Inconsistently Heinous Wiki

Greetings. I am (name given by the player). Thank you. Your power awakened me from death. My "human soul." My "determination." They were not mine, but YOURS. At first, I was so confused. Our plan had failed, hadn't it? Why was I brought back to life? ...You. With your guidance. I realized the purpose of my reincarnation. Power. Together, we eradicated the enemy and became strong. HP. ATK. DEF. GOLD. EXP. LV. Every time a number increases, that feeling... That's me.

"<Name>." Now. Now, we have reached the absolute. There is nothing left for us here. Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next.

~ Chara introduces themselves at the end of a Genocide Route.
No...? Hmmm... How curious. You must have misunderstood. SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL?
~ Chara deciding to destroy the world anyways if the player chooses otherwise

Chara, also known as the Fallen Human, is the overarching antagonist of the 2015 indie RPG Undertale.

The first human to fall into the Underground, Chara originally lived with the Dreemurrs upon falling into Mt. Ebbot. However, one day, they got an idea that would unintentionally start Asgore's declaration of war on humanity: To free the monsters from the Barrier. To this end, they sacrificed themselves so Asriel could absorb their SOUL and get six human SOULs from the surface. However, Asriel ended up getting killed by humans, putting an end to Chara's plans. This would indirectly lead to Asgore declaring war on humanity, and Asriel becoming Flowey.

According to several characters, Chara's personality mirrors the protagonist's in the Pacifist Route, with both being described as a beacon of hope for the monsters trapped underground. A human SOUL with the power of determination can, in Chara's own words, awaken them from death. Frisk's behavior also influences Chara's, with good deeds bringing about their salvation, while evil deeds in the Genocide Run prove that the purpose of their reincarnation was power.

The game is rather vague on Chara and their character, but upon inspection, much can be found about their character through narration and how they are described and thought of by the monsters. The stuff known about Chara is not that much, with even their gender and their life before living with the Dreemurr family being unknown, and a lot is left up to speculation.

Their Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Them Heinous?[]

  • They devised a plan to get seven human SOULS in order to break the Barrier, which would have most likely required killing several people which resulted in their and Asriel's demise.
  • In the Genocide Route, they directly support the player in slaughtering monsters, including their family members (Toriel, Asgore and Flowey), to gain power.
  • It's heavily implied they are the one who deals the killing blow to Sans, Flowey, and Asgore, not the player.
  • They end up destroying the world at the end of a Genocide Route, and after doing so, will take Frisk's SOUL in exchange for restoring it, permanently ruining the timeline. They also mention going to invade other worlds to continue their rampage.
  • The player is forced to give Frisk's SOUL to Chara, as this is the only way to keep playing the game again; Otherwise, they will be stuck in a pitch black void with nothing except the sound of howling wind.
  • If one would finish the Genocide Route once again, they would destroy the world again, though they express disgust at the idea of doing so.
  • Upon completing a Soulless True Pacifist Route (A True Pacifist Route after a Genocide Route), it is heavily implied that Chara, with the Barrier broken, will slaughter numerous monsters and humans.
  • Chara's overall actions caused the events of Undertale to happen, as their and Asriel's death would fuel Asgore to become villainous while Asriel himself would reincarnate as the evil Flowey.

What Makes Them Inconsistent?[]

  • While Asriel does state they weren't "the greatest person,” Chara is still way too enigmatic as a character to qualify for anything but Inconsistently Heinous. Their backstory and the nature of their actions before death are heavily left up to interpretation. New evidence and lore provided in the newsletter puts them in more of a sympathetic light as in the letter Asriel states that Chara yearned to become invincible so that "nothing can hurt anyone anymore.” This combined with Asgore's statement that they had a "feeling of hope" in their eyes, which however, has presents their character less of a psychopathic manipulator who used the Dreemurr family for their genocidal goals and more of a sympathetic anti-villain who loved their adoptive family and was genuinely trying to help the monster race through their actions. However this evidence only concerns them when they were alive and doesn't quite explain why they were willing to contribute to the destruction of the world post-reincarnation.
  • Regardless of their morality, they are affably evil as shown by their polite and sophisticated way of speaking to the player at the end of the Genocide Run. While being polite and sophisticated does not make a character affably evil by themselves (seeing how many faux-affably evil characters can be that way), the way they encourage the player to try another route besides the genocide one despite saying that they will always help the player “eradicate the enemy and become strong” does indicate their politeness is genuine. Additionally, their encouragement to take "another path" should your choose to do a second Genocide Run reinforces this.
  • They have standards as they call out the player for thinking they are beyond consequences should they return to the world they destroyed after the first genocide run. They are also against putting one world in a state of endless destruction, as shown if you commit another Genocide Route. Even if it's mostly because they want to move on to another world and claim more victims, they explicitly say the player has a "perverted sentimentality,” and outright suggest choosing a less violent route if the player really wants to play the game again.
  • The newsletter published on the game's 9th anniversary featured a letter from Asriel, where he explains that Chara's favourite number is 9 behind there isn't a higher number than that, and if "everything gets high enough" then nothing can hurt you, or anyone else. This heavily implies that not only was Chara abused during their life on the surface, but that they simply seek to protect themselves and their loved ones; at least in life. How their change for the worse in the Genocide Run impacted these motives is unknown, but at the bare minimum it still applies to the Neutral and True Pacifist versions of Chara.
