| ~ Dagur attempting to use Toothless as his death machine to destroy Berk. |
Dagur the Deranged is a major character in the DreamWorks Dragons series, a part of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. He serves as a minor antagonist in Riders of Berk, the main antagonist of Defenders of Berk and the first season of Race to the Edge before becoming a supporting antagonist in Season 2 and then ultimately becoming a supporting protagonist from every season onwards.
He is the barbaric and ruthless Chief of the Berserker Tribe upon his father, Oswald the Agreeable, getting himself lost, leaning on the rumors he killed him to appear as a strong successor. He becomes the former archenemy of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the son of the chief of the Hooligan Tribe, Stoick the Vast, who Dagur tried to wage war on to satisfy his wanton bloodlust. Eventually finding his long lost sister, Heather, Dagur eventually grows a soft side and redeems, becoming an ally to the Dragon Riders.
He was voiced by David Faustino.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General/Background[]
- Despite having multiple comedic moments, his actions are played seriously and horrifically in-universe, and most of his comedic moments simply highlight how sadistic and twisted he was.
- He set his sister Heather adrift, leaving her orphaned.
- Bullied Hiccup, Astrid and Fishlegs as a child, even tossing knives at Hiccup for fun and tossing Fishlegs into a cramped cage, feeding him rotten fish heads and having made attempts on his life even before they were even enemies out of sheer sadism. It proves he was already agressive and mean before the serie.
- Frequently attempted to kill at least one of his men and sacrifice them solely because he can.
- While the franchise has high Heinous Standards, Dagur still stands out for his twisted and sadistic acts, planning to kill anyone who weren't even his own enemies, that too with attempting to spark a massively deadly war, wiping out an entire village that gives him a very notable kill count and his personal villainy against Hiccup and his friends since their youngest age, and as a result, Dagur's wanton sadistic bloodlust gives him a huge visceral edge to make him stand out.
Riders of Berk/Defenders of Berk[]
- Captures Barf and Belch and attempted to kill it and use its blood to sign a peace treaty with Berk simply because he can.
- Personally went a hunting game, killing many dragons for sport.
- Upon finding out about how Berk became more gentle on dragons and started training them, he uses this as pretext to wage a massive war against the island.
- He makes multiple attempts to destroy it and make it defenseless:
- Using a catapult to capture dragons and their riders to cripple its defenses as he wipes the island out.
- Having Johann sell scrap metals containing a Smothering Smokebreath's nest to steal all of Berk's metal to leave them defenseless as he attempts to wipe them all out.
- Plants Dragon Root, a plant that will drive dragons feral and insane and make them lethally aggressive, to send Berk's dragons to a violent frenzy that will kill any human and dragon on sight and lay waste to Berk, being the most twisted tactic yet.
- Even before that, Hiccup always knew that Dagur wanted to destroy peace.
- He makes multiple attempts to destroy it and make it defenseless:
- He threatened to cut off one of his own minions legs (who was actually Tuffnut passing himself off as a minion but doesn't change what happens) for simply annoying him. Had he not impressed him with his poetry, Dagur would've followed through the threat.
- He betrayed Alvin the Treacherous and electrocuted him to near death with a Skrill. He then forced Savage and the rest of the Outcasts to join him by threatening to kill them if they refused.
- That leads Alvin to redeem himself and was furious against him.
- He abducted a weakened Stoick and threatened to kill him if Hiccup didn't deliver Toothless to him. Astrid knew he won't respect the agreement, leading Hiccup to team up with Alvin in order to foil him.
- He attempted to enslave Toothless and use him as a weapon to terrorize the Archipelago after destroying Berk. He also planned to kill Toothless and collected his skull as trophy.
- Once captured by Alvin, he begs Hiccup to save him. But Hiccup doesn't get fooled, knowing he wants to retry to kill them, and his defeat and imprisonment was played for satisfaction.
Race to the Edge[]
- At some point, he slaughtered his own sister Heather's entire adoptive village, leaving her as the sole survivor, all while having knowledge that Heather was his sister.
- While breaking out of jail, he badly injured multiple guards. He even injured the one who let him out, stating he hates traitors.
