with his sister Daki.
As a human, Gyutaro lived over a century ago during the Edo Period and was a debt collector who lived in the Rashomon Riverbank of Yoshiwara, the lowest class of the Entertainment District, with his sister before they were nearly killed by a vengeful samurai and subsequently turned into demons by Doma.
He was voiced by Ryōta Ōsaka in Japanese and Brandon McInnis in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
Background[]
- As a human, he made a living as a debt collector and viciously beat up his sister's customers, even if they paid her fees on time.
- He taught his sister to act selfish and cruel towards others, which eventually led her to stab a samurai in the eye when he insulted Gyutaro to her face.
- He willingly chose to become a demon when Doma offered him his blood.
- As an Upper Rank of the Twelve Kizuki, he devoured hundreds of innocent people in order to gain more power for both himself and his sister. He also killed and devoured 15 Hashira over the course of his life as a demon.
- Unlike most demons, Gyutaro does not hunt and kill humans purely for food. Instead, his primary reason for hunting and killing people is to get revenge for all the extreme hardships and injustices he and his sister faced during his human lives by slaughtering those who are more fortunate than them.
The Entertainment/Red Light District Arc[]
- After emerging from his sister's body to defend her from Tengen's onslaught, he became very jealous towards the latter for his handsome looks and attempted to kill him using the poison on his flesh sickles.
- He showed no concern for the innocent bystanders who were nearly caught in the crossfire of his battle with Tengen and would have likely killed them had Tengen not used his bombs to create an opening for them to escape.
- He attempted to kill Hinatsuru by strangling her with his bare hand and would've succeeded had Tanjiro not fought him off to save her.
- He stabbed Inosuke from behind through the chest and would've killed him had Inosuke not been able to shift the position of his heart at the very last second.
- After poisoning Tengen, he cut off his left hand and left him for dead after the Hashira seemingly died from the venom coursing through his veins.
- When Tanjiro regained consciousness after being knocked out from Daki's attacks, Gyutaro sadistically tormented him for his own amusement by breaking his fingers and mocking him for his failure to protect his sister. He also offered to turn Tanjiro into a demon, but threatened to kill Nezuko if he refused.
- When Tengen and Tanjiro engaged him in battle together, Gyutaro tried to take them down by slashing through Tengen's left eye, stabbing Tengen in the stomach, and impaling Tanjiro through his jaw. Even after they managed to defeat and decapitate him, he refused to give up and tried to kill them all by releasing a huge wave of blood blades that destroyed the entire city. It was only because Nezuko was able to neutralize his Blood Demon Art with her own that he ultimately failed to kill any of the Demon Slayers.
- He used his flesh sickles to poison Tengen, Tanjiro, and Inosuke during his battle with the Demon Slayers. Had Nezuko not been able to use her Blood Demon Art to remove his poison from their bodies, they would have all perished. Tengen was also forced to retire as a Hashira from the Demon Slayer Corps due to the severe injuries that he received from his battle with Gyutaro.
- While arguing with Daki over their roles in their defeat, he insulted her for her weakness and, in the heat of the moment, told her that his life would've been better without her and that she never should've been born, which caused her eyes to well up with tears.
- During his final moments, he showed no remorse for any of his crimes and even admitted that he'd gladly become a demon again if he was ever given the chance.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While he chose to become a demon and felt no remorse for all the crimes he committed during his demon life, his backstory is incredibly tragic, as he was born into extreme poverty to an abusive mother who didn't want him around and tried to kill him several times when he was a toddler. He was also relentlessly bullied and abused by the other residents of the entertainment district for his poor hygiene and unsightly appearance, with people often throwing rocks at him to chase him away whenever he passed by. Without any money to buy food, he was forced to eat insects and mice to survive, which he killed with a small sickle that he got from a customer who accidentally left it behind.
- When his sister Ume was finally born, Gyutaro saw her as his pride and joy. After their mother died from syphilis, he started working as a debt collector on his sister's behalf in order to financially support them both. This decision made them enough money to where they could afford good food to eat and better clothes to wear. However, just when it looked like life was taking a turn for the better, everything came crashing down when Gyutaro returned home from work one day to find out that Ume had been betrayed by her manager and fatally burned by a vengeful samurai who'd been one of her customers. Upon realizing that she was still alive, he started to panic, but before he could do anything to help her, he was slashed from behind by the same samurai who'd burned her sister alive. When the samurai moved to finish him off, Gyutaro retaliated by stabbing his sister's former manager in the head and splitting the samurai's head in half, killing them both.
- After killing the samurai, Gyutaro grabbed his sister's charred body and carried her around the district to get her help. However, no one wanted to help them and they were turned away at every door. He eventually succumbed to exhaustion, leaving them both on the brink of death, and just when it looked like it was the end for both of them, they ran into Doma, who just happened to be passing through the district at the time and chose to save their lives by turning them into demons.
- He loved his sister more than anything, to where she was the only thing in the world that he truly cared about. From the moment she was born, he was fiercely protective of her and attacked their mother when she tried to harm Ume for her unusual hair color. He was also absolutely horrified to see her burned body and spent hours running around the district to get her help until his wounds started to take their toll and he eventually collapsed from exhaustion.
- Even after they both became demons and lost their memories of their human lives, Gyutaro never lost his familial love for his sister and brutally murdered any Hashiras who came after her. He also quickly came to her aid after she was beheaded by Tengen and took a moment to comfort her as he reattached her severed head and used his superior regeneration to heal her burns.
- In his final moments after their defeat against the Demon Slayers, Gyutaro came to deeply regret how he raised Daki and believed that she could've experienced many wonderful things and lived a truly happy life had he never been a part of it. He also genuinely wished that she'd raised by someone else in a normal household and believed that it was his negative influence that twisted her into the selfish and possessive person that she eventually became.
- When Gyutaro reunited with Daki in the afterlife, he tried to convince her to go to heaven and leave him to suffer in hell alone so that she could have a fresh start with him serving as a bad influence in her life. However, when she tearfully refused to abandon him and reminded him of the promise he made to her long ago that he'd always be there by her side, Gyutaro changed his mind and proceeded to enter the fires of hell while carrying her on his back, just like he'd always done before when they were humans.
- While he was extremely cruel, jealous, and murderous towards anyone blessed with a better life than him, this attitude mainly stemmed from his severe insecurities, which are easy to sympathize with since he was rejected for his "hideous" appearance and grew up in absolute squalor as a human.
- He offered Tanjiro the chance to become a demon because he had a younger sister just like him and told Tanjiro that if he became a demon, he could take better care of his sister and do a better job of protecting her from outside threats. Despite threatening to kill Nezuko if Tanjiro refused to take his offer, this shows that even with all the misery and pain that he lived through, Gyutaro still had a sense of honor and empathy.
- His death is played for sympathy, as the music in the background is very somber and his tragic backstory is revealed in its entirety. Tanjiro and Nezuko also can't help but feel sorry for both Gyutaro and Daki, and Tanjiro even covers Gyutaro's mouth when he starts insulting Daki for her weakness so they can at least die in peace together.
