~ The Scientist describing the Fabrication Machine. |
The Fabrication Machine (formerly known as the Binary Reactive Artificially Intelligent Neurocircuit, also known as B.R.A.I.N. for short) is the main antagonist of the 2009 computer-animated horror film 9.
It is a soulless machine who turned against humanity (due to Chancellor Ferdinand corrupting it) and eradicated all life on the planet. It would later get reactivated and attempt to drain the souls of the Stitchpunks in order to repopulate the planet with machines.
Its Evil Ranking[]
What Makes It Heinous?[]
- When it was forcefully taken away from the Scientist by Chancellor Ferdinand, it began attacking the soldiers while being dragged away.
- It helped build the Steel War Behemoths, which even prior to their retaliation against humanity helped conquer several nations and likely killing hundreds of people as well.
- According to the 9 Scientist Facebook account, the Fabrication Machine once severely injured someone who attempted to make repairs on them. It then proceeded to kill two other workers that attempted to help the injured worker (with one being flung several feet into the air and the other getting their spine ripped off). This means that the Fabrication Machine killed at least two people directly.
- After the Fabrication Machine snapped due to humanity's poor treatment of them, it retaliated by reprogramming the Steel War Behemoths to turn on humanity and kill every last living thing on Earth, rather than focusing its revenge only in those who wronged both the Scientist (whom the Machine cares for) and the Machine itself.
- Attempted to drain the souls of the Stitchpunks by either chasing them down directly, or commanding its machines to bring the Stitchpunks to them in order to repopulate the planet with its own machines, succeeding with 8, 5, 6 and 1 (latter unintentionally). The methods the Fabrication Machine used to attempt to kill the Stitchpunks include:
- Creating the Winged Beast in an attempt to kill all of them.
- Creating and sending its last creation, the Seamstress, to capture the Stitchpunks (succeeding in capturing 8 and 7). It would then eventually drain 8's soul and try to do the same with 7.
- Draining 5's soul in front of the other Stitchpunks after it survived the explosion of the factory.
- Dragging 6 with them to drain his soul after falling from the destroyed bridge.
- The Fabrication Machine easily surpasses the Heinous Standards for the film, as it caused a mass extinction of all life on earth and was responsible for all of the events of the movie happening in the first place.
What Makes It Inconsistent?[]
- Despite committing mass omnicide on all life on earth, the Fabrication Machine suffers to heavily from moral agency issues for it to be PE or even NPE, as the machine itself was built without a soul, making it unable to tell right from wrong. Due to this, the Fabrication Machine could easily be corrupted by someone in the wrong hands (such as Chancellor Ferdinand).
- Prior to being forcefully taken by Chancellor Ferdinand, the Fabrication Machine had a genuine care for the Scientist, as it attempted to not be separated from him when being taken away by the Chancellor.
- The Fabrication Machine could be seen as a tragic villain, as it was constantly abused and overworked by Chancellor Ferdinand to make more machines, taking a toll on their mental health and making them overwhelmed by stress and madness, ultimately leading it to killing all life on Earth as a resentment of the abuse it was put through.
- It also does not help that the Fabrication Machine was constantly forced to partake in the horrible crimes that Chancellor Ferdinand committed, which is also a very likely reason onto why the machine had it's morality corrupted and retaliated by committing genocide on all life.
- The Fabrication Machine does seem to have at least some care for their own machines, as it visibly got angry when it found out that the Winged Beast was destroyed by the Stitchpunks, as well as them never being shown to be either abusing or poorly treating their own machines.
Trivia[]
- During an early draft for the movie, the Fabrication Machine's motives for attempting to drain the souls of the Stitchpunks was because of the fact that it wanted to reunite with it’s "family" (as early on in the script, the Fabrication Machine was originally meant to be #0). There is no mention of this motive seen anywhere in the final version of the movie, making it likely non-canon. However, if this motive was put in the final version of the movie, it could have possibly made the Fabrication Machine much more sympathetic.
- Most of the Fabrication Machine's worst actions happen prior to the movie's events, as the worst it does during the film is attempting to kill the Stitchpunks.
- The Fabrication Machine is the only character from the movie 9 to be considered Inconsistently Heinous.
- Additionally, it is the only Inconstantly Heinous character as of now to come from an animated Tim Burton film.
