“ | I HATE THAT HEDGEHOG!!! | „ |
~ Robotnik's famous catchphrase whenever he gets defeated. |
“ | Snooping as usual, I see?!! | „ |
~ Dr. Ivo Robotnik's most famous quote, mistranslated as "Snoo-PINGAS" for memes. |
“ | I've called you all together because you're the worst assortment of low-life mercenaries I ever made! You're mean! You're malicious! You're my kind of rotten! [audience cheers] Ever since I launched my ingenious plan to conquer the planet Mobius, one trouble-making teenager has made me tear every hair from my beautiful head! [shows a picture of Sonic; audience boos] You took the words right out of my mouth! I HATE that hedgehog! He ruins my schemes! [audience boos again] He escapes my traps! [audience boos again] He helps nice people! [audience boos for the final time] But no more! No more! I am hereby declaring Sonic the Hedgehog as Mobius' most wanted fugitive. To ensure his immediate capture, I am offering you the biggest reward in bounty hunter history: One-billion Mobiums! Alive... or otherwise! Sonic: Question from the crowd! Robotnik: What IS it?! Sonic: I'm worth WAY more than that! Robotnik: (Furiously growls) There he is! Get him! I want that hedgehog! |

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, better known as Dr. Robotnik, simply known as Robotnik is the main antagonist of the 1993 show Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, a human mad scientist with the I.Q. of 300. He is based on his video game counterpart, who attempts to defeat Sonic and Tails and conquer the planet Mobius.
He was voiced by Jim Cummings in the pilot and by the late Long John Baldry in the rest of the series.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- In "Lovesick Sonic", he created Breezie to seduce and distract Sonic, which he did so he can sink a village into the ground with his drilling machine without Sonic knowing.
- In "High Stakes Sonic", he created a casino for it to be ran by a card sharp named Smiley, a sleazy shark who gambled and scammed over a thousand Mobians to play for free labor. He also made tons of sheep work as his slaves who built a limestone statue of himself while he gets Coconuts to do the job of fanning him. Not to mention that he managed to hire a secretive pig bouncer (faking her role as Tails' babysitter) to trap Tails in a ball pit to make Tails fall into a cage Robotnik had, and he later forced Sonic into competing in a unfair race with Grounder that Robotnik rigged with dishonesty; where Sonic was forced by Robotnik to either lose the race to free Tails' imprisonment or win the race to save a thousand Mobians from becoming Robotnik's chained slaves while forced into making an 20 story tall monument.
- In "Sonic Breakout", he cages a avian artist for making a ridiculed image of Robotnik himself and forced the artist to make a good-looking drawing of Robotnik to show Mobius how "cool" Robotnik is to Mobius, to a which he then caged Sonic inside of Robotnik's giant weapon-filled, trap-oriented dungeon titled "Robotnik's Rot-Your-Life-Away Dungeons"; which he made so Sonic couldn't escape from at all.
- In "Trail of the Missing Tails", within a flashback, he banished his own cousin (against Warpnik's will) to exile him and have him be thrown into a surreal world inhabited by fish for being a loony and for his petty intolerance with Warpnik, which inadvertantly caused Warpnik to plot revenge while remaining imprisoned there.
- In "Big Daddy", he captures a baby gorilla's father (and separate him from his own son) and mind-controlled him to attack Sonic and terrorize Mobius under Robotnik's control.
- In "Best Hedgehog", he caged Lucas (his high school classmate) in his own dungeon for 30 years as the start of his villainy as a teenager, which he did as a act of revenge all because Lucas won Lucinda's heart and due to his love-struck obsession for Lucinda (a woman who Robotnik wanted to have to himself as a evil wife that Lucinda objected to). To make matters worse, Lucinda favoring Lucas over Robotnik, is what made Robotnik's career of villainy begun right after dropping out of school.
- In "Over the Hill Hero", he ordered Scratch and Grounder to bombard the Hill Top Village with sneeze bombs and he managed to trap Sonic in a force field ball while he destroys most of Hill Top Village.
- In "Sonic Gets Thrashed", he opens up a resort called "Robotnik Resort" to make the resident Mobians his slaves, he also attempts to destroy a valley of abandoned robots of his called Scrapy Valley and tried to fire his Hedgehog Harpoon at Sonic to poison him with toxic gas and then attempting to kill him on the top of Robotnik's blimp.
- In "Pseudo Sonic", he forced a rodent to work as a doppelganger of Sonic and was also ordered by Robotnik to sabotage and ruin Sonic's reputation as a public hero. Robotnik even forces him to do so by holding the poor mouse's parents hostage in Robotnik's lab room and threatening to harm or even kill them if the rodent didn't comply to Robotnik's orders.
