Art is an explosion!
~ Deidara's favorite catchphrase

Deidara is a supporting antagonist in the Naruto anime and manga series. He was a rogue ninja from the Village Hidden in the Stones and the youngest member of the Akatsuki.

He was voiced by Katsuhiko Kawamoto in Japanese, Roger Craig Smith in English (sans "The Promise That Could Not Be Kept" in which he was voiced by Quinton Flynn), and by Jesús Barrero in Latin American Spanish.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He stole the forbidden kinjutsu of his home village as a young shinobi.
  • Prior to working for the Akatsuki, he worked as a bomber for hire and plausibly killed many people.
  • In Akatsuki Hiden: Evil Flowers in Full Bloom, he and Sasori destroyed Gōshō's mansion in a bid to seize the stockpile of Hanasaki clay stored within and killed those who opposed them. Note that destruction they caused being excessive that the rest of Ceramic Village caught in their rampage as well.
  • He captured Gaara to extract him while attempting to blow up his village. He later sat on his corpse during the Akatsuki ritual.
  • He strangled Tobi during their first meeting.
  • In the anime, he forced Tobi to capture the Three-Tails by himself, sadistically enjoying the thought of him struggling against it.
  • He destroyed the entire area within a five mile radius in an attempt to kill Sasuke, even though Tobi was nearby.
  • He insults Sai about his dead brother, Shin.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is treated as too much of a comic relief character, with moments like mocking Gaara with maracas, screaming at the Shinobi Alliance while imprisoned and practically all of his interactions with Tobi. It doesn't help that all of the other Akatsuki members are treated dead seriously, even including Hidan who himself has multiple comedic moments but is treated like a genuine threat.
  • He is genuinely affable among his comrades like Sasori, who he is willing to respect about his point of view on art. Despite his abusive relationship with him, he also cares somewhat for Tobi and apologizes then he thinks he is about to blow him up.
    • He is slightly affable to his enemies too and has a somewhat playful banter with some shinobi during the great war. This is shown with Kurotsuchi.
  • In Akatsuki Hiden: Evil Flowers in Full Bloom, he and Sasori had a Pet the Dog moment in which the two befriended Kanyū for their shared commitment in the art, lamenting how Ceramic Village was forced to forget Hanasaki ceramics in favor of new art as intended by Gōshō, secretly standing up for her when Gōshō mistreated her, and implored her to evacuate lest getting caught in blasts of his C2 Dragon as he attempted to brute force his way through Gōshō's vault which contained more cache of Hanasaki clay.
    • He was also visibly conflicted upon discovering Gōshō's dark secret where he had killed his father Mashō along with his fellow ceramists just so Ceramic Village forget the practice of developing Hanasaki in favor of new art style to ensure its prosperity prior; claiming his prize now means the end of Hanasaki-style, something he never intended to happen. The reason he eventually decided to get through it was because of Sasori's assurance of Hanasaki-style still has a future, a statement that soon proven true when they figured out they had indirectly helped Kanyū in reviving it.
  • He respected Gaara enough to allow him to move the enormous sand he used to protect his village into the desert before kidnapping him, even going so far as to admiringly call him noble.
  • His second death is played with mild sympathy as him and Kankurō indirectly smile at each other after he makes a joking "boom" sound.

Trivia[]

  • In the Road to Ninja movie, him along with the rest of the Akatsuki help Naruto against Menma. Though this is in an alternate universe and not canon.
