“ | My brothers, now the next step of our plan shall commence! You must all go and spread the word of frowning! Pretty soon, everyone will embrace sadness, and there will be no such thing as smiling! And once that’s done, we can finally eradicate all the Puerto Ricans on the planet! [crowd stops cheering]]... I mean, make everyone on the planet frown! [crowd cheers again] Nothing matters because we’re all going to die someday! | „ |
~ Grim about his and Gnarly's plans. |
“ | But did you know that all of earth’s helium is running out and will be completely depleted within fifteen to twenty years? | „ |

The Frowning Friends are the main antagonists of the Smiling Friends episode of the same name.
They consisted of Grim and Gnarly, who are evil counterparts of the show's main protagonists, Pim and Charlie. Unlike the Smiling Friends, whose mission is to spread happiness, the Frowning Friends are determined to make people depressed and miserable.
Grim is voiced by Michael Cusack, who also voices Mr. Frog, while Gnarly is voiced by Zach Hadel.
Their Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Them Heinous?[]
- They made several people frown, such as telling DJ Spitz that his music is terrible and insulting 3D Squeelton, planning to make the entire world frown, even getting a ton of supporters, such as Mr. Lyle, to help them.
- They hired Alan and Glep to imprison Pim and Charlie, and had the latter watch a horrific video showing the world's struggles.
- When they took over the world with frowns, they plan to eradicate every single Puerto Rican on Earth for no given reason whatsoever.
What Makes Them Inconsistent?[]
- They are played for laughs a lot, such as when Grim immediately bursts into tears and wets himself when Mr. Boss threatens to shoot him and Gnarly right after the former's nihilistic speech and making cringe jokes at the expense of the Smiling Friends, with even them wanting to murder the Puerto Ricans being played for black comedy.
- They care for each other, as they say that they "love" each other while dishing insults at Charlie and Pim.
- They redeem themselves by realizing how good joy is when they smile for the first time.
- Their deaths were underserved and played for much sympathy, especially considering that they learned the errors of their ways at the end.