- Tells Savage that he is gonna betray and kill Ryker Grimborn and wipe out the Dragon Hunters to claim the Dragon Eye for himself.
- While done heroically, Dagur threatened to kill Ryker if he laid a hand on Heather.
- Even after his redemption, he didn't show remorse for all of his past crimes. He also has multiple questionable actions:
- He's still aggressive and violent, even if it's not as bad as it used to be.
- He recklessly charges into battle and rarely shows respect to his opponents and it nearly got him killed.
- He purposefully gets Snotlout's name wrong and hypocritically didn't like being called nicknames.
- He attacked a merchant for info on Heather until Hiccup stopped him.
- He's still aggressive and violent, even if it's not as bad as it used to be.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He cares for his family. Unlike what Defenders of Berk heavily indicated and the way he disliked his father, the rumors of Dagur hating and killing his father were not true, and Dagur genuinely cared for him and was heartbroken and blamed his sadism and negligence for not bothering to search for him when he found out that Oswald died fighting for the dragons in Vanaheim. Upon finding out Heather was his long-lost sister, Dagur cared for her and threatened to kill Ryker if he laid a finger on her and when Viggo Grimborn has her captured and ordered him to execute her, Dagur betrays him and frees her and her dragon Windshear.
- Despite his past mistreatment of Hiccup and his attempts to murder him, he considers Hiccup part of his family and a brother, even if this is almost always quite one-sided.
- After his redemption, he regrets his attempted murder and helps him and Toothless, as well as his friends, and continues to call him brother, even though Hiccup often rejects this.
- Despite his past mistreatment of Hiccup and his attempts to murder him, he considers Hiccup part of his family and a brother, even if this is almost always quite one-sided.
- He had insecurities that were played up heavily for sympathy after his redemption, as it's clear he felt misunderstood and unloved by everyone, and it's even implied that he felt the same way about his own father.
- Because of this, he was genuinely hurt when Hiccup and Heather turned against him, as he thought they were the first people to understand him and see him for who he was, as he truly loved the latter, especially despite all the pain he caused.
- Ultimately, his horrific behavior stemmed from gaining respect from others while simultaneously hiding the broken and damaged man he was from everyone.
- Although it doesn't justify his actions, he is still tragic because, as mentioned above, he felt unloved and misunderstood by everyone, insecure, and that no one would help him. It has also been confirmed that he was bullied and harassed by Anson the Abominable as a child, which likely further reinforced his destructive tendencies, and all of these factors are the reasons for his development or still influence him. He also felt self-loathing for his actions and behavior.
- However, characters such as Hiccup, Snotlout, and Fishlegs, who were his former enemies, later showed sympathy for him and praised him for his efforts to be a better person after his redemption.
- He is capable of showing genuine respect to others, including his enemies, even in his villainous days.
- He genuinely respected Hiccup as an adversary, praising him and his dragon riders. He even told Ryker that he and his people should never be underestimated.
- Once, when Tuffnut was undercover as a fake exile on Exile Island, Dazu was initially annoyed by his smacking, but later, taken in by his humor, allowed him to stay, although he threatened to smacking him.
- He also respected Snotlout after his redemption, for his bravery in helping to stop the Push on Beserker Island, even though he often mispronounced his name and was sometimes violent towards him.
- Although he initially only found Gustav useful for his connection to Hiccup and his knowledge of the Dragon's Eye, and even wanted to get rid of him, after his redemption, he saw Gustav as a great fighter, made him his apprentice, and even believed his lies, only to be disappointed when they turned out not to be true.
- He also began to respect the people of Berk and their leader, Stoick.
- He ultimately redeems himself after Season 2's finale of Race to the Edge by calming down and learning self control. After this, he is willing to atone for his crimes by helping Berk.
- He also wanted to make amends with his sister Heather, helping her search for her father and saving her several times. In return, he became a better tribal leader, learning to care more for his own people.
- His supposed sacrifice was played for sympathy since Heather cried after finding out about his supposed death.
- He even later married Mala, the queen of the protectors of the wing, and participated with her and the other dragon riders in the final battle for the King of the Dragons.
- He also wanted to make amends with his sister Heather, helping her search for her father and saving her several times. In return, he became a better tribal leader, learning to care more for his own people.