- In "Boogey-Mania", he reprogrammed a dream-reality machine created by Von Schlemmer to unleash a giant brutish bogeyman to terrorize Mobius.
- In "Musta Been a Beautiful Baby", he attempts to transform Sonic into a elderly and frail shell of his former self, and even though the device turned himself, Sonic and Tails into babies. Plus, he also planned on killing them as babies by stepping on them. While Robotnik was fallible and bumbling as a infant, he also created several traps he intended for Sonic to be fall victim to and also being harmed and injured.
- In "Robotnik Junior", he attempts to use his extendo-tower solar-focusing lens ray to kill Sonic and Tails, and when Scratch and Grounder informs him that he will also incinerate many within a hundred square miles around Sonic, meaning he also would kill some innocent bystanders, Robotnik proclaims it's not a problem but a bonus for him.
- In "MacHopper", he brainwashed an kangaroo named MacHopper to capture Sonic and Tails.
- In "Mad Mike, Da Bear Warrior", he starves a village of rabbits to force them into building a statue of himself.
- In "Sonic the Matchmaker", he dismantled Breezie and Robotnik Jr. by dumping out their heads in a junk yard before building a robo-wife to serve him while he plans to cause a drought and making everyone in Mobius go hungry so their suffering will then be Robotnik’s wedding present to himself during his honeymoon by creating a waterfall resort called Robotnik Falls.
- In "Mass Transit Trouble", he sabotaged mass transit systems across Mobius with bombs that would kill all present-and theoretically distant enough that Sonic couldn't save everyone with such time.
- In "Super Robotnik", with his newfound omnipotent superpowers, he vandalizes the ground of Mobius with buildings nearby, freezes Sonic and Tails into a cube before proceeding to throw them both at the frozen wastelands of Mobius, kidnapped all four of the Mobius' World Leaders to keep them trapped (while vandalizing their building and potentially harmed them by throwing the building across the city), stealing candy from 1 thousand and forty two babies around the whole world, and forcing Sonic into a gladiator battle with him in order to save them or Sonic will leave Mobius forever if he loses.
- He also cheated at the games by levitating instead of grabbing the monkey rings, floats and even abuses Sonic by whacking him with an enlarged hand and played baseball to whack Sonic a few feet into the air before harshly falling onto the ground.
- In "Robolympics", he challenged Sonic to compete against him at the Robolympics, where if he wins the most gold medals, he will let the asteroid hit Turtle Town (as well as potentially all over Mobius) and if Sonic wins the most gold medals, he will stop the asteroid. He also tried killing Sonic during the games by attempting to grind Sonic up and magnetize him with a device of his. Even when he lost, Robotnik still tried getting the asteroid to hit Turtle Town despite losing in the games, thus making him a dirty cheater.
- In the "Quest for the Chaos Emerald" saga, he stole and obtained all four Chaos Emeralds so he can become the Supreme High Robotnik; not only did he become giant enough to terrorize Mobius and vandalize everything around him, but the first thing he did with such power is that he sent Sonic and Tails to the big bang to be blown up and not exist anymore, which he did meanwhile he made several Mobians bow down to him and see him as a "Messiah" before Sonic and Tails come back to defeat him.
- Also in the Chaos Emerald Saga, he showcased an invention the Robot-Transmogrifier Ray to transform several innocent people and animals including a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a Pterodactyl, a Whale and Blackbeard into robotic servants that are completely loyal to him whilst having access their full memories and skillsets of their former selves. No method of de-roboticizaiton is ever shown or implied and the aforementioned victims are all left as robots.
- Whilst BlackBeard was a pirate, no villainous traits were shown or mentioned of him prior to him being turned into BlackBot the Pirate by Robotnik, the Chaos Emerald was something he found and buried himself, meaning retrieving wasn't breaking the law.
- In "Baby-Sitter Jitters", he planned to blow up the dam to flood Beaverville and turn it in his own golf and fishing estate. He even shows glee and enjoyment in exploiting kid beavers to use them as bait for Sonic to fall for his hologram that trapped Sonic and Tails into a vent.
- In "Honey, I Shrunk the Hedgehog", he shrunk Sonic, Tails, and a group of miners to become tiny and made them become slaves of Robotnik. He even planned to use Sonic and Tails as "pet food" and swatting them both like insects for defying Robotnik's rules.
