Rebirth, resurrection, eternal life. Life that rises again. Even out of blackness, love rises again. Even out of sin. And this island, it will rise again. Even out of disaster, rebirth, restoration, eternal life.
~ Father Paul Hill's famous quote.

Monsignor John Pruitt, also known as Father Paul Hill is the former central antagonist of Netflix Gothic Horror Miniseries Midnight Mass.

He was the priest at St. Patrick's Church from the island of Crocket. In his old ages, he went to Jerusalem to find Jesus’ tomb, in the process, he found a creature that he called "an angel”, which it is in fact, a vampire. He, alongside Bev Keane, is entirely responsible for the destruction of Crocket Island, therefore leading the deaths of the island’s entire population in the process, including himself.

He is portrayed by Hamish Linklater.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He brought the Vampire to Crocket and used his blood in the communion wine ever since he arrived. This brought many consequences as the Vampire in the nights killed and devoured many cats and leaves their dead bodies in the shore.
    • It also devoured the Town’s drug dealer Bowl, which made his mother worried for his disappearance.
  • He killed Joe Collie, the town drunk, by bashing his head into a table, and drank his blood afterwards. Even though it was accidental, he felt no remorse for Joe’s death. Nevertheless, he took part in covering it, alongside Wade, the town’s mayor, Sturge and Bev Keane.
  • He watched the Vampire killing Riley Flynn and drinking his blood, without helping him. Not long after, he considered it as a gift from God, while it is the opposite. This made Riley sacrifice his life in the process so that he doesn’t hurt the people he loves.
  • During the titular Midnight Mass, he revealed his identity as a rejuvenated Monsignor John Pruitt, unveiling the Vampire to a shocked congregation. Pruitt informs them that they all have the Angel's blood and encourages them to drink poison to die and be reborn. Several people do so, including Leeza’s parents, Sturge, Ooker and Sheriff Hassan’s son Ali.
  • He, alongside Bev Keane, is responsible for the island’s population to die at the end of the series, as everyone became bloodthirsty vampires, and turning everyone who didn’t drink the poison, including Riley’s parents, excluding Sheriff Hassan, Erin Greene, Warren Flynn and Leeza Scarborough, the latter two who survived, therefore they all died, including Sheriff Hassan, Erin, his daughter Sarah and Mildred.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has a sympathetic backstory, as when he was an old man, he had dementia and got lost in the desert of Jerusalem, where he found the Vampire and he turned into one.
  • He had genuine intentions as he wanted to give the people of Crocket the vampire’s gift, which he considered a miracle.
  • Even before and after he revealed his heinous actions, he is very affable to everyone from the island, including to Riley and Joe, the two being sinners (Riley for driving while drunk, which caused the death of a girl, and Joe for shooting Leeza with his rifle, when she was a girl, thus living her without the ability to walk) and Sheriff Hassan.
  • He genuinely loves Mildred, as when they were young, they both fell in love and had their daughter Sarah. His plan was to reunite himself with Mildred and Sarah. Despite the fact that she is a lesbian, he cares for his daughter Sarah, and was genuinely distraught the fact Sturge killed her, tried to save her with his blood, only to reject it.
  • He has standards, as he didn’t want the vampiric churchgoers to set loose to Crocket Island and he was disgusted by Bev’s actions and zealous beliefs as she is far malevolent than he is.
  • He saw the error of his ways as he finally realized he was wrong from the beginning, and after Sarah’s death because of his actions, he redeemed himself and he, alongside Mildred embrace their fate as they die by sunlight.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first and only villain from Mike Flanagan's work to be Inconsistently Heinous.
