NOTE: This article is only about the film version of Doctor Octopus' Tentacles, as their novelization version was not voted Inconsistently Heinous.

Doctor Octopus' Tentacles are the secondary antagonists of the 2004 superhero film Spider-Man 2, the second installment of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, and supporting antagonists in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

They are the A.I. mechanical tentacles of Dr. Otto Octavius, designed by him to aid him during his fusion reactor experiment while keeping them in check with an inhibitor chip. However, when the chip is destroyed, the tentacles get fused into their creator's spine and start controlling Octavius into finishing his experiment at all costs, even if that means endangering all of New York City.

In Spider-Man 2, they were portrayed by four unidentified puppeteers. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, they were portrayed through CGI.

Their Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Them Heinous?[]

  • They killed the doctors operating on Doctor Octavius who wanted to remove the tentacles to stabilize him.
  • They manipulated Otto into completing the fusion reactor by any means necessary, despite Otto not wanting to become a criminal.
  • They convinced Otto to kill Peter and Mary Jane by making him throw a car at their café.
  • They manipulated Otto into committing bank robberies to procure funds to rebuild their reactor.
  • After Peter convinced Otto not to continue with the fusion reactor, the tentacles tried to kill Peter and attempted to continue finishing the reactor, forcing Otto to sacrifice himself.
  • After getting transported into the MCU, the tentacles made Otto attack the Spider-Man of this universe by fighting him on the bridge and attempting to kill several innocent bystanders, including children.
  • They didn't redeem themselves; as the MCU's Spider-Man installed the inhibitor chip and shut off their AI, with Octavius' final words before the chip took effect implying that the arms were angry and defiant to the end at their fate, making it a forced redemption at most.

What Makes Them Inconsistent?[]

  • They had little to no real moral agency, only acting per their programming from Otto to complete the fusion reactor.
  • They had little characterization, except for manipulating Otto.
  • It's hinted that the first massacre they committed upon gaining sentience might have been self-defense from their perspective which colored their worldview going forward, as they'd only just became self-aware of their surroundings and the doctors were in the process of hacking them off of Otto.

Trivia[]

  • In Peter David's novelization of Spider-Man 2, the tentacles are given more personality as what they are saying to Otto is shown on page. Due to their better characterization, the novelization versions were voted as Near Pure Evil, until their proposal was deleted.
