This article pertains to an Inconsistently Heinous with more than one version who is Inconsistently Heinous!

It's believed that during the following geological period, the Cretaceous period, a rare intermediate organism was evolving from a marine reptile into a terrestrial animal. Following Odo Island tradition, I propose for the time being that we call this creature Godzilla.
~ Kyohei Yamane revealing Godzilla and his ancient origins during a meeting.
Godzilla was baptized in the fire of the H-bomb and survived. What could kill him now? Right now, our priority should be to study his incredible powers of survival.
~ Yamane sympathizing and wanting Godzilla to be studied than killed.
I can't believe that Godzilla was the last of his species. If nuclear testing continues, then someday, somewhere in the world, another Godzilla may appear.
~ Yamane after Godzilla's death, warning about the potential awakening of another Godzilla if nuclear testing continued.

Godzilla (ゴジラ, Gojira), also known specifically as the Original Godzilla, is the overarching antagonist of the Showa era, the Heisei era and the Millennium era in Toho's Godzilla franchise.

He is a prehistoric reptilian kaiju who was mutated or awakened by an American hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific, which destroyed his habitat and drew him out. Godzilla then unleashed his vengeful wrath upon humanity for his loss as a force of nature. After devastating the Japanese city of Tokyo, he was ultimately killed by Daisuke Serizawa's Oxygen Destroyer. Following his death, and as depicted in many continuities, another Godzilla would probably awaken after some time.

He was portrayed by the late Haruo Nakajima and the presumably late Katsumi Tezuka.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • Not only is he a kaiju, but he also serves as an unapologetic allegory of nuclear weapons and the embodiment of nuclear devastation. His mere existence is a reminder of humanity's self-destructive nature and his rampage mirrors the real-life fears Japan felt at the end of World War II.
  • It is shown that he doesn't just trample buildings during his rampage of Tokyo; he also kills fleeing and terrified individuals. The devastation and psychological trauma he leaves behind is just as significant as the physical destruction he causes, and doesn't feel any remorse of his catastrophic actions.
  • Since conventional weapons (or even nuclear weapons) do nothing to stop him, this makes him more of an inescapable harbinger of doom than just a simple kaiju.
  • His presence alone throws Japan into a state of both panic and helplessness. Even when Kyohei Yamane argued with studying Godzilla, this reinforced the idea that humanity is powerless against him.
  • Given the fact he infected many survivors of his rampage with radiation sickness and inflicting haunting moments on the Japanese people, it shows how much of a frighteningly serious force he is played when in terms of reflecting real-life events.
  • Despite being one of the weakest Godzillas, he still passed the heinous standard due to the film's much darker tone and his relentless rampage in Tokyo by nightfall.
    • While other kaiju in subsequent films are more powerful than him, they can't do any better with their continuous rampage in Japan when compared to this Godzilla, thus making the kaiju stand out with just less resources.
  • It's also worth noting that this Godzilla attacked Japan out of vengeance, compared to the Heisei Godzilla (who is driven by instinct and the desire of protecting and nurturing Godzilla Junior) and the Kiryu Godzilla (who seeks to look for and reunite with his father, whose skeletal remains are stuffed inside Kiryu himself).

Godzilla[]

