Listen. What did Amon want? Equality for all (...) Zaheer believed in freedom. (Korra: I guess...) The problem was those guys were totally out of balance and they took their ideologies too far.
~ Toph explaining to Korra that even though what her enemies did was wrong, they still had understandable reasons.
All the people who make life miserable... who make life dangerous... what if we could change things?
~ Light to Mia.
I have never wanted to step in Archimedes's shoes. I am simply here to stop his megalomaniacal plan to take his kingdom to the stars!
~ Mesmeroth informing Trin of his supposed true motives.

Inconsistently Heinous villains who do bad things for noble causes. They are similar to Extremists, though they are generally easier to redeem and are highly sympathetic.

There are three types of anti-villains that can qualify for Inconsistently Heinous:

  • The Noble Anti-Villain: Anti-villains who are undeniably on the side of evil, but are prevented from being Near Pure Evil or Pure Evil due to having a code of honor, affability and standards against more despicable villains. Notable examples are Heihachi Mishima, Venom, Dracule Mihawk, Shego and Deathstroke.
  • The Woobie Anti-Villain: Anti-villains who are evil due to circumstances and/or a tragic past, making them extremely sympathetic and pitiable despite their evil deeds. Prominent examples are Mr. Freeze, Carrie White, Alma Wade, Monika and Sweeney Todd.
  • The Well-Intentioned Anti-Villain: Anti-villains who commit evil acts for noble goals. These anti-villains often believe that their ruthless methods are the only way to achieve their end goal. Great examples of this anti-villain include Magneto, Silco, Amon, Zaheer, and Takuto Maruki.

Note: Just because a villain finds redemption, is in the grey zone, has many redeeming qualities, a tragic past, sympathetic moments /insecurities or noble intentions doesn't automatically mean they're , were or will be an anti-villain if they don't meet the criteria above or are too ruthless with their methods to qualify as one (e.g. Koba, Ra's al Ghul, Thanos (2018), Shiroko Terror, Joker (2019), Chris McLean , Shredder (2012) , Trevor Phillips , Walter White, Charles Dreyfus, Mr .Frog , Dracula , El Macho, Mor'du , Tomura Shigaraki, and Azula.)
