~ GLaDOS to Chell upon reawakening, also her most famous quote |
Caroline, currently known as the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, better known as GLaDOS for an abbreviation, is the main antagonist of the first-person puzzle game franchise Portal.
She serves as the main antagonist of the first game, and the main antagonist of the first half of the second game, though she "redeems" herself and becomes the deuteragonist of the second half of the second game.
She was voiced by the opera singer Ellen McLain.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- She flooded the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin, killing many scientists, just before her Morality Core was installed, making her responsible for the Aperture Science Facility's abandoned state.
- She sent test subjects to their deaths to see how experimental technology is handled at the hands and got a sick and twisted kick out of the deaths.
- Throughout the first game she increasingly became more and more violent, eventually trying to kill Chell. She also psychologically abused Chell in many cases.
- She crushed Wheatley after being brought back to life, possibly to avoid a core transfer or because he's Chell's accomplice.
- She took revenge on Chell during the second game and proceeded to drop her further into the facility and making her endure further tests, all the while making snide comments about her weight and status as an orphan.
- She deleted her program of Caroline's personality, becoming a cold, evil machine once again after being reinstalled and defeating Wheatley.
- Instead of saving Wheatley from space, she left him for dead and instead solely prioritized in saving Chell, giving him a fate worse than death. While it's true Wheatley deserved it, it was her own fault why Wheatley became evil, not to mention he showed genuine remorse over his actions.
- She planned to have a massive amount of humans that have been preserved in a cryogenic vault since the 20th century turned into an army of soldiers for her testing.
- She treated a nest of baby birds poorly due to the fact their mother made a nest on the keyboard of a device that was supposed to be a prototype version of her chassis (though she had a change of heart after they escaped their prison).
- In the co-op mode, she appears to have standards against ATLAS and P-Body destroying other machines during the tests even though they're both machines themselves, but this is mostly a façade as GLaDOS was the one who set those tests up to begin with.
- While she has comedic moments, they don't detract from her villainy.
- While the G-Man and Wallace Breen did worse things, they have more resources than GLaDOS.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She is very tragic as she was once a human known as Caroline, an assistant to the founder of the Aperture Science, Cave Johnson. She then, possibly against her will, was uploaded as an A.I and reborn as GLaDOS, the demand for experimentation slowly twisted her into a nihilistic villain.
- Despite everything, she still had care for Cave Johnson, as she genuinely was glad to hear him again and agreed to his rants, and after Cave's final recording, she sorrowfully told him goodbye.
- She helps Chell defeat Wheatley after he becomes corrupted by power after taking control of the facility and even saves her life from being sucked out into space. This also shows that GLaDos is honorable.
- She has some respect for Chell, ultimately sparing her life and letting her go, even if it was because she has come to the conclusion that Chell's presence has been the reason for all her troubles since the first Portal game.
- The song to the end credits in Portal 2 also implies that, despite her constant claims that she's better off without Chell in her life, she does genuinely find it difficult to say goodbye to her.
Trivia[]
- It has been theorized that GLaDOS was lying about deleting Caroline due to her effectively being Caroline, as well as her Portal 2 credits song noting how "little Caroline is here too". If it is true, it will make GLaDOS even better.
