~ Doc Ock to Spider-Man. |
Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, is the secondary antagonist of Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man video game series.
He is the former CEO of Octavius Industries, Peter Parker's science teacher/mentor and a noble scientist who desired to help people, but was driven into villainy by Oscorp founder and his former best friend and Arch-rival Norman Osborn. Octavius eventually becomes the supervillain known as Doctor Octopus, motivated to get his revenge on Norman Osborn and kill Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He is also the founder and leader of the Sinister Six and the former friend and father figure-turned-one of the two archenemies of Peter Parker/Spider-Man (alongside Venom).
He is voiced by William Salyers, who also voiced Rigby in Regular Show.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
Background[]
- Despite Dr. Michaels's warning about GR-27, Otto, alongside Norman Osborn, experimented on a young boy named Martin Li with it, resulting in him developing superpowers and accidentally murdering his parents, turning Martin into Mister Negative. That being said, he was horrified by this outcome.
Marvel's Spider-Man[]
- His impatience to wait for Peter to arrive to help him iron out the kinks of the prosthetics ultimately sealed his fate as this recklessness would cause the accident that gave Osborn the excuse to pull the plug on his research, which drove Otto over the edge out of immense hatred for Norman.
- After descending to villainy, Doctor Octopus caused a prison break and formed the Sinister Six with Mister Negative, Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture and Electro.
- Brutally assaulted Spider-Man as he was in his way. What makes this worse is that not only is Spider-Man actually his former lab partner and close friend, Peter Parker, but Otto had been aware of his secret identity since the beginning of the game and covers up his knowledge by making it seem like he mistook him for only designing Spider-Man's equipment.
- Unleased the Devil's Breath, causing sickness among New York and possibly killing hundreds or thousands of people as a result, an action which directly led to Aunt May's death and leaving Peter without any family, which was the reason Peter later joined the Spider Society in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
- Had the Sinister Six commit several crimes around New York, and he is also the reason for the fire that nearly killed Aunt May, MJ, and Miles.
- His actions of freeing the convicts and starting the destruction around New York was also the reason Spider-Man was branded a "priority target" by Sable International.
- What makes this worse is that this action was also the reason Sable became oppressive in the first place, as they did not begin arresting random people and enforcing martial law until after the breakout.
- In the event Spider-Man found his hideout, he left notes about Mister Negative planning to attack the GR-27 research lab with something called Icarus, simply to get Spider-Man to look around the building until he got near a bunch of bombs, which Otto detonates to kill him. While he respected Mister Negative upon meeting him, he subverted this respect by hitting a weakened Mister Negative away after the latter's failure.
- When Mister Negative failed to kill Spider-Man, Otto deems him useless and knocks him out with his tentacles.
- Threatened Norman Osborn to reveal the "truth", and after Osborn refused, he dropped him off a building.
- Tried to brutally kill Spider-Man, who opposed him for the final time.
- After his defeat, he attempted to blackmail Peter into helping him escape from the authorities by promising he wouldn't reveal his identity, which was the final nail in the coffin for Peter as he realized the Doctor he once knew was gone forever. Even after promising to Peter he would "fix everything", he doesn't show any remorse for his crimes and only cared about not wanting to be locked up.
- Though he states he would cure the city after killing Norman, he also makes it clear that he doesn’t care how many people die from the Devil’s Breath just as long as Norman suffers for everything he’s done first.
- He tries to justify his crimes by passing them off as an attempt to bring Norman to justice, making him seem like an extremist. However, the fact that he is willing to release dangerous criminals to run wild on the streets and infect Manhattan with a deadly disease that could potentially become a global pandemic that could kill millions to billions of people shows he only cared about getting his revenge and treats everyone else as collateral.
- Though it’s stated his arms are negatively affecting his mind, Otto still shows moral agency over his actions as he was willing to kill Peter from the beginning. Not to mention, it’s implied that he was planning his revenge plot long before the neural interface. His moral agency is further reinforced in the sequel, where he is still shown to be just as hateful and selfish even without the neural interface.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]
- Even after 2 years have passed, Otto still hasn’t let go of his hatred towards Osborn, in contrast to Martin Li, who’s taken time to reform and realize the error of his ways.
- He shows no sympathy towards Norman after learning of his son Harry's state, outright saying "good". While he has every right to be mad and hate Norman, this is very cold on Otto's part, especially when Harry has nothing to do with their feud.
- As revealed in one of the two post-credits for the second game, it’s implied that he’s plotting his revenge against Peter for defeating and arresting him, thus subverting his care for Peter. It’s also vaguely hinted that he intends to make Norman join in on his scheme, as he refers to it as: “the final chapter”.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too tragic and too sympathetic to even qualify as Near Pure Evil. As he was once a genuinely kind and benevolent man who wished to use his scientific expertise to help people and better the world, however thanks to Norman Osborn constantly oppressing him, screwing him over and taunting him, as well as his constant failed attempts to cure his own disability and several others, he snapped and became an insane sociopath obsessed with revenge against Norman at all costs, causing the good person he once was to only be replaced with a hateful shadow.
- He is deeply insecure, as he tells Peter that all his life he has felt like a failure and is genuinely happy when his mechanical appendages finally work. Later on, when Norman calls him a "failure," Otto is visibly genuinely hurt and angry by his former best friend's comment and can only appear sad at what he said to him when he attempts to drop Norman to his death.
- Judging by all the equipment for the other members of the Sinister Six, it's likely that he was genuinely going to make good on the promises he made to them. This shows that despite his insanity, Otto is still somewhat an honorable man.
- Regardless of how he feels about Peter and the implication that he's plotting revenge against him, Otto refuses to elaborate on whether or not he knows of his identity as Spider-Man when being confronted by Norman over the subject. This shows that despite everything that's happened between him and his former partner and friend, he still holds some degree of respect for Peter.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the three versions of Doctor Octopus to be Inconsistently Heinous, along with the Sam Raimi version and the original Doctor Octopus.
- Despite Doctor Octopus currently being Inconsistently Heinous, it's possible his status may change in the upcoming third entry in the series, as it's heavily implied that he's planning to take revenge on the Spider-Men.
