Queen Cersei Lannister is one of the main antagonists of the television series Game of Thrones. At the beginning of the series she is the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She is the daughter of Lord Tywin Lannister, twin sister and lover of Ser Jaime Lannister, and the older sister and arch-nemesis of Tyrion Lannister. She is the wife of King Robert I Baratheon and mother of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen, who are all incest-born children. She is also the primary archenemy of House Stark, specially Ned Stark, Sansa Stark and less to Arya Stark.

Cersei is both loved and hated by the fans of the series for her complex but also ruthless and merciless nature.

She was portrayed by Lena Headey, who also played Morgana in Tales of Arcadia, and Evil-Lyn in Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

Her Evil Ranking

What Makes Her Heinous?

In General

  • She blames her brother Tyrion for her mother's death during birth, even he was only a little baby. It is implied that she also punched him in his penis until he started crying.
  • It is said that when she was a child she ordered her guards to beat another girl who had stolen a pearl almost until she lost an eye.
  • While she didn't intend for the War of the Five Kings to happen (Petyr Baelish is the person who set everything into motion) Cersei still shares responsibility: She cheated on her husband and pretended that Jaime's children are actually his which later leads to a succession crisis when her secret is discovered. She also refuses to leave King's Landing when Ned Stark offers her to do so, but instead stays and by killing her husband, arresting Ned and not stopping Joffrey when he orders his execution, she further deteriorates the situation. (Though it should be acknowledged that this is a prime example of the sexism Cersei faces because the only reason why in her case infidelity is punishable by death and she has to hide the fact that she has a relationship outside her marriage is because of the sexist laws of her society.)
  • Psychologically abused her brother Jamie and tries to persuade him to kill her brother and finally almost kills him at the hands of the Mountain, even she didn't order this at last.
  • She educates Joffrey to be mistrustful against anyone outside of their family which makes her partially responsible for how he turned out.

Season 1

  • After Joffrey was bitten by direwolf after he teased Arya Stark, Cersei wanted to punish her and to kill her direwolf, and when the wolf went missing, she ordered her husband to kill another direwolf, which Ned had to do himself.
  • Asks for Robert to punish Ned after Tyrion was taken captive by his wife, lying that Ned drunkenly attacked Jaime and pressured Robert so he would do so.
  • She killed her husband, Robert Baratheon in mysteriously way, she gives him wine (by her cousin) during boar's hunt, which makes him drunk and causes him to get seriously injured and later die.
  • She caused Ned's men deaths, arrested him for a treason he didn't commit and allowed Joffrey to execute him even though she could have stopped the execution.

Season 2

  • During the War of the Five Kings, she encourages the city guard to close the city to asylum seekers.
  • Threatened on Petyr Baelish's life becoase he implying on her childs true. Also ordered him to find and bring Arya to her.
  • Took Ros hostage and had her beaten in order to control Tyrion.
  • Executed several people who were attempting to escape from the Battle of Blackwater Bay.
  • Shocks Sansa and other women when she brings Ser Ilyn Payne into their safe room, with his goal of getting them killed before Stannis can free them.
  • In the same battle she punch Lancel on his open wound from a stuck arrow, which almost got him killed.

  • When Joffrey is poisoned to death, she blames Tyrion for the murder withot proof and even asks Jaime to kill him before the trial. She also blames Sansa on Joffrey murder (again withot proof) and tries to find her to execute her.
  • After Gregor Clegane is fatally injured, she asked Qyburn to resurrect him and perform experiments on him, in order to harm her enemies. The experiments Kyburn performs are unethical and cause torture for Gregor.

Season 5

  • Arrested the high septon of King's Landing to satisfy the High Sparrow.
  • Armed the Faith Militant, not caring about their oppression and arrests against other people, so long as they arrest Margaery.
    • for this she also ordering Petyr Baelish to give her one of his male whore for testify against Loras, what cuase him to severe torment and also cuase to arrest Margaery.
  • After she was taken as a prisoner of the sparrows, she promised Septa Unella positions of power, and when she refused, Cersei threatened her with death.

  • She blew up the Sept of Baelor to avoid her trial and eventual execution which resulted in mass destruction and hundreds of dead people. The fact that her uncle and cousin were inside the Sept and she still decided to do it, makes it even worse.
    • becoase his wife was killed she cuase her son, Tommen to commit suicide, what also make her became the queen. she even refuesed to talk about this suicide with Jaime.
  • She commanded the zombified Mountain to brutally torture Septa Unella for at least days as revenge for the later parading Cersei naked through the streets of King's Landing.

