No! You listen! The second I died, everyone forgot about me! And you, Barry, the man I sacrificed my life for, you thanked me by stealing my fiancé! But now, I have a chance to change that. If I choose the crystal, maybe I could be the hero. I could get the girl, and the family I deserve.
~ Eddie Thawne/Cobalt Blue to Barry Allen/The Flash.

Edward "Eddie" Thawne, also known as Dr. Malcolm Gilmore and Cobalt Blue, is a major protagonist turned final antagonist of the TV Series The Flash, serving as the central protagonist of Season 1, a posthumous character in Season 2 and 3, a minor character in Season 8 and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Red Death) of Season 9.

He was once a heroic CCPD detective, boyfriend of Iris West and member of Team Flash that famously sacrificed himself to erase his descendant Eobard Thawne from existence. Years later, however, Eddie gets resurrected by the Negative Speed Force and snaps, becoming its new avatar after believing everything he'd previously done was for nothing.

He was portrayed by Rick Cosnett.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He embraces the power of the Negative Speed Force and becomes Cobalt Blue to kill Barry Allen/The Flash and destroy the Speed Force.
    • After Barry points out this will annihilate existence, Eddie reveals he was counting on it in order to remake it in his image.
  • He resurrects his original descendant Eobard Thawne, Zoom, Savitar and Godspeed, all the previous speedster Big Bads Team Flash has faced, to massacre the rest of Team Flash.
    • He did this even though how unstable all of them are, with an ungrateful Eobard possibly planning to backstab him and the others later on to kill Flash personally as he felt entitled to do.
  • He takes a bunch of baristas hostage in order to blackmail Barry into letting Eddie kill him lest he kill them all.
  • Sends all the other revived speedsters back to their mostly lethal fates (though they all deserved it) after Jay Garrick steals his speed and absorbs their speed.
  • He brutally beats Barry to a pulp and nearly kills him with his bare hands.
  • Despite the high Heinous Standards of the Arrowverse, Eddie passes it by attempting to destroy existence shortly after becoming a villain. There's also the fact that he was dead for most of The Flash and its fellow shows, in addition that villains like Reverse-Flash and Zoom had more time to commit their crimes even if they also attempted to commit omnicide and destroy existence respectively.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He's played far too sympathetically to be either PE or NPE. Within the span of literally two days, he found out his entire life as "Malcolm Gilmore" was a lie, his sacrifice didn't end Eobard and he was forgotten to history as Eobard stated, Barry got the life he always wanted and Iris never really loved him. All this plus the Negative Speed Force's manipulations understandably caused Eddie to snap and become a villain in order to rewrite reality where he was the hero and get the life he's always wanted to find meaning.
  • He was friends with Detective Korber and regretted being the unwitting cause of her death.
  • He showed an honorable side as he didn't really want to kill the baristas and genuinely promised to spare them if Barry gave himself up.
  • He deeply loved Iris till the end.
  • He redeems himself by destroying the NSF's sentience and taking full control of its power, committing to working with Barry Allen to find coexistence as the avatars of opposing forces and stating he was happy for Barry and Iris finally having a child, newborn Nora.
