“ | I used to be a real C.I.T. | „ |
~ Courtney's famous and insufferable catchphrase. |
“ | Don’t bother fixing your glasses, you won't be around long enough to matter. | „ |
~ Courtney to Cameron. |
Courtney is a major antagonist in the Canadian animated franchise Total Drama.
She is a perfectionist and competitive girl who joins the titular reality TV show to win the one million dollars prize. However, while most of her fellow teammates and campers show interest in socializing and befriending each other in addition to competing for the million, Courtney prioritizes the million over anything, even love and friends. She is the arch-enemy of Gwen and Duncan.
She was voiced by Emilie-Claire Barlow.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- Even before transitioning to a villain, she was a very arrogant and egocentric individual, as she always believed herself to be in the right and acts like everyone else is at fault when they suffer from the consequences of her own actions.
- She wouldn’t mind risking others’ lives if it means winning the prize money. She seemingly cares for her friends but in reality, she is ready to do very bad things to them if it’s for her benefit and this dangerous behavior she has is shown to be consistent and goes beyond Total Drama standards despite her minimal resources.
- She is a contestant that is not truly friendly to anyone anymore unlike before, she was even abusive towards her boyfriend Duncan, as seen with the 32 page book, which contains orders like the one that forced him to compliment Courtney every 1 hour, she even injured him for fun many times, especially in One Million Bucks, B.C when she gave him a severe hit to win immunity, badly injuring him.
- In "Haute Camp-ture", after finding out that Harold rigged the votes to have her eliminated, she threatened to wring his neck once she caught him, and picked up a lamppost to attack him with. When Ezekiel told her to calm down, she hit him in the face.
- In "Total Drama, Drama, Drama, Drama Island", she threatens Cody, DJ, Tyler and Owen to fall to their deaths if they do not give her the money.
- In "Dial M for Merger", Courtney was the only one that was able to escape a tower that is supposedly about to explode, and she was willing to leave everyone to die unless they all accept to split the prize money with her. She only brought everyone with her when they all accepted her deal of splitting the prize money with her if they were to win.
- In "The Princess Pride", she manipulates and seduces Justin only to throw him of a tower with no remorse only to win immunity which injured his body and could have killed him.
- In the second season, where she is the main antagonist, she forced Chris thanks to her corrupt lawyers to help her cheat during the challenges. This caused Owen to be eliminated while he needed money to help his family.
- In "The EX-Files", she threw an injured Tyler off a plane for no reason, not caring if he'll be able to open his parachute, and although he was able to, it caused him to meet aliens after being pushed and cause him to be severely electrocuted and more injured.
- This extends to animals as well, as she throws a beaver to die in Moon Madness.
- At one point, in the same episode when she is saved by Gwen against a feral animal, she lies to Gwen saying that she would have done the same if their roles had to be switched, but in reality, if their roles were switched, she would not save her to have higher chances to win the prize money, even saying it clearly to the viewers.
- In "Saving Private Leechball", she betrayed the Heroic Hamsters so she can avoid competing in the dangerous challenge and she even uses a badly injured and starving Sam without energy as a human shield to protect herself from leeches, even considering it as normal as an excuse. Not only she's been exposed as a fraud she's been sent to the Villainous Vultures team for her actions.
- In "The Obsta-Kill Course", she helps Scott getting up after an injury, but when he falls into a poll full of piranhas just in front of her, Courtney mocked him and left him being tortured, not caring if he will stay alive.
- In "No One Eggspects The Spanish Opposition" she was picking on Cameron, telling him he’s too weak to survive in the competition, so she can scare him and get him to the big toilet, while she knows he is mentally unstable.
- In “Sundae Muddy Sundae” she bragged about her plan to treat the other contestants as stepping stones in order to win, planning to bring Scott to the finale so he would throw the challenge and win her the prize, and to eliminate Gwen after she had spent the whole competition trying to make amends with her, proving her friendship towards Gwen was fake and all of her efforts were for nothing.
- She felt no remorse after Mal exposed her chart and caused the others to rightfully turn against her, calling them "sensitive". When Gwen refused to help her she blamed her for "not being impressed with her genius" and remarked that it was no wonder that she had a hard time keeping friends (even though she was rightfully angry towards Courtney not being a genuine friend in the first place). While she did try to apologize to Gwen later, she only did it to remain in the competition.
- She mocked the other contestants during the challenge, taunting Scott for falling behind on the mountain and left Zoey to fend for herself in the crocodile-filled swamp because she rejected her offer, even though she was understandably mad at her for betraying Gwen and everyone else.
- As her sundae became inedible over the course of the challenge, she tried to feed it to the starving interns, having no concern for their health and safety (and even saying they should be thanking her). When Chris changed the rules so the interns wouldn't get the sundaes, she attempted to give it to Scott instead.
- One can argue that she started off as an easy-going and decent person in the first season, even showing standards at times such as when she is disgusted and stands up for Harold against Duncan and Geoff or when and is somewhat okay in the third season as well, but she loses most of her humanity and redeeming qualities when she comes back in the fifth season and starts to risk more lives and is much more sadistic than she was in the past, hence subverting her former standards and friendly nature for the prize money.
- While she was cheated on by Duncan with Gwen, it does not make her tragic nor a scapegoat as she makes it clear that she is willing to sacrifice people that had nothing to do with her “tragedy” which is more depraved than anything that ever happened to her. Her risking and bargaining lives for the money was already present long before being cheated on as seen in multiple episodes in season 1 and 2, therefore saying she became evil because of this is false. Not to mention she also abused Duncan before (badly injuring him as well).
- Even if she cried due to being betrayed by Duncan and Gwen and that she accepted Gwen’s apology, she subverts everything as she merely saw it later as an opportunity to manipulate her then ditch her to continue her goals to win the money that she had since season 1, showing that she stopped seeking acceptance or apologies from her but rather her goals.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- Just like Chris and Chef, she’s an on & off villain, as not all of her actions are villainous.
- Her behaviour isn't always played out too seriously, as there are comedic moments that she has as well, just like Chef and Chris.
- She can be capable of feeling genuine love at times. As she genuinely wished to form a relationship with Duncan or Scott, even by season 5, where she blushes to the viewers. However, that doesn't make her protective as her priority is still the money and is capable to ditch them for it when confronted to make a choice.