- In "Robotnikland", he lured Sonic into a misleading amusement park called Robotnikland (which was disguised as "Sonic Land" before Robotnik revealed to have trapped Sonic in said park). He also intended to kill several Mobians in a roller coaster that led them to a volcano, he has tortured Sonic with a giant pinball machine and attempted blowing up Sonic and friends with giant stales of dynamite disguised as candles in a large birthday cake.
- In "Hero of the Year", he forced Sonic into a trap and caged all of his friends aboard a sinking yacht, intending to leave them to be drowned while he and his henchmen celebrate their crimes they've committed in the past.
- In "Lifestyles of The Sick and Twisted", upon getting angered for being rejected to be featured on a show and becoming popular over Sonic getting the nomination; Robotnik then resorts to kidnapping and chaining Throbbin Screech's niece over a pit of lava for not allowing Robotnik to be on live television.
- Once he got the chance to be live on television, he announces his plans to capture Tails on live television with Throbbin for him to watch, once Robotnik has Tails and Throbbin's niece in Robotnik's possession, Sonic tried to make a fair deal to free the two if Sonic gives himself up to him in cuffs; Robotnik then double-crosses him and has him chained over a pit of lava with Tails and Throbbin's niece.
- In "Sonic is Running", he bribes Wes Weasley into being his campaign manager to create a television advertisement that hypnotizes and brainwashes the townsfolk with "Hypnovision" to make people lash out at anyone who speaks ill of Robotnik, and created several propaganda tapes during a political debate against Henry Walrus.
- In "Sonically Ever After", he created a ray gun to transport Sonic into a world of fairy tales, attempted cooking Sonic and Tails, he also poisoned Tails with a toxic chili dog, he used a magic wand to summon a dragon to make it barbecue Sonic, turns Mobius into his own city, and sent a giant beatnik to crush Sonic.
- In the 1996 Christmas special Sonic's Christmas Blast, it's shown and strongly implied that he managed to conquer Mobius ever since the ending of "Sonically Ever After", which has gone to the point of making his own currency "Robotnik Bucks" and the town is now called Robotropolis (especially since this film appears to juxtapose and blend both elements from AoStH and SatAM into this story such as Sally Acorn appearing in one scene for example), and he also announced to Mobius with replacing Santa Claus by having the real Santa imprisoned with several Swat Bots keeping him guarded in a igloo-like dungeon before Sonic comes in and frees Santa from his cell.
- However, Mobius being restored back to normal is never shown or implied to happen in the slightest despite Robotnik's tree and presents being swapped by Sonic before the latter brought back everything back to several Mobians, this means that he still succeeded at conquering Mobius at the end.
- In Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, he turns several jolly citizens of Beanville into robots to create an army to takeover Mobius. Whilst his full plot is stopped, several Beans including the major character, Hasbean, were all turned into Robots and never shown to be restored to their regular selves besides some beans at the end of the game.
- He physically and verbally abuses Scratch and Grounder, as well as his other robots like Coconuts for their blunders and ineptitude, which happens consistently throughout the show.
- In every single episode in the show, he always expresses his genuine hatred for Sonic, to the point of saying how much he hates Hedgehogs themselves with a fiery passion.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is way too humorous and comedic since his egotistical behavior, furious tendencies, his numerous comedic defeats, and having several genuinely comical lines (as well as being a complete ham) detracts from his evil nature, which is played up far too much for laughs to be Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil. This makes Robotnik hardly taken seriously in the whole show, and it's not helping that he is often very incompetent as well due to such reasons like:
- In episodes like "Sonic Breakout", "Sonically Ever After", "Super Robotnik", the entire "Quest for the Chaos Emeralds" saga, and most especially "Lifestyles of the Sick and Twisted", they all show how he had the potential to kill Sonic and turn Mobius into a hopeless dystopian planet to bend to Robotnik's will, but he never fully uses his mental brilliance and competence to his full advantage in order to do so, but gloats it and toys around with said opportunity; which causes him to get defeated every time. For example, he has a portable gun that can instantly turn anyone it hits into a robot completely loyal to him, but he uses this device very sparingly for some reason.
- In Sonic's Christmas Blast, him replacing Santa Claus and calling himself "Robotnik Claus" on live television is extremely laughable, and his plans for this turn of events like making his minions get all of the presents in Robotropolis (while having Scratch and Grounder force everyone into doing so), while he fakes his act as Robotnik Claus as well as ordering his henchmen, Scratch and Grounder, to capture Sonic as Robotnik's present, is very absurd and aimless in practice.
- His alphabetic list of insults and retorts he provided such as "Nincombots!!" and "You two-tailed two timer!", for example, which are always played for laughs.
