Dr. Joseph Albert Nefario, better known simply as Dr. Nefario, is a major character in Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise, serving as the tritagonist of Despicable Me, a major character in Despicable Me 2, a minor character in Minions, Despicable Me 3 and Despicable Me 4, and a supporting character in Minions: Rise Of Gru.
He is Gru’s assistant and friend who helped him become a great supervillain. After he redeemed due to becoming a father, however, Nefario goes on to be the assistant of the supervillain El Macho, who he later turns against when Macho threatens Gru’s family.
He was voiced by Russell Brand, who also voiced Dr. Zomboss from the Plants vs. Zombies franchise.

What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Before serving Gru, he helped the Vicious Six escape the AVL, likely knowing about their plans.
- He accepted Gru and the Minions' offer to help them in their villainy, even allowing them to use his ship.
- He showed little to no regret in his villainy, instead he enjoys causing mayhem and destruction to the point he's very passionate about it when discussed.
- He helped Gru with his plan to steal the moon by helping him locate the shrink ray Gru was going to use to shrink the moon, helping make the rocket to fly Gru to the moon, and making cookie robots so that Gru could use them to steal the shrink ray back from Vector.
- When Gru started to genuinely care for the girls, he sent them back to their orphanage run by the abusive Miss Hattie just because he thought they were distracting Gru from their plan to steal the moon.
- He experimented on the Minions with his inventions and when his experiments harmed them, he showed little care for their well-being.
- Upon becoming bored with heroism and starting to miss being evil, he quit Gru and joined El Macho in his plan to destroy multiple cities so he could take over the world, doing this by kidnapping most of the Minions and bringing them to El Macho, allowing them to inject the Minions with the PX-41 serum and turn them into killing machines.
- While he did turn against El Macho and cured the Minions, it was only because he learned El Macho took Lucy rather than standards against El Macho, admitting that "I'm happy to create an evil army to destroy the world, but nobody messes with my family".
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is extremely comedic and is pretty much never taken seriously, such as him making a fart gun instead of a dart gun, the speed of his scooter being played for laughs, and making Boogie Robots instead of Cookie Robots.
- He cares for several people:
- He cares for Gru and Lucy, as he saved Gru from Vector, tried to convince Gru to join El Macho with him, and turned against El Macho and helped Gru when he learned El Macho took Lucy.
- He cares for Margo, Edith and Agnes, as he saved them from the mutated Kevin and helped them cure the mutated Minions.
- He cares for the Minions, as he invented an antidote to cure their mutations after turning against El Macho.
- He has a pet the dog moment where after his ship picked up a cat after kidnapping the Minions, Jerry and Kevin, he let the cat go safe and unharmed.
- He started off as On & Off as he went from a villain helping Gru, to a hero after Gru turned good, to back to being a villain to help El Macho, to back to heroism after El Macho threatened Lucy and the girls, before finally abandoning villainy for good and redeeming himself, remaining by Gru's side and helping him revert his son back to normal after Maxime turned him into a cockroach hybrid.
- Even before to join Gru, he tried to adandon villainy after the Vicious Six were arrested, failing only because Gru and the Minions insisted.

- Dr. Nefario is the only Despicable Me character to be both Inconsistently Heinous and Inconsistently Admirable at the same time.
