Callisto Mal is a major character of Disney's 61st full-length animated feature film Strange World.
She is the president of Avalonia and helps lead the Clades into this new world.
She originally worked with the famous explorer Jaeger Clade, to try and find out what was on the other side of the mountains that isolated Avalonia. But she returned with Jaeger's son, Searcher, to Avalonia after he discovered some plants that they named Pando celery, which would go on to power everything in Avalonia until it was killed by the Venture Expedition after discovering that it was destroying their world.
She was voiced by Lucy Liu.
What makes her heinous?[]
- When Searcher and Ethan explicitly explain to her that Pando was not only a destructive parasite, but an entity that would outright “destroy Avalonia,” she dismisses their claims and continues her plans of preserving Pando, thus putting the lives of every being on Avalonia at stake in the process.
- To prevent the Clades from interfering with their goals, she has them imprisoned in her blimp.
What makes her inconsistent?[]
- She's an anti-villainous extremist who genuinely believes in the importance of Pando, for it is capable of providing renewable energy for civilians. Risking the lives of all beings in Avalonia does not subvert this, for she believed that the people of Avalonia wouldn’t be harmed by Pando’s influence even if Searcher and Ethan explicitly said otherwise.
- After finally realizing that Pando would endanger the lives of the people of Avalonia, she redeems herself and helps the Clades eliminate it.