  • asking Jaime should she need punish Bronn becoase he Helped arrange a meeting with Tyrion.
  • She tricked Daenerys Targaryen that she would support her with an army against the threat of the White Walkers only to go back on her word, not caring that the entire North might be devastated by the White Walkers if she doesn't send reinforcements.
    • If that's not enough she also makes sure that Yauron takes his men to get her a personal army including elephants, While the entire kingdom is threatened by white moves. When Jamie hears this he is shocked that she didn't even tell him about her plan.
    • Her actions were not only shocking but made the important task for which many people were killed and even a dragon north of the wall, much more gloomy.
  • When Jaime disgusted with her plot left her, she was nearly going to execute him, hypocritically claims that he wants to disobey an order to "fight alongside her enemies".

Season 8

  • She sends Bronn with a task to assassinate her two brothers, Jaime and Tyrion.
  • Before the final battle begins, Cersei executes the captured Missandei to spite Daenerys. She does this even when she knows it is the start of a deadly war.
    • Cersei's actions greatly influenced Daenerys' downfall.
  • She uses many of the common people of King's Landing as meat shields to dissuade Daenerys from attacking, risking the lives of many.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?

  • She displays some standards by showing disgust at the actions of other characters. For example, when Jaime pushes an 10-year-old Bran from a tower, Cersei has an argument with him over this. She is also disgusted when her son, Joffrey, starts commits atrocities and admits that he is a monster. When Joffrey intends to execute Ned, she does try to dissuade him for a moment but then she decides to allow it to happen because she doesn't want to ruin her son's public image.
  • There is a small moment where she displays a little honor. After Ned gives her a chance to escape with her children from the city before he reports to Robert that she had been cheating on him, Cersei tells him that because he warned her and gave her a chance to run away with her children, she would also allow him to go back to Winterfell with his life if he kneels to Joffrey and swears fealty to him, but Ned doesn't do it and he ends up dead for this reason. There is no indication she wouldn't have kept her word to allow Ned to leave if Ned had agreed to kneel before Joffrey and tries to dissuade Joffrey from executing him, telling him that this is madness.
  • She loves her family members except for Tyrion (more specifically, her children, her brother and lover, Jaime, her father, Tywin and her mother, Joanna). She is very protective of her children, doesn't want them to die and constantly fears for their safety (you will learn why later on).
    1. When her son, Joffrey dies she breaks down over his corpse and cries and then she stays with his corpse and mourns it for days. Even though she admits that he is a monster, she still loves him unconditionally.
    2. When Tyrion sends her daughter, Myrcella, to Dorn without her permission and starts threatening him. She even breaks down into tears. Cersei later breaks down over her corpse and claims that she was an innocent being unlike herself and calls herself a monster.
    3. She loves her son, Tommen, and cries out of joy when she sees him for the first time after her imprisonment by the Faith Militant. When Tommen is about to go to the Sept of Baelor, Cersei stops him because she doesn't want him to die.
    4. She also loves incestiously Jaime. When he leaves her to fight on Daenerys's side, Cersei threatens that he would execute him if he attempts to leave her and when he does leave, she can't bring herself to do it. Later, she orders her assassination but this is subverted because when she sees him in her final moments, she goes to him and hugs him and the two of them die together.
    5. She loves her father as she wants his respect, constantly thinks about what he would do and is sad when he dies.
    6. She loves her mother. She blames her younger brother, Tyrion, for "killing" her mother because this is what she saw from her father. She also mentions to Sansa that when she was a little girl she prayed to the Gods to give her mother back.
    7. She loves her unborn child and when she realizes that she is about to die, she begs Jaime to help her and cries that she doesn't want her child to die.
    8. She had a miscarriage at one point which made her feel saddened by the loss of her child.
  • She has a genuine tragedy that still holds up. She lost her mother at a very young age, was forced to live in her brother's shadow and see how they are treated differently and suffer other injustices because of her gender and received a prophecy which foretold the deaths of all her kids. She forced to marry Robert, who didn't love her because he still lamented the loss of his love, Lyanna which made Cersei feel rejected. She was also abused by Robert on some occasions, and he once hit her so hard that she received a huge bruise on one of her cheeks and she has to keep her love relationship with Jaime secret from everyone or else she, Jaime and all their kids would be executed. All of these things are played for sympathy by the story.
  • She is capable of feeling remorse. At one point, she calls herself a monster, she goes to Catelyn to calm her down after Catelyn's son is in coma partially because she feels bad over the fact that her brother, Jaime, was the one who pushed Bran from the tower and during the time when she realizes how bad Joffrey has become.
  • She is played for sympathy in a lot of scenes as the above examples show. During her Walk of Shame, where she is paraded naked through the streets of King's Landing, the scene is portrayed as an "Alas, Poor Villain" moment. During her death scene, she begs Jaime to save her and cries that she doesn't want for her or her unborn child to die and the two of them hug while they are buried beneath the collapsing Red Keep and the scene is obviously portrayed as another "Alas, Poor Villain" moment. Sad music is also played when Tyrion finds Cersei and Jaime's bodies.
