NOTE: This is a composite profile of Dr. Zomboss's international and Chinese versions, as they both go in separate directions in their continuities with Plants vs. Zombies 2 being the sole exception.

Dr. Zomboss rules them all.
~ The description of Dr. Zomboss in the Almanac entry.
Edgar George Zomboss achieved his Doctorate in Thanatology in only two years. Quickly mastering thanatological technology, he built his fearsome Zombot and set about establishing absolute dominance over his local subdivision.
~ Dr. Zomboss' Almanac entry.
Fools! Lackwits! Did you think that that you… you, with your small but admittedly tasty-looking brains, could stop me, the master of all zombies? Then by all means, give it a try.
~ Dr. Zomboss.

Dr. Edgar George Zomboss is the main antagonist of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise.

He is an undead scientist who leads an army of zombies to defeat the plants and eat the homeowners' brains. He is also the arch-nemesis of Crazy Dave and the plants.

He was voiced by Russell Brand, who also voiced Dr. Nefario from the Despicable Me franchise.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • He attempted to eat the brains of the Player as well as Crazy Dave in numerous occasions and out of sadism.
  • While he is a zombie, he shows a moral agency and clear personality, being proud of being a villain and can choose to eat non-brain food like PopSmarts.
  • Shows almost to no regards for his zombies and even uses them as rat lab, in Battle For Neighborville he is a lot more cruel towards his zombies.

Background[]

  • Even before his worst actions, he bullied Stilts, Mr. Grim-Brim and Greg-Gangtuar throughout their whole time in college, motivating their turns to villainy.
  • In Plants vs. Zombies: Official Guide to Protecting Your Brains, Dave mentions that Zomboss started the zombie apocalypse "over a nice pot of tea", implying a stupid reason for him to claim countless deaths around the world, and that's why everything in the series happens.

In Games[]

  • In the first Plants vs. Zombies, he is responsible for launching various swarms of zombies at the player’s house for 3 days straight. He also launched one last attack at the player’s roof by using his Zombot.
  • In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Dr. Zomboss destabilized time by enacting Project Paradox, which possibly resulted in zombies ruling every time period ever.
  • He makes several attempts to manipulate the main characters in Plants vs. Zombies 2, including trying to manipulate the player into thinking that the zombies were “normal” people while Dave was a psychopathic murderer. He also tries to trick Penny into thinking she was a Zombot he created and lies to the main characters that the plant food was made from zombies.
  • He attempts to brainwash Dave so he would attack the player in the second game.
  • In the Garden Warfare boss mode trailer, he dropped missiles at several plants, killing them. He even proclaims "weed to death from above!" and laughs as he does so.
  • In the first Garden Warfare, he was responsible for the death of the Mega Flower, the destruction of the Tactical Cuke, the takeover of Crazy Dave's mansion and the destruction of a plant base.
  • In Garden Warfare 2, he took over the vast majority of Suburbia as Zomburbia, leaving only a small portion left.
    • He attempted to alter the Earth's orbit with Moon Base Z to rob the plants' of their photosynthesis, which would result in their eventual genocide since it would cause all of them to stop growing. It would also cause all life on Earth to die off due to the plants being absent.
    • He tried to launch the Ultra Zombot 6000 to attack the plants and tried to unleash the Yeti King to start a new ice age.
  • In Battle For Neighborville, during the Turf Takeover events of Peachy District, he has his zombie minions attempt to hijack TV signals to broadcast his TV show that makes zombies appear out of the TVs to eat the brains out of the homeowners around Neighborville.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • While in the first game, he was at least taken somewhat seriously, he is ultimately too comedic to be PE or at least NPE, as the franchise itself is played for laughs with almost nothing being taken seriously. He has too many detracting comedic moments such as:
    • Starting the zombie apocalypse over a nice pot of tea.
    • Having a hologram of him brushing his teeth in the boss podium in Plants vs. Zombies 2.
    • Mentioning parodied lyrics of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."
    • Falling into the portal in the trailer of Modern Day.
    • Losing against a tennis ball machine in Tennis Star's sticker book description.
    • Being punched in the pancreas by Patrice.
    • Even so, some of his crimes aren't taken seriously, including the TV hijacking playing out as a parody of The Ring.
  • He still cares for his minions, even in Battle For Neighborville, he still shows some respect to his zombies.
  • He has legitimate standards as he told the truth to Dave that re-eating his taco is impossible and it could cause temporal instability, but when Dave refused to listen and continued searching for his taco, he stands up against him for this multiple times before ultimately convincing him to stop by giving him a taco with a waffle in it.
  • In the Brothers Gnomus boss hunt, he saved a theme park from a gnome invasion by leading his zombie army to Time Park to banish the Brothers Gnomus back to the Gnomiverse and reclaim Time Park.
    • As it explicitly says in the boss hunt's description "reclaim Time Park," this implies that he and his zombies gave Time Park back to the plants as it looks like Time Park was originally owned by the plants.
      • It's heavily implied that Time Park is owned by the plants as its aesthetics match the plants' theme and it's similar to Seeds of Time which is also owned by the plants as they are the defending team on this map.
      • However, it is also possible that he is temporarily corporating with plants because the gnomes are a bigger threat.
  • He donated his liver to the Vanzeipel orphanage for cats.
  • In the Dark Horse comics, he cares for his pet hedgehog Mr. Stubbins.

Trivia[]

  • At the end of the pre-2021 version of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Dr. Zomboss tried to drain every plant in town with the Nightglare only to be stopped by the Magic Beans and he gets taken more seriously because he leaves the story with traumatic scars on Sunflower and Bonk Choy before depressing music was played in the background. Had this been kept, his status may have been affected.
