William Sparks (better known as Calypso), is the main antagonist of the Twisted Metal franchise and a playable character in Twisted Metal 4. He is the creator of the Twisted Metal contest who grants any wish of the winner of each competition whilst punishing said winner using their own wish.
His Evil Ranking[]
Debated Validations[]
- He refuses to reward Cousin Eddy for murdering every other competitor in the tournament, not to mention he wasn't even officially part of the tournament since he wasn't invited to participate. The only reason he grants Eddy's wish anyway was because he was threatening him, and even then, he clearly resents having to do so,it’s unclear if he had standards or that he needs competitors to torture.
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- In each continuity, Calypso is in charge of hosting the twisted Metal Competition for the sake of causing mass destruction that always cause deaths of thousands (if not millions) of innocent people, with Small Brawl being the exception.
Classic Continuity[]
- Starting the twisted metal competition to cause destruction across Los Angeles.
- When Carl Roberts ordered Calypso to call off all future twisted metal competitions, Calypso responded by tricking him into driving his car into a portal leading to space.
- After his contest left Los Angeles in ruins, he opts to have the next twisted metal contest take place across the entire world instead, declaring a tournament with no safe zones to be more fun.
- When Jamie Roberts wished to be reunited with Carl, Calypso sent her into space as well so she can be with her brother there.
- When Ken Masters wished for the world to know his face, Calypso stretches it to the point where it covered the entire Earth.
- Granting Mr. Grimm's wish of having people die faster for the sake of satisfying the reaper's hunger for souls while expressing happiness when Grimm's hunger returned once the entire population is wiped out.
- When Captain Rogers asked to for a younger body, he instead gave him an extremely muscular body with his head withering away little by little.
- When Chuckie Floop wished for money, Calypso crushed him to death with a massive amount of money.
- While he did honor Miranda's wish of having Amanda brought back, it's made clear that he knew she was dead all along as demonstrated when he forcibly summoned Mr. Grimm to have Amanda's soul extracted from him, a process that appear to be quite painful.
- He used the argument between Carl and Jamie to his advantage by granting Carl's "wish" for Jamie to finally be quiet, through stealing Jamie's mouth.
- Reviving Simon Wittlebone as a baby when he wished to be reborn so that he can finish his building, thus rendering him unable to protect his building from being destroyed.
- When Catfish wished to hunt men, Calypso had him become the man he is hunting only to have the hunter become the hunted before killing Catfish and having his head mounted on a wall.
Black[]
- Slaughtering the guards at an asylum to recruit the people there for his competition.
- Capturing the sergeant who was responsible for trapping Mr. Grimm and his partner to allowed Grimm to eat the man.
- Shooting Roadkill dead immediately after restoring his lost memories.
- Binding the man responsible for trapping Dollface in her mask to force Dollface to choose between taking the key and saving herself at the cost of having to kill him or let him live while remaining bound to the mask presumably forever. Leading to Dollface killing the man and living with the mask instead.
- Destroying the remote responsible for controlling Charlie Kane in front of Charlie's son should the boy win his competition, planning to force the boy to serve as his successor in case Calypso himself passed away under the pretense of supposedly making things better for the boy.
Lost Endings[]
- Murdering Angela Fortin after she became the winner of the contest.
- Granting Scott Campbell's wish to be brought back to life only to shoots and kill him again.
- Capturing the kidnapper of Bruce Cochrane's girlfriend expecting Bruce to murder him in a fit of vengeful rage. When Bruce instead chose to spare him, Calypso killed the man anyway, calling Bruce's mercy "anticlimactic".
- He granted Charlie Kane's wish to be able to drive one more time due to nearing the end of his life by having him unknowingly ingest a potion to make him immortal and turn him into his personal driver for the sake of recruiting more drivers for his competition.
- Much like in the final product, he tricks Carl Roberts into entering a world without his competition, but said world is completely void of everything else as well, trapping the officer there.
- Once he showed the secret recording to Commander Mason, he attempted to persuade the commander into letting the information loose for the sake of causing more chaos for fun. When Mason refuses and told Calypso he isn't afraid of him, Calypso reveals he had his entire strike team slaughtered before banishing the now panicking commander from his chambers, not even giving the man his prize.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
Classic Continuity[]
- He has a genuine tragedy, as he was involved in an accident that claimed the lives of his wife and daughter.
- Many endings have him actually grant the winner's wish without screwing them over.
- He's far too comedic to be PE or NPE, as some ways he tricks people are played for laughs, such as his aforementioned stretching of Ken Masters' face to cover the planet, giving Mike & Stu first class tickets to allow them to fly, and him mishearing Gene Ruttish's wish to where he pretends to be attracted to him along with the women.
- He cares for his daughter Krista Sparks, as her endings in both 2 and Head-On are the most tragic ones from the original continuity. As in 2, she was revived by the government only to place a bomb inside her, and Calypso, despite being aware of it because of her telling him, hugs her and allows the bomb to kill him as well. While in Head-On, Calypso brings back her ghost to compete in hopes of her winning so she could be revived, expressing remorse when she wishes for the accident that killed her and mom to have never happened only for her to end up in a coma.
Black[]
- He has the least amount of proper characterization of all of the incarnations of Calypso, not even having any lines of dialogue.
- While the choices he has most of the contestants make are still pretty cruel, one of them had him giving Needles the blood of Preacher, telling him that he'd be freed from his curse if he drank it, but he would have to stop killing or it would return. While Needles instead chose to destroy the cure and kill Calypso, had he drank the potion, Calypso would've saved several lives.
- He told Charlie's son that, in time, things will be better and that he needs a successor to take over his contest when he dies, showing disgust that he used a dead body to drive is too far and reluctant to have him as his successor as he didn’t want the kid to get killed.
Lost Endings[]
- He has a notable sense of honor, as shown by him allowing his women go with the drivers of Hammerhead when they wished to do so or giving Agent Stone the secret information he was after.
- Like many of his other incarnations, he has several noteworthy comedic moments. For example, his desperate cries for mercy when Grimm arrives to claim him.
- While he did kill Angela Fortin, it can be argued that it was out of self-defense as she was the one who fired first. That said, he did tell her she should have kept her eye on her target with a smug look on his face before pulling the trigger of his gun. Not to mention the very concept of his contest is all about the needless murder of innocents, making this specifically a minor prevention.
- He was genuinely grateful for the woman Needles held hostage when she held the clown at gunpoint after the Needles starts shooting at Calypso for fun.