- He is somewhat tragic, as he was abused by his criminally insane mother and she usually calls him a complete and utter failure for a "villain" despite his many attempts to please her often backfiring. All of his mother's verbally and physically demeaning behavior towards him for the fact Robotnik hasn't taken over Mobius, seems to have motivated Robotnik into being a dishonest "villain" in the first place. The fact she raised Robotnik to always lie and to be evil in the episode "Zoobotnik" doesn't help much. As such, Robotnik never gets to have a overall happy ending of his own throughout the series despite finally managing to conquer Mobius in "Sonic's Christmas Blast".
- When he nearly got a happy ending in Sonic's Christmas Blast with getting all the presents he ever wanted, Sonic steals all of the gifts back from him and leaves him with nothing but his polka-dot boxers and a naked Christmas tree.
- He also got sexually harassed and assaulted by Katella, a well-endowed good-looking egomaniacal "yandere" type of intergalactic space huntress who immediately fell in love with Robotnik himself and wanted him to be her husband because of being utterly smitten by Robotnik welcoming her to his "expensive magnificent and opulent" abode, which Robotnik has shown to not feel the same way and was pretty much a victim of Katella's relentless lust towards him. And as such, Sonic taking knowledge of Robotnik's predicament was how Sonic pretended to be a damsel of his and fall victim to Katella's elaborate trap, which also allowed him and Tails to escape during their imprisonment, and then Sonic eventually helps Robotnik get out of the predicament he had with Katella by calling Momma Robotnik to interfere a fake wedding Sonic arranged.
- He has shown to have a sympathetic side to him at times.
- Robotnik somewhat cares for his mother, as shown that he wants to please her to be a amazing supervillain despite being genuinely afraid of her for her incredibly abusive and callous nature.
- Despite being an power-hungry sadist and a psychopath, he cares for Fuzzy Wuzzy; his brought-to-life teddy bear Momma Robotnik intended to use so it could kill Sonic, and actually promised Sonic and Tails anything for them (ex. being good) if they wouldn't hurt it and save him from it being possessed; which resulted in Momma Robotnik physically assaulting Robotnik with a umbrella for his treacherous decision.
- He also cared very much for his son Robotnik Junior in the episode "Robotnik, Jr", and raised him to be a deceptive villain in a more earnest and kinder way rather than how Momma Robotnik raised Robotnik to be evil with endless abuse and intimidation tactics.
- In fact, the episode "Sonic the Matchmaker" has Robotnik kidnapping two of his creations Breezy and Robotnik Jr, so he could reprogram them to become brainwashed and not betray Robotnik anymore, even though they escaped from him.
- In the episode "So Long Sucker", he gets a Pet the Dog moment for the fact he cares so much about his pet cockroach BoBo, he in fact cries and hugs a photo he took of him, in memory of him. Meaning there are certain animals he genuinely cares for despite his overwhelming hatred for animals like hedgehogs and turtles.
- For as ruthless and cruel as he tends to be, he can be genuinely polite and civil when he wants to be, and most of his cruelty is counterbalanced by making him something of a fairly laughable goofball. Especially when he has genuinely nice manners to his mother a lot of the time, and is comically thoughtful and cooperative when Sonic uses a disguise on him.
Trivia[]
- As of now, he's currently one of the three only official versions of Robotnik alongside his OVA version and Sonic Cinematic Universe version to be Inconsistently Heinous, as all the others have either failed the Heinous Standards or are too evil to be IH.
- His game version used to be Inconsistently Heinous too as it was thought he was On & Off as well as too comedic, but after he said in Sonic Frontiers that his occasional team-ups with Sonic were pragmatic and the IDW comics (where he was taken extremely seriously) were canonized to the games, making his comedic moments less detracting, so he was changed to Near Pure Evil.
- His design would become a slight basis for his Sonic the Hedgehog television series (SatAM) counterpart] and his design would be reused for his Sonic the Comic counterpart.
- In the same year of 1993, his SatAM counterpart is approved as Pure Evil for being a true threat who is taken seriously and lacks redeeming qualities compared to this version of Robotnik.
- Not only just that, a preproduction page of AoStH implies that the latter was meant to be a form of a prequel to SatAM,[1] but if this was true, it would be rather ambiguous as to how Robotnik suddenly conquered Mobius and changed from being extremely incompetent and silly to more serious and unsettling. Had this been kept to the final version, this version of Robotnik would have been qualified as Pure Evil.
- He is the current icon of the Cleanup template.
