It is not yet five days since the bitter tidings came that Théodred your son was slain upon the West Marches: your right-hand, Second Marshal of the Mark. In Éomer there is little trust. Few men would be left to guard your walls, if he had been allowed to rule. And even now we learn from Gondor that the Dark Lord is stirring in the East. Such is the hour in which this wanderer chooses to return. Láthspell I name you, Ill-news; and ill news is an ill guest they say.
~ Wormtongue to Gandalf while manipulating Théoden.
Saruman: No evil? Oh no! Even when he sneaks out at night it is only to look at the stars. But did I hear someone ask where poor Lotho is hiding? You know, don't you Worm? Will you tell them?
Wormtongue: No, no!
Saruman: Then I will. Worm killed your chief, poor little fellow, your nice little boss. Didn't you, Worm? Stabbed him in his sleep, I believe. Buried him, I hope, though Worm has been very hungry lately. No, Worm is not really nice. You had better leave him to me.
Wormtongue: You told me to; you made me do it!
Saruman: You do what Sharkey says, always, don't you, Worm? Well, now he says follow!
~ Saruman to Grima moments before the latter kills him.

Grima Wormtongue is a major antagonist of J.R.R Tolkien's fantasy novel trilogy: The Lord of the Rings. He is the right hand of the evil wizard Saruman who was responsible for corrupting King Théoden. After the fall of Isengard, Wormtongue helped Saruman with the Scourging of the shire.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He betrayed the kingdom of Rohan to work for Saruman because of his lust for Eoyowen.
    • He is also presumed to have stalked her.
  • He poisoned the mind of King Théoden, causing him to let the armies of Isengard conquer his kingdom, and ignore the death of his son.
  • He sold out Saruman to the Witch King, knowing and not caring that the Nazgul would torture his master.
  • Helped Saruman conquer the shire and turn it into their fiefdom.
    • He killed and apparently ate Lotho Sackville-Baggins in the process.
  • Despite the massive heinous standards, of Middle-Earth, Wormtongue stands out due to his low resources and the unique crime of cannibalism.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is horribly abused by Saruman throughout the trilogy, and the wizard eventually either forced him to eat Lotho, or lied about it to get the hobbits to kill him. This is all played for sympathy.
  • He redeemed himself in a way. Frodo offers him a chance to leave Saruman, and he would have taken it if Saruman hadn't told all the hobbits that he had killed Lotho. Wormtongue then kills Saruman before being shot by the hobbit, ending the evil wizard once and for all.
