“ | What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk... have at you! | „ |
~ Dracula's most iconic quote taken right from André Malraux; said right before trying to kill Richter Belmont. |
“ | Alucard: Go back whence you came! Trouble the soul of my mother no more! Dracula: How? How is it that I've been so defeated? Alucard: You have been doomed ever since you lost the ability to love. Dracula: Ah...sarcasm. 'For what profit is it to [a] man if he gains the world, and loses his own soul?' Matthew 16:26 I believe. Alucard: ......... Dracula: Tell me. What... what were Lisa's last words? Alucard: She said "Do not hate humans. If you cannot live with them, then at least do them no harm. For their's is already a hard lot." She also said to tell you that she would love you for all of eternity... Dracula: Lisa, forgive me. Farewell, my son… |

Count Vlad Tepes Dracula, formerly known as Mathias Cronqvist, is the main antagonist of Konami's Castlevania franchise.
Once a human, he lived with his wife Elisabetha. However, she died from becoming terminally ill, causing him to become a vampire in order to spite god. Later on, he has another wife named Lisa, and during that time, his son Alucard was born. However, one day, she was accused of witchcraft by humans. This drove him mad, causing him to try to destroy mankind until his eventual permanent death in 1999 after hundreds of years of conflict.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
Background and In General[]
- Throughout the series, he has tried killing many people who came to his castle, such as several Belmont's, Maria, Shanoa, and even his own son, Alucard.
- Throughout the series, he has monsters terrorize Europe and Transylvania and corrupts a lot of people into turning evil.
- He ends up becoming a vampire in order to spite god.
- He had his minions kidnap many young women from a village, and even kill some of them despite some of them being children.
- He ends up using a vampire named Walter as a pawn, having him capture Sara and then having Death kill him when he failed to defeat Leon, though Walter did deserve it.
- When his wife Lisa dies due to being accused of witchcraft, he responds by declaring war on all of humanity.
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Curse of Darkness[]
- Upon his first defeat, he curses the land of Europe to rot and poisoned the all the minds of its inhabitants, turning them evil.
Castlevania I and II: Simon's Quest[]
- When Simon Belmont ends up defeating him, he uses a death curse on him to end up having him be killed.
Aftermath[]
- Despite reincarnating as Soma Cruz and becoming a hero, this was the result of him losing his memories and personality. And even then, his old personality is shown to be capable of corrupting Soma.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has a legitimately tragic backstory, as he lost his first wife, Elisabetha, due to an illness of hers. This enraged him, believing god is what caused her death, and this is what caused him to become a vampire, as he did it in order to spite him. Later on, he has another wife, Lisa, but humanity ends up killing her due to thinking she committed witchcraft. This drove him mad, and is what caused him to declare war on humanity. All of his actions in general are somewhat justified due to the fact everyone he wronged had technically wronged him in some way, and it portrays him in a sympathetic light.
- He genuinely cared for his family, being upset at his wives deaths, and genuinely caring for Alucard, as although he did try killing him, he simply tried talking him into helping him, and hated having to fight him.
- He has felt remorse over his actions in the end of Symphony Of The Night, as he now realizes that his wife never wanted him to declare war on humanity, causing him to feel immense sadness and beg her for forgiveness.
- Due to constantly being resurrected for the purpose of being evil, his moral agency is highly questionable at best. However the fact he has a clearly defined personality, motivation, and is capable of manipulating others makes this a minor prevention.
- He comes off as legitimately affable, speaking kindly to his minions and sometimes even his enemies.
- He does show a sense of honor, as he usually holds back at first, he is willing to spare anyone who decides to work for him, and he holds up on the end of his deals.
