Gavin Archer is the main antagonist of the DLC Overlord of the video game Mass Effect 2. He is the brother of David Archer who was behind Project Overlord, whose purpose was to analyze the alien synthetic species known as the Geth.

He is voiced by Simon Templeman.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • Even before he decided to experiment on his brother, he still taught of him as more useful to his project just for being autistic.
  • After the Illusive Man threatened to shut down his operation, Gavin decided to experiment and torture his brother to advance his communications with the Geth, this made David go insane and attack the scientists experimenting on him.
  • After David decided to attack his lab with Geth, he decided to hide in a room while all the other scientists were killed by David.
  • He tries to stop Shepard if he decides to bring his brother to an academy to further study his abilities without hurting him out of fear of losing his job.
  • Overall, he is so heinous that even several other heinous villains themselves (the Illusive Man included) felt disgust for what he did to his brother.
  • Despite the high heinous standards of Mass Effect, Gavin stands out with his resources and for just how horrible his torture towards David was.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He feels deep remorse for his actions to the point that he can't be Near Pure Evil, this is first seen when Shepard tells him that he gave his brother's happiness for his ambitions, while Gavin initially tries to deny it, when he sees David crying and saying a mathematical problem that he constantly mentioned before he was experimented on, Gavin answers it, and said that what he did was unethical. He would later appear in Mass Effect 3, where he can either commit suicide out of regret for possibly causing David's death, or help Shepard in stopping the Reapers, essentially redeeming himself.
  • He had genuinely good intentions, despite how awful his actions were, as seen when Shepard confronts him for what he did to David and mentioning that what he did was "so a million mothers would not mourn the deaths of a million sons" and to avoid more deaths because of the Geth.
  • He truly cared for his brother, despite what he did to him, he had several moments of kindness towards him, such as telling him quietly if he could report his audio log after David told Gavin to stop speaking loudly, answering his equation when he saw what he did to David, giving him mercy kill in one of the endings, and even killing himself out of the possible idea that he might have killed his brother.
