~ Grodd attacking Central City. |
Grodd is a major antagonist in the 2014-2023 TV Series, The Flash and a supporting antagonist in Season 3 of its 2016 spin-off, DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
Initially a gorilla experimented on by S.T.A.R. Labs, Grodd forms a strong relationship with both “Harrison Wells” and Caitlin Snow. After the explosion of the particle accelerator, Grodd became the only known animal meta-human and gained the power of intelligence and mind-control. After being used by Eobard Thawne to fight the Flash, Grodd starts stealing chemicals with which he intends to create more sentient gorillas. After this plan is foiled by the Flash as well, Grodd is cast through a breach to Earth-2, where he arrives in Gorilla City. Craving to return home, Grodd plots against the city's leader Solovar, eventually usurping him and leading the gorilla army against Earth-1. His plan failed and the gorilla remained on Earth-1, while still posing a great threat to both Flash and humanity. After being freed, Grodd joined Damien Darhk and Nora Darhk in seeking the release of the demon Mallus to rule the timeline, but was defeated by the Legends of Tomorrow numerous times.
Seeking revenge, Grodd escaped from A.R.G.U.S. to become the new ruler of Central City, however, he was brutally defeated by King Shark, a reformed enemy of the Flash. After the Anti-Monitor Crisis, Grodd remembered everything in his new home, Earth-Prime, and chose to make amends for his villainous actions, getting trapped in his mental prison, asking the Flash for help, making him trust that he had changed. Grodd and the Flash joined forces to save after destroying Solovar in his mind and he remained free, now that he was befriended by Team Flash.
His Evil Deeds[]
What Makes Him Heinous[]
In General[]
- While Zoom, Savitar, Reverse Flash and Anti-Monitor did worse, they were far more powerful and had larger resources to work with so he can't be compared to them.
- Despite the high Arrowverse's high heinous standard, Grodd stands out for his much lower resources and fewer abilities plus his smaller screen time.
Season 1[]
- He killed two maintenance workers when they discovered his lair.
- He mind-controlled General Eiling into attacking a gold reserve.
- He kidnapped Joe West and nearly forced him to kill himself with his own gun, only to make him toss it away, implying he did so out of sadism.
Season 2[]
- He brainwashed scientists to gather neuro-enhancing chemicals for him as part of his plan to create more intelligent gorillas like himself.
- He kidnapped Caitlin Snow to force her to help him.
Season 3[]
- He sent an invitation to Harry Wells and killed the ten individuals Harry brought with him to Gorilla City, wanting to use Harry as bait to lure Team Flash there.
- He captured Barry and his allies, locking them in cages, and lying that Solovar wanted to conquer Earth-1 with his Gorilla army to manipulate Barry into defeating Solovar in combat. He even threatens to destroy Central City himself if he failed to do so.
- After Barry defeated Solovar, Grodd revealed his deception to Barry and how he was going to attack Central City with his Gorilla army.
- He captured and brainwashed Gypsy, planning to use her to open a breach to Earth-1.
- He mind-controlled Joe and once again forced him to kill himself with his own gun, nearly succeeding had Barry not pushed Joe out of the bullet's trajectory.
- He launched an assault on Central City and later attempts to destroy it with a missile.
Legends of Tomorrow[]
- He attacked American and Vietnamese soldiers, taking control of the survivors to serve him and build a kingdom for himself.
- He planned to assassinate President Johnson to trigger World War III to get revenge on humanity.
- Though he initially considered Amaya’s offer to take him to a time before humans, he rejected her offer when Mick Rory and his father arrived with a platoon of soldiers, believing she was tricking him.
- He attempted to steal the Legends’ timeship to alter history and eradicate humans from the timeline.
- He willingly joined Damien Darhk in his quest to free Mallus from his prison.
- He attacked the Great Wall of China.
- He attacked the Time Bureau, beating its director, Wilbur Bennett, to death.
- He traveled back in time to 1979 and tries to kill Barack Obama when he was a college student.
- He destroyed Amaya’s village in order to prevent Mallus from being freed.
Season 5[]
- He took control of an A.R.G.U.S. guard and forced him to cut the power to his cells, allowing him to escape.
- He stole Shay Lamden’s telepathic crown, intending to use it to brainwash all of Central City. This forced Lamden to permanently turn himself back into King Shark to stop Grodd’s attack.
Season 9[]
- He initially helped Red Death attack Central City by amplifying her powers with his telepathy in a desperate attempt to rebuild Gorilla City, which was destroyed after the Anti-Monitor Crisis.
What Makes Him Inconsistent[]
- He has a tragic backstory that is played for sympathy, he was tortured by General Wade Eiling of the U.S. military in his experiments, which was more than likely the cause of his hatred for humanity. It’s also implied Thawne was very controlling of the gorilla.
- He cared about his father Eobard Thawne, being saddened over his "death".
- After the Anti-Monitor Crisis, he finally realized how wrongs his actions were and redeems himself, even reconciling with Barry Allen.