  • Upon surfacing, he attacked and sank two Japanese freighters, Eiko-maru and Bingo-maru, as well as a fishing boat carrying survivors offshore of Japan and Odo Island.
    • Consequently, his massacre indirectly left the fishing community in Odo Island unable to catch anything else entirely.
  • He attacked the village in Odo Island during a typhoon by crushing 17 houses, killing nine people and 20 of the inhabitants' livestock.
    • During his rampage, he also stomped Shinkichi Yamada's home, which had his family inside, and Shinkichi was forced to watch and shout in horror as the kaiju crushed them to death. This caused Shinkichi to become an orphan until he was adopted by Kyohei Yamane later on.
  • As he woke up, he gave a horrific roar/shriek to the onlookers, who posed no threat to him as they were just fleeing, though Emiko Yamane ended up screaming in horror at the kaiju's terrifying sight and mercy.
  • After his existence became public, he destroyed 17 more ships as he began making his way to the Japanese mainland.
  • Whether unintentional or indirect, his brief appearance in Tokyo Bay caused nationwide panic and emergency across Japan.
  • He briefly rampaged Tokyo's Shinagawa Station, where he dismantled a train after it crashed into his foot and proceeded to grip it with his jaws, endangering and (potentially) killing anyone inside as he shook and dropped it to the ground below.
  • Before raiding Tokyo, he was indirectly responsible for thwarting Emiko into telling her father about her relationship with Hideto Ogata, which ended up with Ogata being sidetracked by an argument over Kyohei's insistence of keeping Godzilla alive.
  • After being provoked by an electric fence, he began tearing the towers and the high-tension wires before unleashing his atomic breath to melt the fence out of retaliation.
  • He proceeded to rampage the heart of Tokyo throughout the night, particularly by setting it ablaze with his atomic breath and smashing through landmarks with his massive bulk. However, there are also a couple of haunting moments during his rampage, whether he did indirectly or not:
    • A group of countless disoriented civilians getting unexpectedly killed with his atomic breath while fleeing.
    • A mother comforting her children and telling them they will soon join their father as they perish among the fires.
    • A group of reporters meeting their inevitable doom as Godzilla bites the radio tower they were standing.
  • In the aftermath of his rampage, not only did he turn Tokyo into an uninhabitable wasteland, but (as this doesn't rely on Fridge Horror) he also poisoned the remaining survivors by his waking radioactivity. Like his rampage on Tokyo, there were some dreadfully powerful moments he inflicted on the survivors, regardless whether he did indirectly or not:
    • Dr. Tanabe waving a Geiger counter over a child and nodded, confirming the child was poisoned by Godzilla's radiation.
    • A young girl crying over her unconscious (possibly dead) mother.
  • As he sensed Ogata and Daisuke Serizawa while resting underwater, he traveled around the sea floor to find and kill them, but this ultimately led to his death.
  • Though his reign of terror on Japan would be over, his rampage on Tokyo would continue haunting Japan for many years, until a second Godzilla would eventually appear and terrorize Japan again, as warned by Kyohei that it's unlikely that Godzilla was the last of his species.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is FAR too tragic and sympathetic to be NPE or PE, since he was an innocent creature who hibernated inside a deep underwater cavern peacefully until a hydrogen bomb test was deployed near his sanctuary, mutating and permanently scarring him with the nuclear radiation as a result. This could mean that beneath his terrifying, wrathful nature lies a genuinely broken individual whose thunderous roars indicate the great pain he had experienced.
    • To further add sympathy for him, Kyohei Yamane argued and insisted that Godzilla shouldn't be killed, but rather preserved and studied due to the kaiju's ability to withstand radiation, which would imply that the paleontologist reflected genuine pity for Godzilla.
  • He is ultimately a scapegoat, since he is a victim of humanity's arrogant actions after his mutation and, as seen when he briefly surfaced near a pleasure boat in Tokyo Bay, an understandably lonely creature currently stuck in a world that fears and hates him.
  • He is a villain by proxy, as his rampage in Tokyo evokes more about humanity's disastrous consequences rather than an inherently evil deed he commits. It should be worth noting that, not only is he a harbinger of nuclear devastation, but is additionally a harbinger of war itself.
  • He does have deep care for his family, as seen before his eventual mutation when he lived and coexisted with them happily and became enraged after they were killed by the hydrogen bomb, in which he avenges them by taking his rage out on humanity.
  • He has severe moral agency issues, as he is technically an animal who lashes out at humanity for their careless use of nuclear weapons and is mostly driven by instinct rather than direct malice. Moreover, his choices are unclear, as the devastation he left in Tokyo is whether he "chose" to do so out of hate, vengeance or simply because he is a displaced, confused creature.
  • His death by the Oxygen Destroyer was played out of pure sympathy, as he surfaced near the Shikine boat and gave a roar that, not only signals defiance but also out of the excruciating pain he had endured for a very long time. While most mourn Daisuke Serizawa's sacrifice afterwards, Yamane is the only one who mourns Godzilla's death and was left with such devastation for failing his goal to study the kaiju and couldn't help salute or mourn with the rest of the crew, which makes the ending narrative even sadder and more somber.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first Godzilla incarnation, as well as the first Godzilla character, to be an IH.
    • In addition, he is one of the three mainline Godzilla incarnations to be IHs, the others being Shin and Earth.
  • According to an elder in Odo Island, Godzilla is a kaiju who comes from the sea to feed on people, and whenever fishing was poor, the natives used to sacrifice women to prevent him from attacking the village. Although it was never shown during the film, it would likely affect his IH status if it is.
    • In addition, a deleted scene showed Godzilla gripping a bleeding cow in his jaws, but the late Eiji Tsuburaya dropped the effect due to it being quite gruesome, treacherous and unconvincing. If this scene was exploited in the film, it would make this Godzilla more brutal and terrifying.
