I believe that we have a soul. So I want to fulfill my dead friend's wish... to wreak havoc.
~ Chrollo Lucilfer to Neon Nostrade.

Chrollo Lucilfer is one of the main antagonists of the manga/anime series Hunter x Hunter.

He is the one of the founding members and leader of the Phantom Troupe, a group of thirteen infamous Nen User thieves known for stealing as much as possible, as well as wrecking havoc on the innocents. He is the arch-nemesis of both Kurapika and Hisoka Morow.

In Japanese, he was voiced by Yoshikazu Nagano in the 1999 anime and Mamoru Miyano in the 2011 anime. In English, he was voiced by Richard Meen in the 1999 anime and by Robbie Daymond (who also voiced Goro Akechi from Persona 5) in the 2011 anime.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He is the leader of the Phantom Troupe, who are outlaws that commit theft and murder.
  • He and his Troupe massacred the entire Kurta clan, even torturing some of their loved ones so they could obtain their scarlet eyes. This event caused Kurapika to go on a quest for revenge, making Chrollo responsible for his suffering.
    • While it is implied the massacre was due to the Kurta clan wringing Meteor City (based on the note they left at the scene of the crime), it is still brutal and one of the worst acts out of any character in the series.
  • In Yorknew, he had the Troupe kill everyone at the Auditorium so they could steal everything up for auction.
  • He manipulated Neon Nostrade into giving him her fortune and then stole her ability, and then he knocked her unconscious.
  • He killed multiple assassins, one of whom he had eaten alive with indoor fish, which was tortuous as he could not feel the pain of death until he deactivated the ability.
  • When composing the requiem for Uvogin, he had the troupe murder all the police and 2,000 mafia members guarding the building.
  • He hired Illumi to kill the Ten Dons to get Silva and Zeno to stop fighting him.
  • He fakes his death along with 5 other members, and he steals all the merchandise for the auction, leaving fake copies of them for the auction.
  • He takes Gon and Killua hostage.
  • He purposefully avoids answering Kurapika’s questions about the Kurta Massacre to upset him.
  • During his fight with Hisoka, he stabs the Judge with Shalnark's Antenna to take control of him and then blows him up with the sun and moon symbols.
  • He throws civilians at Hisoka during their fight and then blows the stadium, which kills and injures many people.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is very tragic, as he grew up in Meteor City, which not only was a place where trash was dumped and people were abandoned but also was subject to child kidnappings by the mafia. Despite all of this, Chrollo was still a cheerful and optimistic child. This all changed when his friend Sarasa went missing and he found her in a bodybag cut into pieces with a note that contained things so traumatic that Chrollo refused to translate it. This destroyed Chrollo’s innocence and convinced him to seek revenge and strive to protect his city by becoming a villain that the outside world would fear to keep the Mafia and anyone else who would threaten his home away.
  • He cares greatly for his fellow troupe members and friends, as he grew up with most of them as children and they were originally going to be a troupe of actors. Even in the present, he always treats them well, is seen celebrating his successes with them, and mourns his lost comrades (like Shalnark and Kortopi). He was especially close with Uvogin, and he originally wanted him to be their leader, only for everyone to vote for Chrollo instead, and Chrollo sheds a tear when he finds out he dies and performs a requiem for him. The death of Sarasa (his childhood friend) shook him up badly and is his driving force for his current actions.
  • He is genuinely affable to others despite his ruthless nature, even to enemies like Zeno.
  • He is a well-intentioned extremist as he only became a villain to protect the people of Meteor City, which still holds true despite his current actions as he gives the money they get during heists to Meteor City and had the Phantom Troupe save the city from the Chimera Ants.
  • Although he doesn’t display remorse for his actual crimes, he has regrets about becoming a killer because he knows it wouldn’t make Sarasa happy and states that if he ever saw her again, he would apologize to her with everything he has.

Trivia[]

  • Previously, he was considered Near Pure Evil, but it was later decided that IH was more fitting for him due to being well-intentioned and being too tragic for NPE, which was assisted by his full backstory being revealed.
